Stephen Pembroke, the Marquess of Barronsfield, believes that where his love of beauty goes, death follows. Cursed to a loveless existence, and with his legacy at stake, Stephen makes a desperate proposal of marriage to Rosalind Schofield, his steward’s new ward - and the plainest girl he has ever met. Rosalind has spent a lifetime being overlooked for prettier faces. When she is singled out for her lack of beauty by the Marquess, she begins to doubt if she is deserving of the love she inwardly craves. When unusual things start happening around her, Rosalind can’t help but wonder if Lord Barronsfield or his curse are who and what they appear to be. When she openly challenges Stephen about the curse, he begins to doubt everything – and comes to realize that this apparently plain, ordinary woman is not as unremarkable as he believed. Strange things are happening in Barronsfield. As they move closer to the truth, Rosalind unwittingly finds herself in the sights of the real beast in Barronsfield, and Stephen must decide if his growing love for Rosalind will be his salvation or her doom.

About the Author I was born and raised in Nova Scotia, where I still live with my husband and two sons. I'm now grown up enough to admit that when I started my undergraduate degree in Medieval History, I was pretty darned sure the past was going to be just like the fantasy novels I loved to read. So much for that. Having got over that disappointment, I simply turned my attention to mythic stories, fairy tales and Jane Austen. After some encouraging words from my grade 10 English teacher (who I might have had a teeny crush on because he had an English accent and looked a bit like Sting) I started writing my first novel, a time travel fantasy, when I was 15. I moved on to half-hearted attempts at something more literary, then nearly gave up on the writing all together until one fine day in 2005 a co-worker put a romance novel in my hands and told me to "get over yourself". I did, and the rest, as they say, is history. Like many authors, I juggle a full time job, family life, and (perhaps not like many authors) an addiction to Lego video games. Because sometimes, when you've been toiling over a manuscript for while, the best way to blow off some steam is to save the galaxy/Middle Earth/Bricksville/Gotham by smashing lots of things into little tiny bricks.

The plot was somewhat absurd with an evil curse and magical dreams, but you knew this going in given the subtitle: “Not Your Average Fairy Tale.” It turns out to be your standard plot about an evil relative wanting the hero’s title with some magical dreams thrown in for fun. That being said, it was well written (a bit on that later) and kept my interest. The plot moved along nicely and the romance was believable and well paced. The characters, Stephen and Rosalind, were likeable. He was a bit thick but in a charming way and she was intelligent and sassy. Unlike other romance novels she never once gets stupid just to further the plot. That was refreshing. Now for some nitpicking. We’re told the hero’s name is Stephen Pembroke the Marquess of Pembroke and then several pages later he’s referred to as the Marquess of Barronsfield (which he remains for the rest of the book). At least he is a Marquess and not a Marquis. The author could use language that’s a bit more in a historical vein. At one point a gambler has “won a bunch of money”. At another time a character that is supposed to be charming and witty says, in polite company to a couple of young ladies, “I can be a terrible sod if I don’t get my way” and nobody blinks at this language. I’m sorry, sod? Does the author know what this word means? Also there were a couple non-sequitors in the dialogue between Stephen and Rosalind that had me re-reading paragraphs for continuity that just wasn’t there. As for the plot, while most of it made sense, I did have a serious problem with a development towards the end. Spoiler Alert: How can Stephen, who is 30 yrs old, have a secret sister (not half-sister), who is 16 yrs old, when his mother died when he was 10? We’re led to believe she was kept a secret due to the curse and provided for in Stephen’s father’s will, but earlier we were told that his father wasn’t even aware of the curse. Hmmm. Perhaps I misread this or it will be explained in a later book since this is the first book of a series. Those nitpicks aside, this was an enjoyable read.

By AnneLouise A heroine to root for and a hero to fall in love with. I loved the premise of this story and the author's writing drew me into the time period and the setting. I liked Michelle's Helliwell's take on Beauty and the Beast and it was fun to follow Stephen and Rosalind as they fell in love. Lots of great secondary characters and a "mystery" to solve kept me turning the pages. Can't wait to read more from this author.

By D Alward A great debut, and something a little different for lovers of historical romance who want a story that's fresh and unique! This story reads like Beauty and the Beast meets Pride and Prejudice with a tortured hero and an independent, smart heroine. I can't wait for the next installment!
