2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. entertaining read By MJ 4 StarsOrphaned, and with no real choice, Shiovra decides to follow her destiny and go with her aunt Réalta to Rúnda where she spends 10 years isolated from her family to train as the high priestess to protect her village, Tara. When the time comes for her to return to her home she finds herself hunted by the Milidha, a clan who are driven by vengeance and out for war. Not knowing who to trust Shiovra travels in order to seek allies and ends up finding comfort in the arms of the enemy along the way.Once I got used to the unusual names of the people and places I settled into the story quite easily. The characters are varied, they're heroic, flawed, brave, some were a combination of all traits, even Shiovra with her reaction to, and actions with Odhrán, was imperfect and that fact made each of them more believable and realistic. The story is steadily paced with the action happening at regular intervals and wasn't bogged down with `fill in info dumps' or metaphors!Melissa has a nice flow to her writing that makes for a comfortable read and her work is presented professionally with maps of both Éire and the village of Tara. These maps help with the visualisation of an unfamiliar setting, and give the reader a better understanding of the locale while the characters are travelling from one village to another. The book leaves us with unfinished business and it is clear there is more to come, I have enjoyed this story and look forward to the rest of the trilogy.Copy supplied for review

(Yes, I succumb to cover lust, don’t judge me.) Reading this was an exciting, fresh take on Celtic mythology and little geeky me was psyched every time I recognized a name or a reference, but I still mean to brush up on my Irish lore. The plot:I downloaded this when it was listed free for a month awhile back and there is a note in the back saying it is being reedited. For the most part, I think that there were a lot of places where transitions or sequences could have been handled more gracefully, but over all I enjoyed it. I finished this in a fairly short time and got my emotions tangled up over how it would end, so it must be good. There was a total of four sex scenes in here and I skipped over them for the most part. They weren’t that explicit, but I’m me and that’s that. The characters:Shiovra was a consistent character that was sympathetic and inspired concern. For the most part, I couldn’t help but shake the feeling that she was being used without knowing and it made me worry. She was strong without being overbearing, makes people take responsibility for their own actions, and has a dedication to duty that I haven’t been seeing much in characters lately. There is this one part a little after the 80% mark on my Kindle where Shiovra becomes lovers with He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named-For-Fear-Of-Spoilers that I didn’t really like. The fact that she had just finished tongue-lashing another person for doing the same thing and was betrothed to someone else aside, it felt to me like he pressured her into it. I also wish that the build up to that scene had been a little more…intense. There is this one warrior leader, Meara, who I wish we had seen more of. She’s a woman in ancient Ireland leading men into battle with a spear—tell me that’s not worth exploring? I would have liked a touch of backstory on her and a little explanation as to why she fights alongside the men and why her men follow her when that is clearly not a cultural norm. I hope there will be more of that in Betrayal.Odhrán was…complicated. I don’t know how to feel about his character. I loved his sarcastic comebacks to Daire and he was definitely intriguing, but I’m not sure whose side he’s on or what his ends are. I have this theory bouncing around in my head that would explain a whole lot, but I’m only 40% vested in its likelihood.I did like most of the characters, including the villains. No, especially the villains. Every story needs a good one (or two or three or four) and here we get the “dark lord” baddie as well as the “evil queens”—the ultimate package. This story has a lot of potential, but I would recommend waiting until the reedits are done. With a little polishing, it could be a spectacular piece.

Shiovra has trained as High Priestess for the village of Tara, a decision that has strained her relationship with the only family she has left. But Tara needs her--her people are at risk of being attacked from two different fronts, and early on Shiovra learns that she must marry the enemy in order to forge even a temporary hope of peace. To that end, a warrior from her betrothed's clan has come to Tara to watch over her and protect her, though there are hints that he has another, darker purpose as well. Can Shiovra navigate the politics and relationships to keep herself and her people safe? And what happens when she finds love where she shouldn't--in more ways than one?I enjoyed this read--it moved along at a good pace, and incorporated some fascinating historical information. The characters are well depicted and even when they're making awful choices (there was a moment when I went--no no NO! Don't do that!), you can still see how they got to it, you can understand it even if you want to shake them :) There's murder, deception, politics, magic and love in this story, and it's well worth the read.I don't normally read adult fantasy, so I feel beholden to mention to folks who know me that there were a number of sex scenes that required skipping over for me. That's just me.
