Courliss Having just opened my own private practice, I've found myself using this reference time and again to help with creating forms and taking high-quality clinical notes. As another reviewer mentioned, this is what we should be learning in grad school...and this should be the textbook! This is a very easy read, that is packed with practical information that you can use right away. In addition to guiding you through the process of writing progress notes and treatment plans, Dr. Sutton's text also includes an entire section of must-have forms for counselors in private practice. The online component of STEPNotes is equally simple, logical, practical, and time-saving. The software is easy to navigate with much of the information available at just the click of a button...literally! For both overwhelmed new practitioners and busy seasoned veterans, the program makes developing clinical-grade, highly professional treatment plans and progress notes an easy and straightforward process. I highly recommend Dr. Rhonda Sutton’s book as well as the accompanying online program to anyone in the counseling profession.

The STEPnotes system captures all the essential information from a session in an easy-to-use format that results in a complete, efficient progress note to help document a client’s journey. The inclusion of versions for career counseling and school counseling, along with the additional documentation examples and the clinical glossary, make this book an essential resource for counselors.

Warren, M.S., LPCA Dr. Sutton's guide to clinical language and documentation is a great investment for therapists at any level of experience, but a must-have for a new clinician. Being a new clinician myself, I initially struggled to create robust progress notes that captured the therapeutic process using strong clinical language. Using the case studies included in this book, I was able to better understand how to appropriately employ clinical language and document sessions in a way that is not only acceptable to my superiors in the field, but I daresay impressive. Once you've finished reading through it and have taken advantage of the practice opportunities inside, this book makes a nice a la carte menu of clinical terms and phrases that elevate progress notes and give them a truly professional quality. The Counselor's STEPs for Progress Notes are universal and make a great resource no matter your designation or practice setting. Highly recommended!
