House of Robots, by James Patterson, Chris Grabenstein

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Sammy Hayes-Rodriguez is subject to the most awful, most embarrassing thing ever: Egghead, his mother's brilliant but socially inept robot will be joining him in fifth grade. Instead of being thrilled by his robo-bro, Sammy is mortified as "E" tries to enhance school bus boarding safety, fact-checks the teachers, bear-hugs Sammy at inappropriate times, and even causes a fire. Listeners also meet Sammy's home-schooled sister Maddie, whose autoimmune disorder makes her susceptible to infection, and his "second best friend" Trip, who jealously acquires a robot of his own. Jack Patterson is an excellent narrator who deploys a variety of voices, including a distinctive one for E. The 75 short chapters (most between two and three minutes) are full of tween humor, funny robot descriptions, and multicultural and nontraditional characters (both human and robotic.) An included PDF file contains 165 of Juliana Neufeld's illustrations. VERDICT Suggested for purchase where listeners enjoy the "Diary of Wimpy Kid" and "Dork Diaries" series.—Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TX

By Bassocantor The main character in HOUSE OF ROBOTS is Sammy. He lives with his sister Maddie and their parents in a wacky house full of all kinds of crazy robots created by his scientist mother. For example, one ingenious robot is Mr. Moppenshine, who cleans the house. The artwork showing Mr. Moppenshine cleaning the house is really funny. There is a fantastic series of artwork in chapter 18, "A day in the life of Mr. Moppenshine!" It shows how this crazily efficient robot goes around cleaning things--even going so far as to stick his head in the toilet. At that point, Mr. Moppenshine remarks that he is grateful that he can't really smell anything.Sammy explains that his sister, Maddie, suffers from SCID, which stands for "Severe Combined Immunodeficiency." Sammy explains that this means Maddie has a lot of trouble fighting off any kind of infection. Maddie can hardly ever go out of the house, and basically she can't do much physical activity. The story begins as Sammy's mom insists that Sammy take her latest robotic invention, "E," to school for a "Take a Robot to School Day." Mom explains that it's a "big, super important experiment." (The reader does not really see what the experiment is until much later in the book.) Of course his robot gets into all kinds of mischief at school, including a gigantic food fight. I really like the funny artwork showing the robot in the food fight. E happily exclaims, "This is the best first day a robots ever had!"Well, After E's first day at school, his mom does some tinkering and makes some enhancements in the robot. Then she insists that Sammy take him to school again. There is some type of big experiment going on, but she won't tell Sami exactly what.Interrupting the experiment with E is a startling event. The robot is actually kidnapped, so to speak. E ends up as a heap of discarded parts. So Sammy's mom has to work to get him back together again. Mom explains that "E might be even more remarkable. Several of his apps have upgrades available."We learn more about E, and the mysterious experiment--somehow involving Maddie. Mom wistfully ponders, "If he fails, the consequences will be devastating. But if he can successfully function at your school and move up, advance through the grades..." Without giving away too much, E is indeed a big success. Not just for Sammy, but especially for Maddie, and the entire family. All in all, HOUSE OF ROBOTS is really a fun, winsome book, full of wondrous, crazy looking robots. There's a very helpful listing of the main characters in this book at the very beginning, "Welcome to my house of robots." On page 69 is a great illustration of a certain robot that looks an awful lot like the robot from the old TV series "Lost in space." The reader learns that this robot is the tutor called "Tootles." (I bet the younger readers won't understand why Tootles shouts, "Danger, Danger.")√ HOUSE OF ROBOTS is a delightful, easy read, supported by cute and funny illustrations. The author even contains a subtle moral to this story, which was a surprising, nice touch. Recommend!

It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get my son to read.... until he picked up this book! He loves it! We target 20-30 min a night, tonight (first night he picked it up) and I finally had to stop him a little over an hour later because we had to eat dinner. He's in sixth grade so it is a bit of an easy read but I don't care because he's reading!
