Bowles’ collection reminds us how much fun it is to be scared By joseph e. casanova Award-winning author David Bowles’ latest anthology sparks fond memories of my relatives spinning yards of things that would go bump in the South Texas night. Legendary monstruos such as brujas and cucuys made us beg our parents to let us sleep with the lights on and check our bedroom closets before they turned in. Bowles’ collection reminds us how much fun it is to be scared.

I could not put it down once I started reading these stories that make all the legends and folktales come to life. They are so vividly narrated, like "The Ghosts of Fort Brown, "Chupacabras in Mission," "The Flying Witch of Monterrey," "The Witch Owl," "La Llorona by the Canal," and the wild "Curse of the Black Witch Moth." I was genuinely frightened in a cool way here (to "The Sack Man," get out of my head now!). I can't wait to share these stories with more people. I also liked the pages of notes at the end, recording initial reception of stories and contextualizing them, making this book essential to scholars of folklore and urban legends - as well as exciting to readers! Also good for read-alouds and scaring the heck out of yourself or friends.
