National Geographic Book of Nature Poetry: More than 200 Poems With Photographs That Float, Zoom, and Bloom!, by J. Patrick Lewis

From School Library Journal K-Gr 4—Compiled by former U.S. Children's Poet Laureate Lewis, this assortment of nature-themed verse is, in a word, breathtaking. The selections represent a variety of styles, time periods, countries of origin, lengths, and themes; all are set against a stunning backdrop of full-bleed photographs. Offerings are divided into sections such as "In the sky," "In the Sea," and "On the Move" and run the gamut from whimsical to informative to comical and back again. William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," Li Po's "You Ask Why," and Jack Prelutsky's "The Ways of Living Things" provide myriad entry points into exploring and celebrating the natural world. Photographs, of the superior caliber one might expect from National Geographic, are labeled with a description of the animal, plant, or location depicted. At book's end, budding poets (and their teachers) will find a list of recommended children's materials on wordplay in poetry, sorted by type (acrostics, palindromes, haiku, and more). An index, divided by poem, subject, poem first line, and poet, renders this work exceedingly useful. VERDICT An excellent addition to any poetry collection.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

Okay, I may be a little biased because I have a poem in it, but then, I loved the first volume (about animals) and I didn't have a poem in that one. Whoever thought of pairing photos from the National Geographic archives with poetry for children is a genius. And then to pick J. Patrick Lewis to edit it! (He's the former Children's Poet Laureate of the United States.) The other thing I like about the collection is that it has more than 200 poems. Poetry collections for kids sometimes have only 14 or so poems, but this is a big book and a veritable feast. When I got my copy I sat down in my reading corner with a happy sigh, ready for a nice long stretch of good stuff. Plus it has poems in it by some of my favorite poetry people on cool topics like sailing stones and brinicles (I'm looking at you, Laura Salas!). The only thing left to say is ENJOY!

Invites readers to engage in the creative processes of reading and writing poetry By Janet Hamilton Summary: Over 200 poems are paired with nature photographs, arranged in sections about animals, seasons, specific places, natural disasters. J. Patrick Lewis, former U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate, edited the collection, and wrote an introduction about looking at nature and responding to it poetically. He includes six of his own poems in post-it note form at the end, and an essay on “Who is Mother Nature?” that invites kids to write their own poetic answer to that question. Also included at the end: a bibliography of children’s books on wordplay in poetry arrange by category (acrostics, anagrams, epitaphs, etc.), and indices by title, poet, first line, and subject. 192 pages; grades K-6.Pros: This is a rich collection of poetry by many different writers that invites children to engage in the creative processes of enjoying poetry and creating their own. Readers will be drawn in by the beautiful, National Geographic quality photographs on every page.Cons: It would have been interesting to know a little more about some of the lesser-known poets; at the very least, the year they wrote their poems.
