Gallehr Zane Del Chambers has presented the experience of deployment and return in a thoughtful and readable manner. Though I have no experience in the military, Zane Del Chamber’s book exposes the rawness and loneliness of America’s recent military campaigns. “The Lonely Road Home” employs a wide spectrum of literary and cultural references that help translate the soldier’s experience into some semblance of understanding for civilians. I enjoyed the references from ancient religious texts to popular music and television shows.Pg 202. Like Odysseus in Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the story of a man’s years-long struggle to return home from war, many of these veterans may still have had some of the battlefield within them years after the end of their service. The HBO documentary Wartorn (2011) opens with a quote from The Odyssey that captures this struggle of the veteran to return home: “Must you carry the bloody horror of combat in your heart forever?”The Lonely Road Home is not a book of military battle or political battles but rather the internal battles of one man’s spirit and intellect against the turbulent tide of emotional and existential crisis. I hope the author considers a follow up work years down the road. I suspect there is even more for us to understand as soldiers “…carry the bloody horror” over the years.
