Brown In just the first few paragraphs, she was spot on with identifying what my problem were; she had me at page 1! As you continue to read, and she writes in a style where you don't want to put the book down (ask my dentist as I tried to read while getting a cleaning), you increase in motivation and empowerment. Peggy really makes it seem so easy in the beginning and she gives you tips of what to do long-term for continued success. All the excuses you had seem to go out the door as she identifies your struggles and give you varies options on how to resolve them. Author of this little gem is clearly one of those gifted people.Self improvement should be a relatively simple and straight forward process, but since most of us are a bit screwy and self absorbed in the head, what should be a natural and integral part of our existence, gets pushed towards the back. One of the choices we have when interested is to find someone or something that has the tools to let us get on with the job of improving our selves and our lives. The author has clearly undergone some sort of personal transformation. The tools that got her there have been clearly outlined in this very valuable little book. IF you put into practice what is being taught here, I have no doubt that you will see remarkable improvements in the areas you are targeting for yourself.

I was sent this book to review as I'm the author of THE GENTLE WAY III: Master Your Life. Each letter in Part 1 gives information on making your life more successful. Some are simple such as when people ask you how are you today you respond "I'm great!." Even if you aren't you will be for that instant, and it grows. Other suggestions require more effort on your part, such as meditation and yoga. In Part 2 she explains how to start implementing these suggestions so that you don't feel overwhelmed and say, "Where do I start?" She says just pick a letter and concentrate on doing that one exercise. I highly recommend this book!

By Cathy Juntura I've used many supplements and I've been going to the gym, but the effect have not been all that great. Therefore I bought this book, and I've already started seeing the difference since I started to use the workout moments from this book. There's a variety of "well-known" excercises in the book, but there's some new ones that I've never heard off but have worked really well for me. With the help of this book I've so far lost about 4-5 pounds of body fat and I've also been able to gain some additional muscle mass.

We Make the Road by Walking: A Year-Long Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation, and Activation, by Brian D. McLaren

Review "This is one of the most remarkable documents in recent Christian writings...There is no evangelizing here, and no preaching, only a sinewy, but orderly and open, presentation of the faith that holds. The result is as startling as it is beautiful."―Phyllis Tickle, author, The Age of the Spirit"Brian McLaren has a talent for expressing theological viewpoints in a way that doesn't divide the camp. He gives everyone on the theological spectrum, from orthodox to progressive, something to chew on and contemplate. His new book, WE MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING, doesn't disappoint."―Charles Toy, co-founder of The Christian Left"A ton of people have been waiting for this book-they just didn't know it! Brian has given us a clear and compelling guide to walking the Jesus path together, around the table, in the living room, discussing and learning and growing. This book is going to help so many people."―Rob Bell, author of What We Talk About When We Talk About God"It is at once inspiring and challenging, ancient and contemporary, intellectually rigorous and profoundly practical. It changed the way I engage Scripture, the way I pray, the way I experience communion, and the way I interact with my neighbors."―Rachel Held Evans, author, A Year of Biblical Womanhood"WE MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING has given me the tools I needed to make sense of my friendships and weave them into something that makes our connections more meaningful; the community that I have always longed for, a community that accepts me for me, a community that faithfully lives out the gospel through its actions, treating all people with respect, value, and like they matter."―Romal Tune, author, God’s Graffiti: Inspiring Stories for Teens"This is Brian McLaren at his best, and I think this is what so many readers want from him: Deeply rooted in scripture, yet offering fresh, even radical, readings. WE MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING will surely be a benefit and blessing to many."―Tony Jones (tonyj.net), theologian-in-residence at Solomon's Porch, author of The Church Is Flat"I love this book, because through each page you will hear the whisper of Jesus echo in your heart. You will find yourself taken on a journey that will make you more alive, more loving, and with a bigger vision for changing the world. I'm buying copies for all my friends!"―Canon Mark Russell, CEO, Church Army UK and Ireland

At first, I was going to rate this book three stars, but after much consideration I think four stars is more accurate. I want to point out at the outset that I am not a liberal Christian, but I think a lot of great ideas have come out of that camp, and a lot of good ideas have come out of the conservative camp as well. The risks of both are essentially that extreme liberalism says there is nothing sacred enough that deserves our defense, and extreme conservatism says nothing we have done in the past is worth changing. I went into this book knowing it was more on the liberal side of things because I like to hear everyone's perspectives. With that being said, McLaren and I agree on most of his talking points. I found his assessment of the poor in our societies, the gross injustices and abuses that we as Christians should be taking an honest look at, to be valuable. He obviously is a thoughtful and deeply engaged Christian man. The points I disagreed with him on are centered mostly around his uncompromising adherence to liberation theology and nonviolence. Again, much good has come from liberation theology and nonviolence, but I find that the constant, unrelenting use of liberation theology as a filter to promote a heavily politicized (read: polarized) Christianity to be unpalatable. Such filtering feels, at times, like a hijacking, as if liberation theology's proponents would like to force their brand of Christianity.I tend to be simplistic in my own personal faith, avoiding dogma and doctrines, preferring to do Greek and Hebrew close word studies, and prayerfully come to my own conclusions about things. Along that vein, I don't think Jesus was a socialist or a Democrat, nor was he a capitalist or a Republican. To try to make his actions and words fit into such a limited and polarized viewpoint just seems... unethical. Of course, liberal and conservative Christians hate to hear this, and are generally fairly defensive of their worldview, as many of us can be.Still, I understand and appreciate why many of the ideas in liberation theology, nonviolence, and Christian environmentalism developed. As Christians, we should be supremely concerned with compassionate service and reaching out to the poor and lost, as Jesus did. We should be responsible citizens of the earth, acknowledging the sacredness of it and not exploiting it to feed the sickness of our greed. And peace should be our highest ideal, constantly pursued, choosing more effective and skillful means to resolve conflicts than with violence. And yet, *everything* in Christianity doesn't have to be framed around liberation theology, as if Christianity were just the faith wing of socialist politics. And I think a solid argument could be biblically made to support an idea of reasonable self-defense too. The fact that Peter even had a sword on his side while he was with Jesus shows that self-defense is sometimes just a normal part of living around crazy people. That doesn't undermine or lessen Christ's pointing out to Peter that those who live by the sword, die by the sword. So at times, I think McLaren was a bit over the top about nonviolence and liberation theology, and for me it became, well, annoying. But that has nothing to do with my opinion of him, which is high, or the value of his writing, which is refreshing. Discourse is a good thing, as well as thinking for yourself and not getting lured into the intoxication of groupthink, and I would venture to say McLaren would probably be supportive of me dissenting with some of his ideas. All in all, good read, and worth the purchase.

We Make the Road by Walking does the same. When I was a young pastor in the evangelical church, questioning, doubting, struggling in my faith A New Kind of Christian lit the way through my very dark valley. This was followed by more joyous years of discovery and books like The Adventures of Missing The Point and A Generous Orthodoxy. These books challenged me into deeper wonder, bolder curiosity, and called me to keep walking, keep seeking, keep uncovering theGod that was all around me. I have come to Brian’s new book We Make the Road by Walking nearly ten years after picking up the first. I have been voyaging a long but beautifully profound road and Brian’s books have met me at every corner. This book comes at a perfect time for the Church, Society and for me personally. We Make the Road by Walking is a travelers guide that we can use together as friends, families, and communities, that grants each pilgrim the freedom to make there own way, together. Brian provides a complex, deeply biblical narrative theology that starts with creation and genesis and treks through the entirety of the Bible. We Make the Road by Walking challenges us to read the text aloud in large sections, to draw connections through the beginning, middle, and end, to trace meta-narratives that weave their way along the path, and as we find ourselves, our neighbors and our enemies in the text to draw deeply on the connections we make individually and communally. We Make the Road by Walking is Brian’s one year lectionary, his comprehensive biblical narrative theology, his guide to communities of seekers, questioners, vagabonds, doubters, and free agents. He seeks to lead each of us to connect to the Divine God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This text is deeply Trinitarian, non-dualist, communitarian, provocative, and honoring of textual tensions. You can clearly see the “third way” thinking that Brian first mentioned in A New Kind of Christian, illustrated and lived out in magnificent form as a way of understanding the sacred text more clearly. It is time for the world to hear and understand another historical perspective…a God honoring way at looking at the sacred text...A way that builds community and Neighbors…A way that invites the story to continue, the road to be built and the journey to be shared. It is clear that Brian wants every person to find their own voice of faith, to step into their own role as theologian and make their own road by walking…

A Dubious Disciple Book Review By Dubious Disciple With 52 chapters–one for each week of the year–McLaren takes us on a year-long quest toward “aliveness,” as taught by Jesus through words and example. Each chapter lists a few suggested Bible readings, gives a few pages of inspiration, and lists suggested discussion topics. His idea is that we would use this book for Bible study, with family or close friends in Christ.“Aliveness” is a wonderful description for the type of existence Jesus wishes to share. Where the Synoptic gospels speak of the Kingdom of Heaven, the Gospel of John prefers terminology like life, life of the ages, life to the full (all much more precise translations than “eternal life”). How are we to understand the Kingdom, then? Some possibilities that resonate with our current-day language: how about The global commonwealth of God. Maybe God’s regenerative economy. Perhaps God’s beloved community or God’s holy ecosystem. You get the idea. We’re talking about a transformation of this world, not a distant kingdom in the sky.McLaren is a liberal Christian. He is not going to preach doctrine, and in fact, even an atheist could be inspired to a more wholesome, meaningful life by Jesus. Nor does McLaren delve in church theology. You won’t be taught you’re a horrible sinner in need of repentance and covering by the salvific blood of a sacrificed god. You won’t be taught that life’s purpose is to guess which religion to believe in, so that after you die you can float away to heaven. Instead, you’ll be reminded that God’s creation is good, we are good, life is good, and aliveness is an attainable dream. Jesus taught us how.I’m a fan of McLaren’s straight-forward, inspirational writing. Definitely worth reading.Jericho Books, © 2014, 281 pagesISBN: 978-1-4555-1400-7

Le Morte D'Arthur: Vol. 2, by Thomas Malory

Review "Le Morte d'Arthur remains an enchanted sea for the reader to swim about in, delighting at the random beauties of fifteenth-century prose."--Robert Graves

Language Notes Text: English (translation)

From the Author There has been humour, heartbreak, and breathtaking visions, and the continuous excitement of trying to capture the beauty of Malory's scenes in watercolour. In the quietest moments, I liked to imagine ghosts roosting in my studio - from distant figures who may have existed and inspired the legend, to the storytellers, artists, and their creations that have served it. There are rewards in such good company and I feel most privileged to have contributed to a tradition so close to my heart, and served a world of such beauty.....beauty with a serrated edge. Slater Since reviews of entirely different editions seem doomed to appear together: This is a review of the two-volume edition of Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte D'Arthur" published by Penguin Books, edited by Janet Cowan, with an Introduction by John Lawlor. Originally part of the Penguin English Library (1969), it was later (1986) included in the Penguin Classics, in both the older, smaller (mass-market) Penguin format and the current, somewhat larger format; they all appear to be identical in contents. However, I will discuss other versions, notably the Modern Library, the Wordsworth Classics, and the old Everyman's Library editions. The Penguin edition is based primarily on the 1485 text printed by William Caxton. It is modernized in spelling, but not in grammar. Each volume has a glossary of proper names, and another of archaic words; the most difficult words are generally noted and translated at the foot of the page on which they appear. A small section of notes in each volume deal with some confusing passages, and identify places where Caxton's text has been emended -- usually from the "Winchester Manuscript," now in the British Library, discovered in a safe at Winchester College in 1934, after being mistakenly catalogued under the title of a 1634 printed edition. The manuscript differs from Caxton's text in thousands of places, mostly minor, but some very important. (There is now another set of editions, based primarily on the longer Winchester text; unfortunately, modernizations of that version are either abridged, or, in my opinion, more or less open rewritings, or both, like Keith Baines' "rendition" -- not to mention John Steinbeck's unfinished "Acts of King Arthur ...," which is a retelling as a modern novel. Two complete old-spelling editions of this second, longer, version, are in paperback, the Oxford Standard Authors original-spelling edition, as "Malory: Complete Works," followed by a recent Norton Critical Edition, as "Le Morte D'Arthur," on somewhat different lines. I have reviewed them together, under the "Complete Works" title; both are worthwhile, for readers willing and able to deal with them.) Among the readily available editions of the Caxton "Morte," the Penguin edition is my favorite; a judicious balance of modern, or regularized, spellings, clarifying punctuation, and short explanations, without distortion of the not-yet-quite-Modern English of the sentences. Although Lawlor's introduction is beginning to show its age (Malory's French and English sources are treated as evidence in a then-current critical debate), Janet Cowan's text remains exceptionally attractive. The two-volume format is easy to handle, but can be a bit of a nuisance; if you want the whole story, be sure to order both! It was Caxton, the pioneer of English printing, who assigned the title "The Death of Arthur" to a work which begins with Arthur's conception and birth, for reasons which he rather laboriously explained in a final colophon. (For those of you who know enough French to see that the title should begin "La Mort" -- the spelling is, as elsewhere in the text, based on medieval *Norman* standards, and the Parisian certainty of Death's feminine gender did not dictate English scribal -- or printing-house -- practices in the fifteenth century.) Until the publication of the Winchester text in 1947, all editions of this famous late Middle English compilation of stories of King Arthur and his Knights had to be based, more or less (and often less) directly, on the 1485 printing by William Caxton, of which two copies have survived, one missing fifteen leaves. Unhappily, most nineteenth-century printings (the first two both in 1816) were based on the very corrupt ("improved") 1634 Stansby printing, sometimes sporadically compared to the Caxton text, or were in some other way "corrected" for (mainly) Victorian readers. In 1817, the poet Robert Southey tried to rely on Caxton, but had to replace the missing pages in the copy he was using with those in one of the reprintings, in 1498 and 1528, by Caxton's apprentice and successor, the self-named Wynkyn "de Worde." (The first is the original "illustrated Malory," the second is the first intentionally "modernized" Malory, customers having apparently complained that a book written in the 1460s was sounding a bit old-fashioned.) In addition, Southey's publisher seems to have used Stansby as a printing-house copy, directly or through the competing reprintings of 1816. Uncertainty as to proper editorial principles, reflecting uncertainty as to Malory's literary worth, and concern over the "immoral" contents of a book thought likely to appeal to boys, continued through the nineteenth century. (And into our time, as well.) The three-volume edition (with extensive apparatus) by H. Oskar Sommer of 1889-1891 finally used the surviving copies of the 1485 edition as the sole authority. (I have not seen a reported reprinting of the full version, but Sommer's "Morte" text, without the introduction, notes, glossary, etc., is available in a hypertext format). It was presumably used by F.J. Simmons, who edited the ornate J.M. Dent edition of 1893-1894, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley (reprinted a few years ago by Crown; Dover has issued an illustrations-only volume as well). Sommer's text was certainly used by Israel Gollancz for another Dent edition, the modernized four-volume Temple Classics version of 1897. This text appears to have been reset for a two-volume edition in 1906, in Dent's Everyman's Library series, with normalized (modern) spellings. There are some peculiarities in this version; for example, the spelling of names often changes between volumes one and two. For most purposes it was reliable enough, and was widely read during much of the twentieth century, appearing in the US in hardcover in Dutton reprints of the Everyman's Library, with a paperback edition in the 1970s. It seems to be out of print, but used copies show up regularly. The Dent editions of the "Morte" had competition from other modernized texts, based on the Sommer edition, which included a revision by Sir Edward Strachey of his somewhat expurgated ("for boys") 1868 Globe edition for Macmillan. This version was replaced by a new Macmillan edition in 1903, edited by the distinguished bibliographer, and able editor of popular editions, A.W. Pollard. Pollard's text has been reprinted by a number of American publishers, and was at one time a Book Club offering, advertised as "unexpurgated" -- which it was, compared to some Victorian editions, and most especially to Sidney Lanier's "The Boy's King Arthur." The Pollard text is available on-line. It has been reprinted yet again, in the current Modern Library hardcover and paperback editions, with a fine new introduction, by Elizabeth J. Bryan, describing briefly the Arthurian Legend, and the problem of the two texts of the "Morte." The Pollard text also appears to underlie the Wordsworth Classics paperback, which has a helpful new Introduction, by Helen Cooper, and includes an index of characters (by Book and Chapter, not page number), but lacks notes. It is a relatively inexpensive, if not overwhelmingly attractive, alternative to the other editions.Since the appearance of the Penguin "Morte," there have been two major technical publications of the Caxton text: a facsimile, edited by Paul Needham (1976), and a critical edition, edited by James Spisak (1983). I am not aware of a popular edition which has taken advantage of these resources.[Note, February 2015: There is a new critical edition of Malory, edited by P.J.C. Field, published in two volumes by D.S. Brewer, as volume 80 in the "Arthurian Studies" series ("Sir Thomas Malory: Le Morte Darthur," Cambridge, 2013). It is based on both the Caxton and Winchester texts, and attempts to arrive at a state of the text closer to Malory's own than either example. This (expensive) edition has been reviewed by Kenneth Hodges for the on-line "The Medieval Review" (The Medieval Review 15.02.03)][Addendum, December 2015: There is now a dual-text edition of the Caxton and Winchester editions available for Kindle: “Complete Works of Sir Thomas Malory,” from Delphi Classics (Series Five Book 1). I’ve reviewed it: in brief, it consists of Pollard’s modernized text of the Caxton edition, with his glossary (but not his character index), and, from an unspecified source, an old-spelling edition of the Winchester Manuscript. I have noticed that the latter has errors on the order of “Qur” for “our,” but does’t seem, on first inspection, to be *too* badly corrupted. (I may be wrong about this….)[The Delphi edition is an inexpensive way for anyone interested in the “Morte D’Arthur” to get a good look at both versions. Unfortunately, while the Pollard text has hyperlinks to Caxton’s book and chapter divisions, there is no equivalent for the longer Winchester Manuscript, nor is there any cross-referencing between matching passages. For the Winchester text, at least, the intrigued reader may well then decide to try the Norton Critical Edition, Vinaver’s “Malory: Complete Works,” or the solid, but abridged, version edited by Helen Cooper for the Oxford World’s Classics series, as “Le Morte Darthur: The Winchester Manuscript.”][Addendum, December 9, 2015: Vinaver’s approach to the unity of the "Morte" is now taken for granted by some. On December 7, 2015, BBC Culture, in explaining the basis of a list of “the 100 greatest British novels,” specifically classed “Morte D’Arthur” as a short story collection. Leaving aside the different question of whether Medieval romances meet one’s definition of “a novel,” many of the eight “Tales” into which Vinaver divided the text are more like short — or longer — novels than they are like short stories. In the Norton Critical Edition, “The Tale of Sir Tristams de Lyones” runs to over 250 pages — and does not contain the full story, at that. (Of course, it too can be broken down into shorter "tales" as the focus of the narrative shifts.)]

The Two Free Kindle Volumes Are A Worthwhile Find By Pop Bop If you are interested in Welsh myths and legends, or tales related to Arthur and Merlin, or even just the roots of classic fantasy, you have probably encountered some reference to Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur". I've been aware of it for years; from time to time I've owned and lost or misplaced yard sale paperback copies of it. But I'd never actually gotten around to reading it. Well, if you're in that boat, or just curious, this is an excellent free, well formatted, readable and navigable Kindle copy. This version has been issued in two volumes, which are currently available as two separate Kindle freebie downloads. (Volume 1 and Volume 2. Volume 1 has the first nine "books" and Volume 2 has the remaining "books". ) Volume 1 opens with an excellent introduction by A. W. Pollard addressing the book's authorship and history. It also contains the original preface by William Caxton, who, in 1469, was the original printer of the book. This set of volumes contains all of the original books and chapters, as edited and mauled by Caxton in his rush to produce the book, except that spelling and some grammar has been updated. Just from the point of view of its convenience, readability and accessibility this is a righteous freebie find. But, is it worth actually downloading and reading? I surprised myself by concluding that it is. This book is the source of all of the stories that we think we know about Arthur. (From the sword in the stone, on.) Scholars continue to argue about whether there was an Arthur at all, and if so if he was more than just a local Briton chieftain, but while that is a fascinating question for scholars and historians, (see, for example, this excellent treatment Worlds of Arthur: Facts and Fictions of the Dark Ages), to me that has little or no bearing on the joys of "Le Mort d'Arthur". The Arthur stories are an essential foundation to almost all classic British and, by extension American, high fantasy. Even though most of it was recycled from fancy pants old French versions of even older Welsh stories, Arthur must be reckoned with. And these stories are a hoot. I didn't read them closely and with an academic's eye. Heck, I skimmed some parts. But there is depth and feeling here. These stories are more gripping, more stirring, and more immediate than the Disnefied versions would suggest. These are well-imagined and well-told tales of honor and bravery and sacrifice, with real style and substance. So, if you are so inclined, and if you've ever wondered a bit about the Arthur phenomenon, this is a convenient, cheap and painless way to deepen your understanding and reward your effort. Can't ask much more than that from a Kindle freebie.

I haven't read a lot of Arthurian books, Le Mort D'Arthur was the first. You come to hate and love Lancelot so much for his hypocrisy and his repentance. A very interesting book. It's funny how most of this book is not about Arthur at all. He's claimed to be this noble knight and king, but most of the story is of his knights, some of which are much better fighters and have more worship than him.

Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. This first edition credited the work's fictional protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. It was published under the considerably longer original title The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is a fictional autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer)—a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. Crusoe (the family name corrupted from the German name "Kreutznaer") sets sail from the Queen's Dock in Hull on a sea voyage in August 1651, against the wishes of his parents, who want him to pursue a career, possibly in law. After a tumultuous journey where his ship is wrecked in a storm, his lust for the sea remains so strong that he sets out to sea again

WARNING: This is NOT the original text By Joshua Q Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.[[...]]

Scribe After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. This Norton Critical Edition is the perfect package to gain a deep appreciation for this masterpiece of the English language. So do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book today and transport yourself back to your youth and also to a time long past. It's a journey you won't regret taking.

An adventure, but different than you might expect By frumiousb The author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, is generally credited with being one of the first novel writers in the English language. The book is surely an influential one-- spawning countless imitations, derivations, and (in our era) reality-based television shows. It is billed, quite fairly, as an adventure story. However, it is a very different kind of adventure than the modern action-sequence laden book which readers today may expect. It is an adventure story, but one which centers primarily on mastery and morality. The morality is placed centrally in the book when Crusoe rejects the advice of his father to accept the happiness of the middle class life to which he was born. Against the wishes of his family, he runs off to sea to find adventure. It is not until Crusoe literally recreates a primitive approximation of that middle class life for himself on his island that he is freed.Crusoe is also a story about the ability of mankind to master his surroundings through hard work, patience, and Christianity. The combination of these three supports are what allow him to escape captivity in Africa, overcome the deadly obstacles on the island, and finally leave the island itself. His physical prowess and combat skills are significantly less important to his journey than the message of trust and persistance that the decades he spends on the island convey. While this message might need tempering for the modern reader, it is also inspirational and important to read.If the potential reader is not used to the diction of the time, the book itself may take some patience and persistance. It pays off, in the end, and should be an excellent book for the young teenager (or the not-so-young grown-up) interested in stories of adventure. The child who reads and enjoys My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George would probably be a good potential audience for Robinson Crusoe. For a good life-at-sea duo, you might consider pairing it with Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana.

And this book gets me to thinking I could lose a few more pounds by doing what I like! As long as I don't keep walking to the taco shack on the way!Why do some authors of little books use so much space for their disclaimers and copyright pages? And please, don't congratulate me for downloading your book. The beginning story about the author's father walking five miles to school, sometimes chased by wolves in winter, way down by the Okefenokee swamp in Georgia -- I'm not sure I'd buy that. The author also speaks of her childhood in a small town in California. And more stories to demonstrate how we've lost the joy of walking in America. Then we have "a short primer on therapeautic walking." How to start, choose a goal, increase your rate of walking and distance over time, sprintwalking. Some helpful advice, although brief.Well, now! "Walking for Fun and Profit." The "magic effect" of diet and walking. Profit? Better health must be the "profit," not money or Twinkies. So start walking. This little booklet will give you some good hints. You can discover more details on the internet, many magazines and your library. Just don't spend more time researching than walking!

This information in this book provided tips for those who have a hard time starting a new lifestyle as well as those who hit the ground running when it comes to weight loss. I appreciate how he zeroed in on both. Great job.
