From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—A girl runs away to the forest and eventually collapses in tears at the foot of a curvy tree. The tree asks the girl why she is crying, and she tells him that the other children in her village are mean to her despite her kindness. They mock her appearance, glasses, speech, and intelligence. In an effort to cheer her up, the tree tells her his own history. Once the other trees teased him for being different, but when loggers came to the forest, they cut down all of the other trees. Being different saved the curvy tree. He was lonely but eventually grew tall enough that he could see other curvy trees in distant forests. From his branches, the girl sees the other trees, and in each one there is a child like her. The tree teaches her that life will improve as she grows and looks outward. The digital artwork is romanticized, befitting the story's tone, but the message is a bit over-the-top and saccharine. VERDICT The well-intentioned story is held back by awkward phrasing and cloying illustrations.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

The perfect book for a kid who doesn't quite fit in By Hanah This story strikes a careful balance between celebrating what makes you unique and telling kids that they're not alone in the world just because they're different. The curvy tree survives because he's unique. The loggers don't cut him down because his wood isn't straight enough to build anything out of. But when he grows tall enough to see into other forests, he finds that he's not the only curvy tree in the world. The little girl, who feels alone and friendless in her village because she's different from the other kids, climbs the curvy tree's branches and sees that there are kids like her all over the place, waiting to be her friends. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the story is well told for a preschool child to understand. It's a wonderful addition to my kids' bookshelf, especially for my son who is a little bit different himself.

Brandon Dorman's illustrations nicely complement a sweet tale by Colfer about a little girl who feels different. The Curvy Tree is about celebrating your differences, but also realizing that you aren't alone.

It's an inspiring story for any child who feels a little different or left out. And the artwork is fantastic as always.
