Laing By Conan Laing was a great psychiatrist with fascinating ideas, but he gathered among himself too many madmen and fools, all of whom brought him down. Looked at in the context of psychiatry (not pop culture) Laing's ideas gather a more interesting context. The core idea - that it is the family that is dysfunctional and the individual a "symptom", loosely stated - is an important one. David Cooper's Death of the Family, calling for the destruction of the nuclear family, is probably the most extreme case of "Laing-ism." Sanity, Madness and the Family is Laing's most important book. I enjoyed this book tremendously, but it's price is way, way out of line.

By Dr. Ken Meyer Brilliant and highly relevant.Thank you for bringing us back in contact with the life and writings of R. D. Laing, a singular and radical visionary of existential truth whose writings expose the unhealthy foundations of our broken mental health system largely unchanged to this day. Fascinating to learn about the vicissitudes of the man behind the powerful message as well.I hope it can inspire a new generation of "healers" to move towards love and empathy versus labeling and separating.
