The Interpretation of Dreams is a book by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The book introduces Freud's theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex. Freud revised the book at least eight times and, in the third edition, added an extensive section which treated dream symbolism very literally, following the influence of Wilhelm Stekel. Freud said of this work, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." The initial print run of the book was very low — it took many years to sell out the first 600 copies. However, the work gained popularity as Freud did, and seven more editions were printed in his lifetime.

Version 1.0 of Modern Psychoanalysis By Herbert L Calhoun One thing many people seem to forget is that Sigmund Freud was first and foremost an exquisitely well-trained and careful scientist. I found this out the hard way, when I read and reviewed a book by an author named Jeffrey Masson, who attacked Freud's theories in his book "The Assault on Truth," but made the fatal mistake of appending Freud's original studies to the back of his book? One should never do that when the appendix is so much better than the book that is doing the attacking.After reading the appendix, which was the most meticulous research monogram I had ever read in my professional life. I simply forgot the Masson's critique and spent the rest of the book marveling at Freud' s magnificent research. It was such a fine specimen and model of research, that it soared well above any standards I had ever known before or since. So much for Masson's critique?The same holds for his Interpretation of Dreams. Although for sure it is just circumstantial evidence at best, there is such a preponderance of it, and it is done with such exquisite carefulness and integrity that anyone who reviews Freud's research on dreams comes away wishing they could do even a single piece of research in their life time half as well as the work he did on "Dreams."This book is a summary of that more detailed work carefully written here for the lay reader. There is so much here that readers tend to take away different messages from it, and all could be right. And in that regard, I am no different. There are several things that struck me as important about this book and about Freud's theory of dreams. Others may disagree entirely with my selection.First, without a doubt, it establishes the fact that dreams are not innocent. They show that there is a connection between what we do while we are awake and what we do while we are sleeping. And in that regard, they tell us a lot of unpleasant things about how our psychological selves and our biological selves interact. One of those things is that we live constantly in a world of self-deception that requires suppression and then unraveling, even if the unraveling is only done "offline," while we are asleep.Another thing that it tells us is that dreams are purposeful. They are crude imaginary attempts at wish fulfillment, whether or not the wish is conscious or unconscious. It is thus a way of resolving real-world disputes on the imaginary playing field and offline without a live adversary to boot. The third thing that they tell us is that dreams operate according to a symbolic language that purposefully hits our consciousness obliquely as if at a glancing blow, thus reducing the shock at the same time that it requires decoding.Fourth, and most important in my view, is that dreams tell us that sexual desires play an enormous role in our unconscious mind. To a very large extent Freud discovered that dreams were often filled with wish-full filling sexual content, sexual fantasies, unresolved sexual conflicts, and sexual conquests unattainable in the real world. And finally, dreams establish a direct connection between their content and sanity. This just further confirms the first fact that dreams are not innocent. However whether our minds are orderly and tidy, or disorderly and chaotic, dreams can be a window into what we are thinking, wishing for, feeling or fantasizing about.Taken together, I believe these (or a similar such subset of them), make up the very foundation of modern psychoanalysis. And while in recent years, Freud's Dream theory has been under heavy attack, as has been true of other of Freud's discoveries more generally, I must say this in defense of the great master: that his theories still provide the foundation and a road map to further discoveries in psychology and medicine, just as Newton's theories did in science. There is no shame in having Freud's theories uprooted and replaced by better theories. In fact, that is what the scientific method is all about. Twenty stars.
