When Gerald gets a whiff of the pea-green concoction and sees flies buzzing around the bowl, he asks Piggie if it is supposed to smell that way. With the exaggerative flair Willems is known for, as Piggie sniffs, her hat pops off, eyes bulge, and her head turns from turquoise to orange before she answers "Yessssss!" Piggie is eager for her best friend to try the recipe, but Gerald emphatically refuses. Seeing that he has upset his friend, Gerald changes his mind. Willems successfully executes the tension in the tasting scene by using two pages to zoom in on Gerald's face as a dot of slop touches his tongue. Gerald turns four shades of bright colors before transforming into a yellow and purple polka-dotted elephant. As he begins to return to his normal gray self, Piggie asks if he liked it. Although Gerald confesses that he does not, he shares that he is glad he tried it, because that is what friends do for each other. Variance in text size and melodramatic facial expressions will help readers understand how the two pals feel throughout the story. Elephant and Piggie fans will enjoy the new twist of bright colors used in contrast against the signature gray and pink hues. We’ve been reading them since my oldest was 4, and she’s a third grader now. Over the years, we have amassed quite a collection of Elephant and Piggie books, and we are always excited when a new one comes out.I Really Like Slop begins with Piggie arriving with a big bowl of slop. She is very excited about her slop. She really wants Gerald to try the slop, but Gerald is hesitant because of the slop’s appearance and smell. Will Gerald try the slop? Will he like it?The illustrations are fairly Spartan. Gerald and Piggie appear against a plain white background. There is an emphasis on body language and facial expressions, so you can always tell how a character feels. Much of the comic relief in the story revolves around Gerald and Piggie’s reactions to the slop. I’m not sure what is in the slop, but it sure is potent!There is also an important lesson to be learned about trying new things. Many children are cautious about trying new things; I know that mine certainly are! I won’t say whether or not Gerald likes the slop, but he is very gracious about the entire experience.As with the other Elephant and Piggie stories, author Mo Willems uses simple language to tell the story. Gerald and Piggie communicate via voice bubbles, and the back-and-forth dialogue is surprisingly witty, considering that the vocabulary is limited. One of my daughters’ favorite things to do is to take turns reading Gerald and Piggie’s lines.I would absolutely recommend I Really Like Slop! The best part about the series is that they are all standalone titles, so you can start reading any of them. This is my favorite series of beginning reader books. Don’t forget to look for the Pigeon (another Willems creation) at the back of the book!

Piggie really likes slop because of course, she's a pig. Elephant is not so sure about slop but gives it a try so as not to hurt his friend's feelings. After turning a series of amusing sickly-looking colors and patterns, Elephant finally admits to Piggie that he does not really like slop. "But, I am glad I tried it," he says. "Because I really like you." This is enough for Piggie. And a satisfying end for readers. Because it's a reminder for readers of all ages that truth in friendship is important.And lest I forget to mention: this whole story, including its beautiful insight into friendship and human nature (or should I say elephant and piggie nature) is told in very simple words a beginning reader can read herself. Or with a reading buddy. The dialogue word bubbles lend themselves to reading aloud together with a child, each taking a character, and acting out the story until you end in fits of laughter. Way to make reading fun, Mo Willems!
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorites. By E. Ervin I have had a ton of fun and good times with Elephant and Piggie when I was an elementary school librarian. The children at school always asked for and loved Mo Willems' books. I do, too. Now I will be sharing this new one with my great-grandson. It is another 'tons of fun' book to share with little folks. I am already enjoying myself with this book. It makes me happy to think how pleased children will be with another Piggie and Elephant! Good stuff.
