The Sapphire Chronicles took shape in his mind and manifested themselves into the first book in the series, “Quest for the Red Sapphire.” Released in 2013, it immediately caught the attention of readers. The following year, “The Sapphire Crucible” was published feeding the appetite of the growing number of fans of the series. “Crucible” answered many questions and raised even more. While in The Sapphire Chronicles have some of the classic influences (how can they not?) these are wholly original novels.In the third book (I do recommend you get books one and two before you read this, but it's not necessary: they have great recaps), we get reunited with familiar characters who really do feel like old friends.That's what I love most about this book: you know the characters. They are real; they are there. It's a book where you can hear their voices in your head and even see their expressions.Gates took what could have been ordinary, and made it extraordinary. It's an adventure the likes of which you haven't been taken on since the first time you picked up Lord of the Rings. Forget George RR Martin. Rival Gates is the man you need to be reading if you love fantasy!

By the Reading Head Although I haven’t read the first 2 books in the Sapphire Chronicles, Mandrean Revenge was not difficult to pick up. I found it very easy to pick up the thread of the story and understand the characters, specifically Linvin.This book is filled with excitement, suspense and intrigue from the first page, and is well enough written for me to be able to imagine the scenery and the feelings of the characters. I loved the relationship between the Necromancer and Linvin’s uncle especially and that between the Necromancer and Lord Mandrean made me laugh on more than one occasion.The characters are very well presented throughout, especially those new to the series, who are well described and very believable.Overall a great book for anyone. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Easy to read, great plot, old friends. By Fieldcene Even if you don't recognize the characters, you'll get a kick out of getting to know them. The forthright Linvin and his wily uncle, Anvar, match wits against an evil ruler and his not-so-tame wizard. But things never go to plan as you'll find out when the plot unfolds. The easy to read novel will sweep you away on a fantasy adventure.
