By Kitty Honeycutt My love for the Fae folk having grown vastly over the past few years, I decided to delve into the wonderful world of Myra Nour's "Demon Killer" after having read the synopsis. The heroine of the story, Azra, is not only strong but she's exceedingly clever. Having been attacked by a race of demons that prey upon the Fae folk of the forest, Azra finds herself impregnated after a brutal rape. It matters not that the child is half demon, Azra feels the need to protect her babe and in doing so, she takes on not only the folk of her land but outsiders as well. This story was one I'll never forget, Myra Nour succeeded in taking us into an entirely different world than many books I've read dealing with Fae beings, the story was exciting, adventurous and extremely well written. I would suggest anyone that is even remotely interested in the world of Faeries to read this novel. You will forever be changed by this amazing story!

Fluid style and a stellar dark fantasy read By Heather Rexon-Capewell It's no surprise to my reads how much I love the darker side of fantasy, demons, or the fae. Myra Nour blends all three in Demon Killer. This is a first for me and the blurb hooked me straight away. It's a quick read, but it's a complete story set in a fantasy world. The writing style is fluid, and I enjoyed the extended vocabulary often missing from self-published books. The editing was stellar too. From front to back the reader is given a clean (minus the mentioned scene in the blurb) read free of glaring errors. Also I found that mentioned scene tasteful and perfectly executed, although the warning will be helpful for anyone with triggers. If it isn't a trigger, don't let it hold you back.I look forward to reading more from Myra Nour.

This is a super short one, but doesn't lack punch!Azra is a creature of Fae, and she is attacked by a Demon, and this leads to her having a child from the attack. She loves her child but it is half demon - which causes the Fae to want to kill her child! After he is taken over by the demon part of his heritage, she does everything she can to save him, he is half her too! This is fast paced, intriguing and just really fantastic! My only complaint was that there wasn't more of it to read! Even though it is about Fae and demons, you should never underestimate a mothers love! Not recommended for younger readers.

The Edge, by Roland Smith

From School Library Journal Gr 6–10—Six months after a perilous attempt to summit Mount Everest in Peak (HMH, 2007), 15-year-old Peak Marcello and a film crew are off to climb the Pamir mountains of Afghanistan. Dubbed the Peace Climb, in which 200 international teens are climbing the world's various mountains simultaneously, the event offers Peak an opportunity to exercise his Spiderman-like skills on something other than the tall buildings in his native New York. Joined by his mother, Teri, an experienced climber who was known as The Fly in her day, and by Zopa, a respected Sherpa friend from Everest, Peak is more focused on the climb than on Afghanistan's outlaw factions, which pose more than a slight travel risk. When kidnappers kill the documentary director and two guides and take Teri, Zopa, and others in the middle of the night, Peak and ex-Marine climber Ethan set out to rescue them. A budding romantic interest in one of the teen hostages, French climber Josette, is one more reason Peak runs into the face of danger with no weapon, no means of communication, and temperature extremes that ensure an untimely death. All the while being tracked by a shen (snow leopard), the unlikely heroes pool their military and outdoor survival knowledge for a nail-biting rescue attempt that will have middle school and older reluctant readers turning pages. VERDICT Extreme sports meets ruthless killers in a survival-of-the-fittest chase.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

Review "Readers familiar with the first book and newcomers alike will enjoy this trek."—Publishers Weekly "Extreme sports meets ruthless killers in a survival-of-the-fittest chase."—School Library Journal "This sequel easily stands by itself, though readers new to Peak's world are likely to be so enthralled by the mountain-climbing action that they will go back to the previous book to tackle Everest with Peak as well."—Horn Book Magazine

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Cat and Mouse In Afghanistan By prisrob 4.5 starsMy grandson and I both read this book. He liked it a lot, I thought it was superb for a ten year old. He is a voracious reader, and is quite critical of some books. He knows what he likes and what is not going to interest him.Peak Marcello and his mother are invited to Afghanistan to climb with an international peace climb group. Afghanistan would give me pause, but off they went. The premise is multiple climbers, 200 in all, climbing indifferent areas all over the world. This is a book filled with some violence and multiple stressors, I would suggest you know how much your child can handle. In Afghanistan there is a constant tension between tribes and areas, and several of the climbers are kidnapped. In this group is Peak's mother, and Peak is determined to find and rescue her.I particularly liked the parts of the book that described climbing. I have always had an interest in Everest and the high mountains in Asia. I have followed and read the stories of the mountain climbers, and in particular the seasons when difficulties arise. This was all new to my grandson, and he liked the storyline and the climbing. Peak and his counterparts who were searching for his mother with him, filled the book with tension. Peak is an interesting character, and my grandson would like to read the author's first book, and others to follow. My grandson looked up Afghanistan on his globe. and then read a little bit about its history. The book also included Afghan history, and it was a good tool for educating children.Recommended. prisrob 09-17-15

"I LOVE this novel By Amazon Customer I tell my students not to use capitals but more sophisticated vocabulary and I am sure Vincent would agree, but forgive me for saying, "I LOVE this novel!!" I laughed out loud so many times and even made my family stop what they were doing to read sections to them - - and they laughed too. I cried, no wept in other sections and with the vivid description of the terror the characters' experienced, I was scared to death.I had to wait until this year's group of seventh graders finished PEAK before I could start, so their was a great deal of anticipation building especially when my co-teacher came in starting to talk excitedly about the book and I had to stop him. It did not disappoint - what a ride.I have used PEAK with seventh graders since the novel came out and know the characters and Roland's writing maybe better than he does. (just kidding, Roland). Thank you Roland Smith for including Zopa. When I talk to students about which characters would have to stay if there was a sequel Zopa is always at the top of the list and the two Peas not far behind. Also, it was thrilling to have Teri in the picture as well - what a great Mom.I would disagree with those who compare PEAK to this novel. While they have some of the same characters and oh, how I love the characters, they are two very different books. PEAK is clearly about Peak and Everest. I believe THE EDGE is truly about the hope for PEACE. When Zopa tells Peak to ask the other characters how he wants the story to end... BRILLIANT!! Students could spend a week discussing all of the elements of literature!! And for those who just want to read and not analyze, it is a quirky twist that shows how we as a society need to take back the narrative. The snow leopard shadow is has to be my favorite as I believe animals are truly intuitive! Books should make us feel and think - - this novel does that in a divine way. Thank you, Roland Smith!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's a sequel to Peak but you don't need to have to read the first book to enjoy this book By John B. Goode This young reader book is 236 pages and a very quick read. It's a sequel to Peak but you don't need to have to read the first book to enjoy this book. The setting of this story is Peak, a young mountain climber and his peace climb in the Pamirs. The story veered off in a way that I did not expect. Young climbers will enjoy this story though it isn't only or all about climbing, It's more a thriller. In a way, I do wish there was more written about the climbing experience as it provided an interesting background. Which reminds me that as the setting was in Afghanistan, there was some description of the country and what it had gone through/is going through politically. And again, I felt the author could have gone into more detail there too. The part that surprised me was that there was quite a bit of violence in it. I don't want to go into detail but suffice it to say that quite a few characters did not make it.Apart from all that, the writing was quite well written and easy to read as befits a young readers book. The characters were all well drawn and realistic. It only took me a quick two days to finish the book and I enjoyed it. I would summarize this book as a climbing thriller that takes place in the Pamirs with a lot of adult content.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Conscious people, conscious company, conscious capitalism By Michael L. Stallard John Wooden, the legendary coach of the UCLA men's basketball team, has been referred to as the philosopher coach. After listening to John Mackey's two-disk CD set entitled Passion and Purpose: The Power of Conscious Capitalism, I now think of him as a "philosopher CEO." Mackey is the founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market, an organic grocer based in Austin, Texas. Like John Wooden, Mackey is a thoughtful and effective leader. He also happens to be a student of philosophy.Disk one is a live talk Mr. Mackey gave to a group in Austin. During Mackey's talk, we learn about his philosophy of "Conscious Capitalism" and how it will prevail over time. To Mackey, globalization is really an anti-corporate movement. He notes that machine and war metaphors are often used to describe corporations and people don't trust them. There is a need for a new corporate philosophy and Conscious Capitalism is Mackey's view of the type of corporations society needs.Whole Foods' slogan is "Whole foods, whole people, whole planet." Applying the slogan's connecting logic to Conscious Capitalism, Mackey states "Conscious people, conscious company, conscious capitalism." It also happens to be how the CD is organized. Mackey describes his philosophy of Conscious Capitalism then moves on to describe Conscious Companies. Peeling the onion back another layer, he describes the conscious person. "Conscious Companies" are those formed by entrepreneurs who shape a higher purpose that pursues the timeless values of goodness, truth, beauty and/or heroism. The aim is to make the world a better place. While a necessity to survive, profit is a byproduct of the pursuit. The happiness of those involved is another byproduct of Conscious Companies. It comes not only from pursuing the deeper purpose but also from the connection that forms among the people who pursue that purpose together in community. Mackey cites other Conscious Companies including Apple, Google, The Container Store, Costco and Southwest Airlines. In addition to pursuing deeper purposes, Conscious Companies optimize stakeholder interests. Mackey believes that management should focus on customer and employee needs then shareholders will be pleased with the resulting profits. In other words, happy employees make happy customers make happy investors; it's a virtuous circle, according to Mackey. He does recognize, however, that shareholders must have the final word because they are the last to be paid and could be taken advantage of by management and other stakeholders.During Mackey's presentation we learn all about the myriad of programs and benefits Whole Foods Market has in place. It's impressive. Included in the innovative practices is one Mr. Mackey refers to as "appreciations" -- ending meetings by taking a moment to thank people for services they've done or for their positive qualities. Mr. Mackey notes that even the Whole Foods Market board of directors meetings end with appreciations. He states that it grows love in organizations and he observes that the person changed the most is the one giving appreciation. The second disk is an interview that provides a deeper look at John Mackey, the conscious person. This might sound egotistical on its face. Listening to the CD, I didn't feel that way. I believe Mr. Mackey's motivation in articulating his views is to help people see a way for corporations to be a force for good in society rather than the psychopathic entities they have been described as in certain media such as the documentary film and book "The Corporation."During the interview, we learn about John Mackey's journey as a leader and as a conscious person. As an advisor to corporate and government leaders, I'm interested in what shapes them and so I found this part utterly fascinating. The inner lives of corporate leaders are rarely revealed. It took courage for Mackey to be so open. Although some may not like what they hear, most, I suspect, will appreciate his honesty and agree with his values. In my own research I've found that organizations that thrive and survive for sustained periods of time have thoughtful leaders such as John Mackey. "Conscious" describes them quite well. They are aware because they invest time to reflect on their lives, their work and their values, to do the "inner work" as Parker Palmer described it in his masterpiece, Let Your Life Speak. They also have rich relationships with family and friends, which the research of Insead Business School professor Manfred F.R. kets deVries has identified as being critical to sustained superior performance.Although Mr. Mackey doesn't use the term "unconscious capitalist," it aptly describes the leader who often irreparably damages organizations. These men and women act with a desire to personally win in a competitive marketplace but their thought processes don't consider whether their actions reflect the good, the true, the beautiful and the heroic. It should come as no surprise then that the lives of unconscious capitalists rarely end well.Passion and Purpose: The Power of Conscious Capitalism is a valuable resource for leaders and those who aspire to be leaders. I highly recommend it. Hopefully, this is the beginning of John Mackey's work to publicly share his views so that others might learn from his wisdom and experience.

An Interesting Audio Book for Times Such as These By Tim Drake John Mackey may have taken some hits in the press for recent comments, but don't let that dissuade you from this excellent set of CDs. They will be of great interest particularly for business leaders and CEOs.Mackey co-founded Whole Foods Market in 1980. In this 2.5 hour CD set, he sets forth his vision for a business fueled by the entrepreneurial spirit and the spiritual values of love, compassion, and forgiveness. It's both inspiring and practical, especially when he talks about balancing a business' purpose with profitability. The greatest disappointment was when Mackey began diverting into the New Age "Course in Miracles" and about his efforts "divining Jesus."Aside from that, Mackey presents a revolutionary model for leading a business in today's marketplace. If there were more like him, the world might be a better place.

You need not be an employee of whole foods market to appreciate John Mackey's approach to running a business. Others would do better to follow his example. Also, Enjoyed the second cd where he speaks about his personal journey. Very uplifting.

By Kathysue Dorey I teach domestic and sexually assaulted survivors to creatively problem solve, become emotionally healthy, and how to protect themselves physically and non-physically in my 1-year Freedom Legacy training system. And I needed a comprehensive, user-friendly and FUN resource tool for these women when teaching literally ALL of the creative thinking skills contained within “Weaving Creativity into Every Strand of Your Curriculum.”Because these women come from varied cultural/academic backgrounds and life experiences, each learn differently. What works for one, may not work for another – and sometimes I have to change out my curriculum within minutes. This is when this book comes into PLAY. The information presented is so easy to learn and can be put into action immediately!“Weaving Creativity” truly is a gift that keeps on giving. My current Freedom Legacy women who have graduated from the program are now continuing on as Mentors for the next group of women and already have created lesson plans from the ideas and tips suggested within this book! To see their faces light up when they realize how much FUN it is going to be is priceless. And this book even provides a clear, concise background on creativity.“Weaving Creativity” has become a staple in the Freedom Legacy program as a resource tool for myself, our mentors, and our students. Thank you Cyndi and Julia for developing such a treasure!

By Michelle Korenfeld Today's students need the kind of teaching this book promotes like air. You will not believe how much more motivated to reach higher they will become, even if you try one exercise out of this treasure trove of activity ideas each day. Not only will your students' learning be more meaningful, but you as a teacher will be gratified re-finding the pleasure of teaching. Your students will wait for those teaching assignments, and you will be looked upon as a facilitator guiding them to success in the 21st century.

It also has fun activities for engaged parents. I showed this to a friend of mine who works in a challenging Buffalo City School. He suggested that this book be added to the teacher’s library.
