Nicholas Copernicus Dent is having a rotten week. In a cookie-cutter town where nothing out of the ordinary happens, he's struggled his entire life to fit in. It's not easy with a quirky, biologist mom who looks like she's peered in a few too many microscopes. Add to that an obnoxious, brainiac sister whose idea of fun is camping out at the town library. Oh, and he's the only kid in class with a dead father. The last thing Nick wants is for people to think he's a freak. Too bad he's the weirdest kid on the planet. He's about to find out his body is full of billions of microscopic nanomachines, put there when he was born by his long-dead scientist father. Problem is, without the machines, Nick dies. Now, he must deal with foes desperate to seize his machines and use them in diabolical ways. With the help of newfound friends, Nick battles lethal robots, fends off an evil scientist who wants to turn him into a human lab rat, and searches for a mysterious device that is the key to his very survival - all before being exposed as the freakiest kid in town. Nicholas Dent and the Mysterious Machines is the first book in a series about a boy who wants more than anything to be normal, but in the end, realizes that being special isn't so bad after all.

About the Author R.E. Sulser's favorite word is pyroclastic. He loves exotic foods he cannot pronounce, the smell of gardenias, the flash of distant lightning, the taste of cilantro, page-turners, his daughters, science, and contemplating the whole darn thing. He hates baby powder, the smell of lavender, unrequited love, traffic, hot sand, inefficiency, and unsolvable problems. And if his body was filled with billions of tiny nanomachines, he certainly wouldn't tell you, so stop asking.

By JA Armstrong This book was geared towards Young Adults, but since I enjoy reading them, this was a no brainer for me. Our hero is Nicholas Dent who lives with his Mother and sister. His father dies shortly after he was born so he never knew him. Nicholas survived a mysterious illness that almost killed him right after he was born and wants nothing more to be average, normal and unnoticed in his life. However, his mother starts dating a researcher, he starts suffering from unexplainable fatigue and funny things start happening (like who sacked his room).Nicholas discovers some amazing and some horrifying things at the local Research Facility outside of town and in his Fathers 9until now unknown) storage Locker he finally stumble upon some answers for his questions.By the end of the novel you will be hanging onto each page, waiting to see if this fatigue will finally overcome him, Will Dr Sam or Dr Leach get a hold of him for who knows what experiments? What is hiding in the bowels of the Facility? And what are all those tiny things in his Cells? A very well written book full of courage, team work, angst and triumph. I would recommend this one to any of my teenage cousins.

I would describe the genre as a children’s/preteen science fiction. The story revolves around a boy named Nicholas Dent and his quest to NOT be the weirdest kid on the plant; which is not small feat since he just discovered that his body is full of millions of tiny nanomachines. And in addition to that (as if that’s not enough) there is also an evil scientist who wants to capture him for experimentation reasons. So instead of giving up, Nicholas stands tall and faces all that’s against him and goes on an epic search to find a mysterious machine that’s the key to everything, including his own survival!I think “Nicholas Dent and the Mysterious Machines” will really appeal to young readers. Sulser has created an engaging character and world along with a unique and entertaining plotline. I really liked Nicholas and was rooting for him to prevail against all the odds stacked against him. I look forward to reading more books by R.E. Sulser!

When we meet him, he is fresh off a humiliating experience at school. He has always felt different, but he isn’t sure why. He tries to hide in the shadows at the middle school he hates because he doesn’t want to be known for anything, especially coming from a family of scientists. After he starts looking through his late father’s belongings, we find out what his secret is and things start making sense. Other people figure out his secret too, with dangerous results. The ending is good and I can see many great things happening for Nick now that he knows what he truly is. This book is written for young readers, so it is easy to understand. It is the type of book that could get a child interested in reading, which is never a bad thing.
