About the Author Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught child and human development to both undergraduate and graduate students for more than three decades. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master's and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago. She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia. Berk has published widely on the effects of school environments on children's development, the development of private speech, and most recently, the role of makebelieve play in development. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Education and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It has appeared in many prominent journals, including "Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Development and Psychopathology, "and "Early Childhood Research Quarterly. "Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to "Psychology Today "and "Scientific American." Berk has served as research editor for "Young Children "and consulting editor for "Early Childhood Research Quarterly "and the "Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. "She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes on early childhood development, having recently authored chapters on the importance of parenting, on make-believe play and self-regulation, and on the kindergarten child. She has also written the chapter on development for "The Many Faces ofPsychological Research in the Twenty-First Century "(Society for the Teaching of Psychology), the chapter on social development for "The Chicago Companion to the Child, "the article on Vygotsky for the "Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science, "and the chapter on storytelling as a teaching strategy for "Voices of Experience: Memorable Talks from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology "(Association for Psychological Science). Berk's books include "Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation, Scaffolding Children's Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education, "and "Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings. "In addition to "Infants, Children, and Adolescents, "she is author of the best-selling texts "Child Development "and "Development Through the Lifespan, "published by Allyn and Bacon. Her book for parents and teachers is "Awakening Children's Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference." "" Berk is active in work for children's causes. In addition to service in her home community, she is a member of the national board of directors of Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization that provides early literacy intervention to thousands of low-income preschoolers across the United States, using college and university students as interveners. Living a healthy lifestyle is PRICELESS! This book is short sweet and full of useful information, that if you use should help you reach your weight loss goals.I have been a nutritionally oriented nurse for 17 years, so I know about health challenges and more importantly how to avoid health challenges. I knew walking was a form of exercise but this book reminded me of the additional benefits of walking.This book is a complete guide to weight loss; you will learn about the physical, mental, emotional and dietary aspects of getting results that last! This is not a book about dieting, rather a book about living a healthier lifestyle. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks to live a healthier lifestyle.

By Claudia Some people feel the need to always be in the gym heavy lifting and doing all of these crazy work out routines. I believe that not everyone is capable of doing a lot of heavy lifting and exercising so the fact that simply walking is a work out goes to show how fascinating the human body is. I think that as long as you try and you keep your body in motion everything is fine. I'm glad there's a book out there for people like me that like to relax while working out and still keeping the body right!

Carbone Modern Training and Physiology provides a good, concise introduction to training methods with a scientific underpinning. It covers important topics like VO2 max, aerobic thresholds, anaerobic training, and running efficiency as part of a workout program. The author's suggestions are rooted in up-to-date science. The book is geared towards middle and long distance runners, however long distance means 10,000 meters rather than 100 mile ultra marathons. It's also a work most useful to experienced runners, for example, the pacing charts in the appendix require being able to run a 5k in less than 23 minutes. Nonetheless, there's great information in this work for runners of all abilities. It's a quick read, getting to the knowledge that runners want to know. It's well worth the few dollars investment to get on the right track with the proper training methods outlined in this book.

It's not really a training guide for the average person. If you really want to know the nuts and bolts of how training changes your body, and how you actually become faster, then this is an interesting read.

It breaks the physiology of running down into understandable components, so training can be properly applied. So many coaches create training regimes without fully understanding why they're having runners do any specific type of training. While there is certainly a place for running books written at a more detailed and technical level, there is perhaps a greater need for those that can convey, in layman's terms, what happens within the body before, during and after training.It gives covers the stages of training, such as base distance building, tempo runs, interval training through explanations of the various energy systems utilized by the body. When runners and coaches are able to grasp these things, training takes on a whole new meaning. This should be a must in the library of any new or experienced coach.

I have already been on a weight loss program and doing well; but this will help with the big picture and will help me keep my eyes on the goal for long term success. What an easy way to make exercise a permanent part of my life. Support, workouts, fitness tips, all great motivators that will help move me toward my fitness goals. I so enjoyed Jamie Murray's, encouragement, support, and strength to help me reach my ideal weight - and then be able to maintain it for life. Her seven motivational tips are inspirational and enlivening that I am sure they will give me that little kick I need to keep on the right track. Some benefits I am sure I will also gain include an increased in my self esteem, the confidence that I can succeed, strategies to stay motivated when I find myself losing focus and enhanced energy to do all the things I need to do. This is certainly a great guide to point me in the right direction to not only lose weight, but also improve my self-esteem. This book is a blessing! Inspirational, motivational, supportive, and beautifully insightful. I loved reading this book. It is a book that anyone can read over and over again.

This is something I have been preaching for the last year and half or two years. As one that has been struggling with their weight for sometime now, I have been able to motivate myself to get up and get out and get going. I loved reading this book because it gave me just that much more motivation to continue doing just what I been doing for the last two years. At the local gym that I am a member of I do all kind of activity that makes you get up and go, The books speaks of some of the activities I take part of. Spinning and zumba being one of them. This book also speaks of 7 tips one can ad to there day to day exercise to make things a little easy for you. Great tips for eating and many other areas to help keep you Getting up, getting out and get going. Great book.

The 7 motivators that the author has shared are like no other I have read before, very eye opening and really got me to thinking about my own motivation to lose weight and the things that I need to change or to add. I like that the author talked about rewarding yourself and how she rewarded herself every five pounds lost. I think this is so important in anyone’s weight loss journey. The tips and the strategies and the recipes the author has included are most helpful. This is a keeper for me, when I am lacking motivation, I will definitely be pulling this book back out.

When I can't the oldest, Sheldon, reads it to his sisters Barbara and Roslyn. Sweet dreams girls! It is a delightful heartfelt story for children (and adults) that is cleverly written. I would buy any future books by Ms. Wentworth. She replaced Dr. Seuss in our house!

The Story of truly a magical bear By Mona Piontkowski The Christmas Bear is a charming and delightful story of a magical bear and how he affects so many lives. I smiled and also shed a tear as I followed this little fellow on his adventures. This is not just a sweet story about a teddy bear but one that addresses bullying, homelessness and loneliness - it's a wonderful lesson for all ages.

The story and action are paced with smart humor and topical themes.I bought it through Comixology and read it online but just bought the TPB because the artwork is so good I want to own the printed version.I highly recommend reading this different, fun comic book.
