0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hated the book, but loved aspects of it By PaCymru I hope Mr. Hooker takes my advice and runs with it. This book appears to have not been edited by anyone. There are three distinct stories here, none of which equal a whole, satisfying story. The story of the young boys in North Wales is compelling on its own, with the story of the father, mother, etc. That should have been one book. The story of the air boat and the suspenseful voyage with Duce and all the FBI, etc was another separate book. Then the Earth Mother stuff . . .this was not thought out very well. Half of the time Mr. Hooker keeps adding characters, without really explaining who they are, how they came to be, and why they are in the story. It feels like he had another whole novel here about the Ansurian culture, but he didn't have time to explore it fully and kept throwing us little pieces of information with out connecting the dots in any meaningful way. I love North Wales, and love reading about stories set in that place. I love suspense novels which have Historical Fiction intertwined, and I absolutely love fantasy. Unfortunately this book cannot be put firmly in any of these categories because it doesn't know what it wants to be. I can tell that Mr. Hooker loves all these genres and was attempting to put them all into the same book, but I would suggest that he fire his current editor and hire someone who can give him direction. He has a real gift for description of places that he loves, and an incredible imagination for describing other realities, I wish him luck in future endeavors!

A boy’s mother abandons him and then his father leaves for America to make his fortune, and thus is little Jonathan sent to his grandparents in Wales. He meets his cousin William there and the two become firm friends. The adventures they get up are astounding, and the author’s brilliant descriptions of the Welsh countryside had me enthralled.However, the second part (when Jon and William are older) fell a little flat for me. It felt too much like lessons, although the tale of the Condor’s first flight across the Atlantic, told from Jon’s father’s point of view, was excellent, nail-biting stuff. While I absolutely agree with the author’s standpoint regarding the earth and love his take of the otherworld that exists to teach humankind the lessons we need to learn, it did not have the immediacy of action I would have preferred. The final battle set in the future, which Jon and William are pivotal in, could have been highlighted more, and needed more build up from the beginning of the novel.Still, an excellent read, and wonderfully imaginative. I hope there is more, for now the cousins are very aware of their destinies!

It will appeal to all who like adventure stories, and concerned about our future By Chris Spencer The opening sentence felt like Jane Austen. Then followed parallels of " Swallows and Amazons", with the glaciated mountains of Snowden replacing the glaciated Lake Windermere . This developed into echoes of "His Dark Materials" before exploiting recent history to underpin an adventure story. He uses his obvious command of the English language to produce vivid descriptions, while alluding to some of the greatest challenges facing us all. Once I got into this book I had to finish it. It is amazing value to less than $4!
