From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—In this second series installment, Kaznim, a child of the singing sands, just wants her tortoise back. She knows that awful Egg Boy, who is watching the Orm egg for dastardly Oraton-Marr, has something to do with Ptolemy's disappearance. When she finally finds Ptolemy in the pit, she knows it is dangerous, but can't help herself from trying to rescue her beloved pet. She tumbles down and would have drowned in the sand had four hands not pulled her out of the sand fall. This chance encounter with Marwick and Sam brings Kaznim into Tod's world of the pathways and the Wizard Tower. Both girls want the same thing—for the Orm egg to hatch safely, but they want it for reasons as different as night and day. Can Kaznim and Tod trust each other? Told in 12 parts in short chapters, this adventurous romp will have readers turning the pages quickly. Zug's signature illustrations give the characters and settings life and add zest to the story. Tod is growing into her role as Apprentice, and Sage is giving her a depth that is fitting a life torn between loyalties. VERDICT A solid series entry for fans of the first book.—Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City

From the Back Cover

It's been two months since Alice TodHunter Moon—who insists on being called Tod—left her home in the seaside PathFinder village to pursue a life of Magyk in the Castle. Being Apprentice to ExtraOrdinary Wizard Septimus Heap is tricky, though—there's loads of new Magyk to learn, and she dearly misses her friends Oskar and Ferdie. But at least she's mastered the UnSeen Charm.

She's lucky she has, too—that UnSeen will come in handy when she sets out with Oskar and Ferdie on a perilous journey to retrieve the Egg of the Orm from the Desert of the Singing Sands. If they don't reach the Egg before it hatches, the new baby Orm could imprint on the evil sorcerer Oraton-Marr, giving him unlimited Magyk to do with what he wishes. . . .

Bursting with humorous and poignant moments, SandRider celebrates the satisfaction of taking charge of one's path in life—unexpected adventures and all.

It's always refreshing to see really well written, truly interesting female characters.I don't care who it's written for, these books are enjoyable at any age. The writing is polished, hilarious, and clever. Sage's plot lines are simple, but they play out in a very deep and complex world that sucks you in from start to finish. Additionally all her characters are relatable (if not necessarily likeable), for which I would give bonus points if I could.

When I heard the sequeal came out I was so excited and I loved the first book but i think this one isn't as good as the others because there wasn't as much action, but I still gave it 5 stars cause it was AWESOME!!! I hope she makes 7 books in this sereis too! Great job, keep up the good work.

Tod is finding her footing in her new world. She struggles with doing what she can. Sometimes her choices are not wise but she does not give up. I loved Spit Fire but wished he was a bigger part of the story. I was surprised that her Dad was not in the book. And her Aunt. She is up to no good. It was an entertaining story. I will not give anything away but just let me say this. If you want a good book this is the one for you. I have already preordered the final one. Can't wait until it comes out. To all those who read this I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. See you at the castle.
