Thank You and Good Night, by Patrick McDonnell

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Clement, a rabbit, is having his first sleepover. Jean (an elephant) and Alan Alexander (a bear) arrive appropriately dressed in pajamas, ready to take part in the fun. The friends spend their evening in innocent pursuits, such as happily performing the chicken dance, playing hide-and-seek, and jumping on the bed. Maggie, the young girl who shares Clement's home, serves each animal an appropriate snack—a carrot, peanuts, and honey—before the three get ready to settle down for the night. Charm and humor share the spotlight in equal measure: Alan Alexander loses his pajama bottoms while jumping on the bed; a sleepy bunny hopefully asks several times, "Now is it time for bed?"; and the three make comical expressions during a "funny face" contest. Maggie reads them bedtime stories, then asks what they are grateful for and a sweet, heartfelt poem follows. McDonnell pays homage to children's literature classics, providing plenty of nods: a red balloon, a bear and a honey pot, and a rabbit in blue-and-white pajamas. VERDICT This delightful bedtime story extols the virtues of friendship and of gratitude for simple pleasures.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

I love the sweet story about a sleepover with three friends, I love the subtle humor found in the simply elegant illustrations, and I love the nod to famous classic bedtime stories. The thing that these classic bedtime stories have in common are quotable snippets that bring the story from one generation to the next. For this book it is the heartwarming tradition found towards the end as the friends are being put to bed. Before they fall asleep, they are asked to name the things they are thankful for and the result is a poem listing all the little moments throughout the day and ending with, "A long, long list of that and this, ending with a good-night kiss. Kiss kiss kiss". For me, I just know this will be the line we will take from it and add to our bedtime routine.Highly recommended especially as a bedtime story! This has all the right elements to be a new classic for sure.

I guess I thought so because 'Mark' had an excellent way of painting a scene with descriptions of clothing By wonderhead Wow, Mark, when you read on a kindle a person does not see the authors name very often. I had assumed that the author was a woman. I guess I thought so because 'Mark' had an excellent way of painting a scene with descriptions of clothing. At first, I was bored by it, but then I bought it, and it became easy to picture the scene via clothing. And, hair color and hair style. Facial and physical descriptions became part of the background. I admire his artistic writing method. But I had a hard time grasping his reality. Shadow, Faery, and Us. Or, Shadow/Faery and Us. The plot takes the heroine from us to Faery where magic is real. Mark gets it right when he shows that in a world of magic, the nature of the world would be war, as Shadow battles Faery. Magic invalidates physical laws, so the environment is whatever kind of magic any author imagines.Mark seemed to imagine magic as a genetic characteristic which was optimized by adopting a certain magic abilities. Reality was created by making inanimate things magic so that there could be places. These places were an alternate earth. The characters could cross over to any of the three worlds but mostly shadow attacked Faery and they left us alone. The only aspect of reality which was consistent in all three worlds was time, I mean, you have to have a plot.Well, when anything you can imagine comes true, kind of like writing a novel, Mark went Middle Ages on us. War. I would have been more interested in how Mark imagined a magic based economy, or maybe family life, and then answer the question of how you die in a magic world. For that matter, how you are born. When you can rearrange molecules, like a star going nova, with just a thought, is there any crucible left for a plot? Give us readers a mechanism, imagine something, as to how you think magic would work in a magical world.

Review: The Dream Crystal (The Dream War Series, #1) by Mark O'Bannon By Amazon Customer In this novel we meet Aisling, who finds out, after a series of events that she is a faerie changeling.Along with this comes the knowledge that she has a 'sister', well the girl she was exchanged with, and she decided to find her but soon learns that she has been taken by the Shadow People.I think that is secondary plot, though I am still not positive. As the name we also have the plot about the actual Dream Crystal about which the book is named. We get three worlds in this novel-- the human world I guess, the shadow world and the land of dreams, which is where all the fairies live.We meet a lot of interesting people from all three among them are, Genevieve a human and Aisling's best friend. Eileen, a faerie. Ith, the shadow king. One of the reasons this novel only gets three stars was because of several little things that bothered me. It was nothing that affected the story as a whole but did cause a slow pace at times.Example: There were many character in the book and while some such as Aisling, Erin and Elaine was easy to remember we get a lot of other characters, mostly male now that I think back on it, that I couldn't really keep straight.Above is a very vague premiss of what this book is about I would try to give a more in-depth one but just do not think it is possible without giving everything away. When it came down to it I find I could not love Aisling, like her yes, but not love her. She just seemed slightly artificial to me and kind of a tease if you will. Also, I never felt a very strong connection with her, which is strange as the novel is only her POV.Altogether I really did like the novel and think it is a good first book and look forward to see more in the series.I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in a novel about fairies or a slightly long fantasy.*I received an Ebook copy of this book for free to review from the author.

Good Fantasy Novel; The Dream Crystal By S.Leighanne ** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review **I enjoyed reading The Dream Crystal. I like fantasy, and its not something that I have read a whole lot of, but I did enjoy reading this. Mark does a fantastic job of transporting you into the world of the fairies. There are 3 actual worlds, the dream world, the shadow world, and the human world and they mirror each other geographically, since they're more like alternate dimensions. There were a lot of characters, and sometimes they got a little bit confusing, and some of the names are a little hard to pronounce, but luckily, there is a handy dandy appendix in the back with the cast of characters and how to pronounce the troubling names. I also struggled with whether I liked some of the characters, my biggest struggle being Aisling. She's very proud and passionate, and she seems very into herself and her looks at certain points, which made me unsure of whether I really liked her. But as the story went on, she grew on me. Also, because Aisling wants to become a fashion designer, there is a lot of attention to detail about what the characters are wearing. In most of the scenes there was a description of the characters and everything that they were wearing.I also liked the emphasis put on the Celtic history and the occurrence of Gaelic phrases throughout the book. My family being Irish, I could really appreciate this and I thought that it really added to the novel. However, I did feel at times that the story dragged because of all of the detail that was put in and it just didn't feel like it was important to the story line at times. At times there was also an overwhelming amount of things happening in each chapter, so sometimes I had to backtrack to make sure that I understood what was going on. Also, as previously stated, the vast cast of characters also created some confusion.Overall, it was a good story, with a good plot, good characters. The writing was solid, but a little less attention to detail might do well in the future. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, especially if you like faeries. I give this novel a solid 3.5 out of 5!

By OutlawPoet The resident seven-year-old is at the point where she's really getting the joy of reading, so I'm always on the lookout for something that's both funny and adventurous to spur that enjoyment. This book is it!The book arrived yesterday and was waiting when my daughter got home from school. Normally, when she's just home from school, it's play time. Yesterday was different. She picked up the book and immediately began reading. From the start there were exclamations and giggles - and loud ones!Suddenly, she was dying to show me things from the book. Look at this! Oh, mom, you need to see this! And then, finally...OH MY GOSH THE BOOK BECOMES A ROBOT!!!This is fabulous! The book is funny as can be, light-hearted, and my daughter absolutely loved it. If you still have doubts, do a quick web search. My daughter and I saw a video featuring the author and illustrator where they demonstrate the book and it's hilarious. If we hadn't already bought the book, we would have ordered it after watching it.An Absolute Gem of a book for your Beginning Reader!

We received an advance copy on loan several days before the book was released... we read it almost every night and were so happy when our order from Amazon arrived on release day for our "forever" book! My boys, 5 and, really enjoy it and it makes for a great bedtime/read-aloud story. Heads up (spoiler alert), the book's dust jacket helps it morph into a robo-book... figure out how to do it before you read it to your child the first time for max "wow" :)

He read it no less than ten times the first day he got it, and wept like we'd broken his heart when he found out we couldn't actually cook real Robo-Sauce. The prose is hilarious, but nothing beats the magic, hilarity, and beauty of what happens with this book's dust jacket. This is not something to read on Kindle. This is a book for kids to handle and love and mess with. This is an instant hit in our home and will be in yours, too.

Orbiting Jupiter, by Gary D. Schmidt

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—This contemporary story feels taut and austere, eschewing the humorous episodes that buoy Schmidt's earlier books. Jackson Hurd, a taciturn sixth grader, narrates the arrival to his family's farm of Joseph, a jumpy foster kid two years his senior. The author makes milking cows a substantial presence throughout the novel, and the steady rhythm of farm life coupled with the Hurd family's stolid acceptance calm Joseph enough to unveil his story. The straightforward narration—Schmidt's colloquial style is tinged here with a somber tone—proves integral to balancing the potential melodrama in the catalog of miseries Joseph has endured by age 13. He has suffered familial and institutional abuse, fathered a daughter he's never been allowed to see, and lost the baby's beloved mother. The novel initially takes the shape of a redemption story, as Joseph begins to imagine a future for himself through the Hurds' support and the persistent attention of a few dedicated teachers (readers of the author's previous books will appreciate the character connections here). While Joseph inches past his traumatic history into a new middle school existence, Jack's commitment to the older boy prompts his own evolution. Schmidt displays his talent for character development as Jack grows more deliberate and active in defense of Joseph, with a burgeoning comprehension of his own ethics of behavior. But further tragedy follows this hopeful period for both boys, though just the right details are included to keep this heartrending story palatable. VERDICT The matter-of-fact narrative voice ensures that the tragic plot never overwhelms this wrenching tale of growth and loss.—Robbin E. Friedman, Chappaqua Library, NY

Review #9 Autumn 2015 Kids’ Indie Next list * "The ending is bittersweet but as satisfying as a two-box-of-tissues tearjerker can possibly be (in the realm of juvenile fiction, Schmidt is the master of the emotional gut-punch)." —Horn Book "Schmidt writes with an elegant simplicity in this paean to the power of love...Readers will not soon forget either Joseph Brook or this spare novel written with love and grace." —Kirkus, starred review * "Told in Jack's spare, direct first-person voice, this story's style demonstrates the beautify of simplicity as it delineates the lives of its characters, each as superbly realized as the tumultuous New England setting." —Booklist, starred review * "The matter-of-fact narrative voice ensures that the tragic plot never overhwlms this wrenching tale of growth and loss."—School Library Journal, starred review * "A powerful story about second chances, all the more devastating because not everyone gets one."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Premise and conclusion By Dienne As we know from the product description, Jack's family has adopted Joseph who, at age 14 is already a father. He's also been in juvenile detention and, while under the influence of some unknown drug, tried to kill a teacher. He's rather twitchy, so don't stand behind him, don't touch him and be careful what you ask about. But life at the idyllic Hurd family organic farm seems to be doing Joseph some good. He does his chores without argument, especially milking Rosie who mooes to say she loves him. Jack's parents seem to know just how to handle Joseph and he slowly loosens up and tells the story of his daughter and her mother. Some of Joseph's teachers at school - those who can get past their own preconceived biases - realize he's quite smart and talented. Maybe there's even college in his future, whatever his abusive father might have to say about the matter. But there's still something missing in Joseph's life. Something big. A whole planet, in fact. Or, well, the child named for that planet. Joseph yearns to be united with his daughter and spends a great deal of his time and energy finding Jupiter. How far will Jack and his family go to help this fierce yet oddly tender foster child?I wanted to like this book. The characters are well drawn in sparse language that tells us just enough of what we need to know. Despite it's heavy theme, the book is not maudlin or prurient. We develop a deep respect for Joseph and his foster family. But there are several things that interfered with my enjoyment - even my acceptance - of the book, especially the more I think about it after finishing it. For one thing, there is an assumption running through the book that Joseph has little or no legal right to his daughter because he himself is a minor. I'm not entirely sure what time frame this book is supposed to be set in, but there are a few references to cell phones, so I guess we are to assume it's relatively modern. But under modern law, there is no reason why Joseph wouldn't have full legal access to his daughter. The law makes no distinction based on the age of a parent, even if the parent is a minor. Parental rights are extremely strong in this country (although I admit I don't know Maine's laws specifically). It would have to be proven that Joseph is not a fit parent in order for him to lose his rights, he would not have to prove his fitness in order to gain his rights. And he could be forced to sign away his rights while he's in juvenile detention - that would be considered duress, if not coercion or even blackmail considering the threats that are used to scare him into doing it (which such threats would probably carry no weight, as it is unlikely that any court would find consensual sex between minors of the same age to be rape). But the idea that either Joseph's father or the baby's mother's family would have more rights to Jupiter than Joseph himself is a little hard to believe, especially in this day and age when the father's rights movement has become so powerful. But we can set some of this aside as simply a literary vehicle to tell the story that Schmidt wants to tell. But then there's the ending. I suppose I should give a ***SPOILER ALERT***, even though I won't reveal exactly what the ending is, but it's difficult to review this book without at least talking in a round-about way about the ending. Suffice it to say that a major twist comes just when everything looks like it's going to work out. Think "My Sister's Keeper". It's the kind of ending that feels manipulative, if not even cruel. The kind of ending that will make you want to throw the book out the window. It's almost like Schmidt didn't know how to end the book without being sappy, so he took the easy way out instead. But then maybe he felt bad because he has to try to make it all okay again but only ends up feeling more contrived and manipulative. It's tough to write books about foster kids without becoming maudlin or prurient by wallowing in the details of the horrific lives many of them have led. I will give this book credit for avoiding those pitfalls, but it still can't avoid the pitfall of being manipulative, jerking around our emotions for effect. Still and all, I think the target audience will enjoy reading the book. Just know what you're getting yourself into.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful writing, intriguing story By James Hiller After finishing this book last night, I'm still a bit perplexed about this story, and I am vacillating about my star rating. My indecision stems from parts of the story that I absolutely love, the target audience that I suspect this book is intended to reach, and an ending (no spoilers here) that was a mix of disappointment and understanding. If I could give half stars, I think I'd land it at 3.5 stars.Jack lives with his family on a farm in Maine, and take in foster boy Joseph, who comes from a hideous past. Joseph, at age of thirteen, became a father of baby Jupiter, and spends the story wrestling with this reality. Jack and his family provide a warm, understanding cocoon for Joseph as he adjusts to adults (and a special cow) who care for him. Most of his time is spent with foster brother Jack, as Jack tries to navigate the complex mental issues of Joseph with honesty and occasional rule violations. It's the relationship between the two boy that drives the story, at least it did for me. Jack counting Joseph's smiles was profoundly beautiful and innocent, and a sign of Joseph's thaw. Much like the beautiful way that Schmidt describes the winter-soaked Maine countryside, deep in snow, ice, and frozen wonder. He writes his outside as frosty as can be, making the inside of Jack's home and the barn warm, nurturing places they need to be.Yet, it's in the ending that I felt I got lost a bit, and the narrative drive that kept me in the story got lost as well. Let's just say that I would have wanted a different ending. My disappointment with the ending doesn't mask the beauty of the story. This is not a story for elementary students. Schmidt's simplicity in the writing makes this a perfect story for middle schoolers who need a easier text to navigate, but not a "dumbing down" of the content. I could easily see what rich and insightful conversations this book will inspire in ELA classrooms across our middle schools. The title is Orbiting Jupiter, but for me, the true orbit is Jack and Joseph.

Good and sad and refreshing (I'm burned out on deaths from cancer) By Maggie Knapp Meet Jack and his kind and wise parents, who are the foster family for Joseph, a 14 year old non-custodial father with a huge chip on his shoulder. Using the same writing style (short, declarative sentences) that worked so well in OKAY FOR NOW, Schmidt tells a tale of a damaged boy and a too-sad-to-believe tale of true love gone wrong at age 13. "Jackie" has never been a particularly popular kid at school. Joseph gets off on the completely wrong foot with the 8th graders at school, making life even more miserable for them both. Not that Joseph particularly cares. If not for the bitter winter Maine weather, Joseph would be fine skipping the school bus (and probably school as well) and walking miles every day. He did as much when visiting Madeleine, the mother of his daughter, and gladly. What worked for me: I loved that there were good, kind adults, along with those who are clueless and hateful. School administrators have their good points, along with being rigid and intolerant. I enjoy Schmidt's "just the facts" writing style in this book, although it hasn't worked for me for some other of his books. What didn't work as well: the sad events eventually piled on to the point they lost believability, making them less sad to me. The ending was too pat for my taste.A book very much worth reading.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: Checked out from the library

I was sitting on the sand of La Jolla Cove the tide was high I reached up and grabbed her ankle to keep from being swept out before the start of an event. She is encouraging and motivational, a supportive and caring individual, deeply committed in setting and achieving goals including others through her process. I'm enjoying the steps to optimal health offered in the quotes, tips and daily tidbits. Thank you Kim for sharing yourself and knowledge and look forward to what lay ahead. Much Love my Sister, Ellen

Useful for an aspiring business owner By Max I am an aspiring business owner and I have noticed that learning someones myer-briggs personality type makes you a much more effective leader. From looking at how my mentors run thier businesses and how they use the information gained from personality testing their employees I am convinced that this is the way of the future. As an ENTJ it is critical that I learn to understand the personalities which are on the opposite end of the spectrum like the ISFJ. Good book, short and to the point, If they had a box set I would buy that just to learn all the types

I absolutely love the idea of a personality-based guide. It makes complete sense since different personality types behave and approach life so differently. This was a great read and I've already found it to be pretty useful. Recommended.

Zach is back and better than ever as he experiences a Blood Moon, explores the Dungeon, takes on a goblin army, and battles the evil Brain of Cthulu. I noticed this book had much fewer typos than the other two, but I still think it should be slightly longer. Everything else I LOVE, though, and I can't wait for the next book. Great job!
