I appreciate that that Langley limited the points to a manageable number – five. I also appreciate his balanced approach to this issue which accommodates both moderators and abstainers and those who want to take an incremental approach vs. a full stop. Helpful points: (1) There are times when we already choose not to drink, so we are already have some success to build on in saying no. (2) Know how much you really drink, however you measure it, -- ounces, glasses, bottles, amount of money spent per week on alcohol. Only when you face that fact can you set up a plan. (3) Slow down. What Langley calls “pacing yourself’ means reducing how much you drink by drinking slower, starting later, and stopping sooner. (4) 11 ways to say “no” to a drink. (5) Make a plan and start with anything that is immediately dangerous about your drinking, like drinking and driving. Start with being safer. (6) “Will power is like a muscle that needs to be trained and developed slowly to make it stronger.” (7) Exercise. (8) Meditate for even 5 minutes/day. (9) Be gentle to yourself and set yourself up for success as much as possible. Make a plan that is realistic in terms of outcomes and time and define what success is. (10) “You can’t drink less unless you actually drink less.”

A Real Life Success Story, Not A Book Of Rules And Guidelines By Amazon Customer Finally, a book that tells the story of someone who was unhappy with their drinking, decided to do something about it, and successfully learned to make small changes incrementally until they were finally within a healthy drinking range. If you are considering giving up drinking because you've failed at efforts to moderate, either on your own or with the help of an organization, you need to read this book first. The author speaks about how even the first minor steps of moderation and the looming thought of a 30 day abstinence period recommended by moderation communities was too overwhelming for him. He describes the steps that he took week by week to decrease the harm he was doing with his drinking and to incrementally decrease his drinking until he was finally within healthy drinking limits. Only then, did the author feel ready to attempt the 30 days of abstinence, four months after this process started. The emphasis of the book is on building your willpower muscle with small successes, making a plan and then committing to that plan. As many of us know when the goal is too big and we fail it can be devastating to our confidence in trying again. The author urges the reader to start small, build small successes into larger ones working from a foundation of successes The author discusses the tools he used and the changes in lifestyle that he added to replace the amount of time that went into drinking. Again, small changes leading to big results. I can see myself using these same techniques in other areas of my life such as developing a healthy diet (maybe cut that ice cream from two scoops to one scoop a night-over a year, that's a lot less ice cream) and learning to deal with stress. The book is well written, brief and easy to read in one or two sittings. Well worth the time!If there had been a book like this available when I was trying to moderate, I would definitely have done some things differently. I don't know if I would have succeeded but I would have quit those repeated attempts at 30 day abstinence periods that I attempted and failed at on an almost monthly basis, instead I would have worked up to it.If you are someone who is trying to moderate your drinking before throwing in the towel and giving it up for good, this is a must read. It is a real life success story, instead of a book of rules and guidelines.

It's great to know that it is possible to moderate your alcohol intake - for many of us anyway. There are a whole lot of people who want to cut back and can do it without resorting to total abstinence. This book is written for them. These research based tips work for me and many others. And if you try the strategies in this book for moderating your alcohol intake and they don't work, then you'll know you probably should look at total abstinence.
