An Attempt that Falls Flat By Lexar I'll give it two stars because I appreciate all attempts at a "Beauty and the Beast" retelling, but one star might be more appropriate. The thought and potential are there, but the execution left a lot to be desired.I (surprisingly) didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the spelling and grammar, so I don't have a lot to say about that. I know the one star review says that it's bad, but I don't recall anything too atrocious. As for the story itself, it felt like the synopsis of the actual story. I admit, I stopped reading at about halfway--when they part--but I did skim a few sections after that. Including cameos of other fairy tales was a mistake. I can't comment too much on it since that's part of the half I didn't read, but that's a lot going on for only one half of a not-very-long book. And, though I admit I wasn't reading too carefully at this point, I'm still unclear as to the purpose of all these cameos. Having multiple fairy tales represented makes sense in novels like Mercedes Lackey's "The Fairy Godmother" where the lead would be involved in multiple stories. Not sure why this Beauty isn't just sticking to her own. What made it feel like a synopsis instead of a story is that the characters were very one-dimensional, and there wasn't even an attempt in the first half to change that. Part of what makes "Beauty and the Beast" different from other fairy tales is that the protagonists are supposed to interact with each other and actually fall in love over time (with exceptions that do still have an extended time frame). But if there were any meaningful interactions between the leads in this novel, then it was clearly off-screen, which is a serious flaw. That basically destroyed all of the other parts of the story--I wasn't interested in the characters, so I wasn't interested in anything else. Everything was flat, stereotypical, and quite frankly, boring. With a lot of revising and editing, maybe the novel could work. As it is now, I'm afraid that it doesn't.
