The imagery and the characters keeps the reader engaged throughout the entire story. It stimulates the child's own imagination and totally immerses them in the story. There are a lot of cookbooks, but not many like this. A Dance in the Kichen is a celebration of fusion cooking; a blend of world flavors and philosophy, doled out by a joyous chef. He focuses on balancing flavors, textures, aroma, appearance and nutrition to delight those who are eating and thus promote good digestion which in turn contributes considerably to good health.. There are chapters on technique, sauces, the history of food, the politics of food, as well as presentation. Most of these recipes are relatively easy and were tested and eaten by ordinary people. The author almost always had a young assistant and they and others ate the finished products, and commented upon them. All the cooking was done in a galley kitchen with only a few feet of counter space. If it can be done there, it can be done anywhere. Author, Robert Dove McClellan, believes in combining the best of all cultures and commonalities. Through experimentation and many years as a chef, he offers up his blend of cultures, tastes and joys. Born in Philadelphia in 1940, he is a cook, a singer, a poet, a social change activist, an advocate for seniors and persons with disabilities, and a religious historian. He has spent a significant amount of his life working for justice and peace.

Overeating and obesity are on the rise. Despite public health warnings, availability of diet books and programs, and the stigma associated with obesity, many people find it difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. While there are many books on the topic of caloric or need-based eating, obesity and overeating can also result from eating that is not driven by hunger. Recent research found that excess food intake is largely driven by the palatability of food and the pleasure derived from eating. Hedonic Eating: How the Pleasure of Food Affects Our Brains and Behavior discusses the pleasurable aspects of food intake that may cause and perpetuate overconsumption. Broad in its scope, this book examines the various behavioral, biological, and social rewards of food. The comprehensive chapters cover topics ranging from the neurochemistry of food reward to the hotly debated concept of 'food addiction,' while providing relevant and up-to-date information from the current body of scientific literature regarding food reward.

Once upon a time, so long ago that I have quite forgotten the date, there lived a king and queen who had no children. And the king said to himself, "All the queens of my acquaintance have children, some three, some seven, and some as many as twelve; and my queen has not one. I feel ill-used." So he made up his mind to be cross with his wife about it. But she bore it all like a good patient queen as she was. Then the king grew very cross indeed. But the queen pretended to take it all as a joke, and a very good one too.

The Light Princess, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review The fact that George MacDonald--a scholar as well as a preacher and writer--once read this fairy tale to his students instead of giving them a lecture says volumes about the man and his beliefs. It also says much about his faith in the power of stories. The Light Princess is a simple enough tale, clearly written for children--a princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness (she floats blissfully about the castle all day long, and gets into all sorts of adventures, as one can easily imagine)--yet it holds a powerful spiritual truth. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering--all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without body? What is love without falling? She discovers this truth, of course, only at the last minute when a faithful prince loves her enough to die for her.

Sometimes it's not a ponderous lecture--or sermon--that we need in order to experience what incarnation is about. --Doug Thorpe.

From Publishers Weekly McKinley's deft adaptation trims the story without sacrificing the witty vitality of MacDonald's 19th century original. The story of a bewitched princess (gravity does not affect her) and the prince who will sacrifice his life for her is presented in a lavishly illustrated package. Treherne's intensely decorative drawings add a striking visual dimension: her use of rich colors and elegantly stylized figures creates a romantic, mysterious mood. Each picture is bordered by a motif that emphasizes an element of the story, which effectively enhances both text and pictures. All ages. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4The long-awaited princess, a newborn only child, is cursed at her christening by an uninvited disgruntled outrageous guest. The curse: lightness of body and spirit. The princess is given to uncontrollable floating and merri ment. The cure is love, which makes her cry and brings her down to earth. McKinley has cut approximately two thirds of MacDonald's 19th-Century fairy tale, keeping the spirit, grace, and wit of the original. She also keeps the king's inane Chinese philosophers, Hum-Drum and Kopy-Keck, MacDon ald's tasteless but harmless creations whose worst fault is that theirs is the section of the story that children skip over and forgetthey are truly, deeply boring; mercifully, here they are cut to a minimum. Treherne's buoyant, styl ized, full-page, full-color watercolors are reminiscent of Errol LeCain's. In tricate borders pick up a minor pattern in each picture and frame it with stun ning effect. Nothing much has been done with this classic since Maurice Sendak (Farrar, 1969) illustrated it with wonderful tongue-in-cheek formality. This new edition brings a younger gen eration a charming combination of tal ent.Helen Gregory, Grosse Pointe Public Library, Mich.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Still, this edition is not quite what I remember.1) This edition does not feature illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Instead, it features a few (about 4) colored etching-type illustrations by Arthur Hughes.2) The cover page says "unabridged". As I do not have the one I read as a child, I cannot say this is false, but I remember it to be a full-size novel. This edition is about the size of a pocket calculator: 3"X4.5". The font size is about a 10. Yet, each chapter is only a few pages long and the total page count is 131.This edition claims to be unabridged from MacDonald's 1867 edition of the story included in a collection of fairy tales. As fairly tale collections are frequently abridged stories, I wonder if this edition is claiming to be unabridged from an edition that itself was shortened.I purchased this copy cheap, knowing there must be a reason for it. Therefore, I was not disappointed. Still, I have now also purchased the edition with Sendak as illustrator. For a pocket book, I find this to be very nice. Still, if you are unfamiliar with the story, I would recommend a different edition.

Witty and sweet, this book was as appealing to me as an adult as it would be to any juvenile consumers with a glimmer of pixie dust in their eyes. Any child who loves C.S. Lewis's classic Chronicles of Narnia will delight in the author who fascinated and influenced Lewis in his own writing. MacDonald never writes to condescend, and thus he entertains all who read. The humor and twists in the story excite and enrapture, while the force of honest spirituality give it a lasting impetus and impact. The Light Princess is truly a nugget from the Golden age of children's literature.

Very Original, and some Darn Good Writing By Darien Summers The Light Princess has every element that a good fairy tale should have: tragedy, love, good, evil, magic, charm and a happy ending. I'm sure there's more. The book does seem to be a bit more geared towards girls than boys since the premise of the book seems to be more or less that love conquers all, and the book lacks the bravado that boys seem to enjoy. Nonetheless, the book is well written, original in my opinion and well worth the effort to read even if you're an adult. The book is about a princess who has a curse placed on her at birth; a curse that renders her weightless and hence, not prone to the laws of gravity. Another side effect of this curse is her tendency to laugh towards anything, no matter how serious or unfunny the circumstance may be. And so, the curse goes on into adulthood with the princess pleasantly adapting to her circumstances, and her parents not so pleasantly adapting to her circumstances as they do learn to cope, but try everything to break the curse. Along her journeys, the princess meets a prince who falls deeply in love with her. I won't say how, but his love of her, and then, her love of him ends up breaking the princess' curse. The prince also ends up being the remedy to the princess' incessant laughing. The ending is very typical of fairy tales, but the road to it is very uniquely carved out and deserving of praise. I hope you give this book a try.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

National Geographic Book of Nature Poetry: More than 200 Poems With Photographs That Float, Zoom, and Bloom!, by J. Patrick Lewis

From School Library Journal K-Gr 4—Compiled by former U.S. Children's Poet Laureate Lewis, this assortment of nature-themed verse is, in a word, breathtaking. The selections represent a variety of styles, time periods, countries of origin, lengths, and themes; all are set against a stunning backdrop of full-bleed photographs. Offerings are divided into sections such as "In the sky," "In the Sea," and "On the Move" and run the gamut from whimsical to informative to comical and back again. William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," Li Po's "You Ask Why," and Jack Prelutsky's "The Ways of Living Things" provide myriad entry points into exploring and celebrating the natural world. Photographs, of the superior caliber one might expect from National Geographic, are labeled with a description of the animal, plant, or location depicted. At book's end, budding poets (and their teachers) will find a list of recommended children's materials on wordplay in poetry, sorted by type (acrostics, palindromes, haiku, and more). An index, divided by poem, subject, poem first line, and poet, renders this work exceedingly useful. VERDICT An excellent addition to any poetry collection.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

Review "Few books make it clearer why nature inspires so many poets to reach for the pen." -- Starred Review, Publishers Weekly“An inherently fascinating and fun read from first page to last, and colorfully illustrated throughout, the 'National Geographic Book of Nature Poetry...' is certain to be an enduringly popular addition to family, school, and community library collections.” — Midwest Book Review "Nature in all of its colorful, vivid, stunning glory is presented here in full-page, beautifully reproduced color photographs (National Geographic’s specialty, naturally) and spot-on accompanying poems…. This is a full package; a duet of wonder. A beautifully produced collection that will easily snag the attention of young readers.” — Booklist.

Okay, I may be a little biased because I have a poem in it, but then, I loved the first volume (about animals) and I didn't have a poem in that one. Whoever thought of pairing photos from the National Geographic archives with poetry for children is a genius. And then to pick J. Patrick Lewis to edit it! (He's the former Children's Poet Laureate of the United States.) The other thing I like about the collection is that it has more than 200 poems. Poetry collections for kids sometimes have only 14 or so poems, but this is a big book and a veritable feast. When I got my copy I sat down in my reading corner with a happy sigh, ready for a nice long stretch of good stuff. Plus it has poems in it by some of my favorite poetry people on cool topics like sailing stones and brinicles (I'm looking at you, Laura Salas!). The only thing left to say is ENJOY!

Invites readers to engage in the creative processes of reading and writing poetry By Janet Hamilton Summary: Over 200 poems are paired with nature photographs, arranged in sections about animals, seasons, specific places, natural disasters. J. Patrick Lewis, former U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate, edited the collection, and wrote an introduction about looking at nature and responding to it poetically. He includes six of his own poems in post-it note form at the end, and an essay on “Who is Mother Nature?” that invites kids to write their own poetic answer to that question. Also included at the end: a bibliography of children’s books on wordplay in poetry arrange by category (acrostics, anagrams, epitaphs, etc.), and indices by title, poet, first line, and subject. 192 pages; grades K-6.Pros: This is a rich collection of poetry by many different writers that invites children to engage in the creative processes of enjoying poetry and creating their own. Readers will be drawn in by the beautiful, National Geographic quality photographs on every page.Cons: It would have been interesting to know a little more about some of the lesser-known poets; at the very least, the year they wrote their poems.

Review "This book could change your life!" Rachael Hertogs, compiling editor of Thirteen Moons and author Menarche: A Journey to Womanhood "Lucy, your book, Moon Time, is monumental. I cannot tell you how long I have thought of the very things you are putting forward and to see this in print is thrilling. Your book joins the momentum of changing the paradigms and shifting what will come." ALisa Starkweather, founder of Red Tent Temple Movement"A beautiful and inspiring book full of practical information and ideas." Miranda Gray, author of Red Moon and The Optimized Woman"Lucy Pearce weaves a moon-web that draws in the many other women who have written on the subject of menstrual cycles and places herself as one, amongst others. Her open and accessible book offers practical encouragement about how we can tune into our own cycles and dance with them in the most creative and healthy way. Lucy reminds us of the things we seem to have forgotten about. She is one of the special whisperers, who helps us to remember our own power and sacredness as played out in our cycles. Her writing empowers her readers to have a voice to respond. This is a remarkable gift to us." Tracy Evans, PhD researcher on women s rites of passage, Wales

It's perfect for me. I was not taught the Truth about my Moon Time, and I only now have taken action to learn about this super important part of being a woman! What prompted my action was that last month, I decided to stop taking birth control after about 20 years of taking it regularly!!! I have been chemically altering my body with The Pill and I feel remorse. This sweet book has awakened my curiosity and natural sweetness that is my birthright. One thing I learned from this book is the importance of being celebrated by her mother and family when a young lady gets her first period! I never had that-- and I was able to ask my mother for that life-affirming celebration NOW. When I called her on the phone and asked her to celebrate my "first" period, my mom had tears and he said she had never thought of that and she said of course she would. My package is in the mail and on it's way. I don't know what it's going to be, but I asked for a card and something cute with red and pink colors.I feel a healing and an awakening has already taken place. I look forward to my natural Moon Time from now on and learning the insightful gifts that it brings because Life is just that--- a gift!

An empowering resource for self-care and self-understanding By Molly My first reading of the book Moon Time in 2012 had a profound impact on my personal understanding of the natural ebb and flow of my energy in connection to my body's cyclical nature.Moon Time is written in a friendly, conversational tone and is a quick read with a lot of insight into the texture and tone of our relationships with menstruation. The book contains information about charting cycles and about our relationship to our bodies and our fertility. I especially enjoyed the excellent section on minimizing PMS through self-care measures and how to plan time to nurture and nourish yourself during your monthly moon time. I also appreciate the section on motherhood and menstruation.Moon Time also includes planning information for Red Tents and Moon Lodges and for menarche rituals as well as for personal ceremonies and self-care rituals at home. It ends with an absolutely phenomenal list of resources—suggested reading and websites.Towards the beginning of the book Lucy observes, “We live in a culture which demands that we are ‘turned on’ all the time. Always bright and happy. Always available for intercourse–both sexual and otherwise with people. Psychologist Peter Suedfeld observes that we are all ‘chronically stimulated, socially and physically and we are probably operating at a stimulation level higher than that for which our species evolved.’ It is up to us to value rest and fallow time. We must demand it for ourselves to ensure our health." She also comments on something I’ve observed in my own life and have previously discussed with my friends, in that the frustration and anger and discontent we may feel pre-menstrually or during menstruation is actually our body's way of expressing things we have been feeling for a long time, but trying to stifle (rather than hormonal "irrationality): "There is no shame in tears. There is a need for anger. Blood will flow. Speak your truth. Follow your intuition. Nurture your body. But above all ... Let yourself rest."One of the things that Moon Time helped clarify for me is that my moontime is worthy of careful attention to my physical and emotional well-being, just as careful attention is important during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I've been a devoted proponent for years of good care of yourself during these phases of life, but had not applied the same rationale or expectation for myself during moontime. This monthly experience of being female is an experience worth respecting and is a sacred opportunity to treat my body and my emotions with loving care and self-renewal. I changed the way I treat myself after reading this book! Sound like too much to expect from your life, schedule, and family? Moon Time includes a great reminder with regard to creating retreat space, taking time out for self-care, and creating ritual each month: “Do what you can with what you have, where you are.” You don’t have create something extensive or elaborate or wait for the “perfect time,” but you can still do something with what you have and where you are. (This is a good reminder for many things in life, actually.)I highly recommend Moon Time as an empowering resource for cycling women! It would also be a great resource for girls who are approaching menarche or for mothers seeking ways to honor their daughters’ entrance into the cycles of a woman’s life.—Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book.

Lucy has done a fine job updating and adding to the information in this power packed book of menstrual wisdom. As a nursing student, I observed my 1st birth when I was 19 years old. I was totally captivated (and still am) by the miracle and magic a woman's body is capable of. As a maternity nurse and wise woman healer, I easily walked into the beauty of women's bodies cycling with the moon. That natural information was the missing link in all the holistic education and healing I do with women. Thanks you Lucy for writing this book (and for writing Reaching for the Moon) as I recommend both books over and over to females wanting to become more consciously connected to their body's rhythm and the gift of their menstrual cycle. This book IS a life changing read for females.
