A picturesque children's book with strategies to lessen the effects of dementia By Valerie Caraotta Author and teacher Karen Tyrrell has produced another book that will help children and families cope with life's realities. This well illustrated picture book will present to children ages four through eight the dynamics surrounding those that experience dementia and strategies that children can use to help lessen the effects.Whether an adult is reading this to a child or not, they will enter young Harry's world and learn how he helps grandpa to better remember things. Elementary teachers will also find this a welcome resource for their classroom. As grandpa's condition declines, unable to play hide and seek anymore with Harry and becoming disoriented at the school for grandparents day, Harry incorporate strategies of written reminders, old photos, recapturing his favorite music and allowing him to do the things he most enjoys so that he can begin recording again and gain a better sense of well-being.This book will lessen the stress for children and turn a declining situation into a creative time of resolution. A Delightful Children's Book By alison Harry Helps Grandpa Remember is a darling book and a welcome addition to the shelves of teachers, counsellors, aged-care workers, and parents. Harry demonstrates empathy and resourcefulness in helping his beloved granddad when he shows the first signs of dementia.The story hit home, having had a relative (and beloved grandma to my kids) in this sad situation. How useful it would have been to have Harry's help back then as I helped my little girls navigate the slow loss of their fun-loving grandma!Harry Helps Grandpa Remember is full of hope and practical ideas--and your children will love the bright colours and cute illustrations. Three cheers for author Karen Tyrrell for making these big issues accessible to young children.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a terrific children's book By Belladonna This is a terrific children's book! I love how it helps to 'normalise' dementia. The book provides many opportunities for kids, parents and teachers to discuss mental health issues and share their own experiences within their families with one another. And I LOVE the bright, colourful illustrations by Aaron! Well done, Karen on another fantastic effort and especially for shining a light on mental health and bringing it into the mainstream.
