No matter how old she gets this series from Kate and M. Sarah Klise is still on her top 5 list. She has read and re-read all of them. From the moment we read the first one together (she was 8 yrs. old) and I explained the play on words she was hooked. What a joy these books have been. Please Kate and M. Sarah keep up the great work.

Times when a Hallmark just won’t do. Maybe you need a ghostwriter. Fortunately, the world’s most unusual family, residing at 43 Old Cemetery Road, are here to help. Our beloved Ignatius B. Grumply, his wife and ghostwriter Olive C. Spence and their son Seymour Hope have opened a sideline business, “Greetings from the Graveyard”: “Send one along when everything goes wrong”.Of course, nothing is ever easy for the trio. What with Iggy’s long lost ex-fiancé, Nadia S. Richenov, coming back into the picture and those two escaped cons, Robb Z. Lott and his wife Liza, on the loose. In times like these, you might be in need of a security system, and fortunately new Ghastly residents, Ben and Mia Bizzy are on the job. This installment’s cast of characters is rounded out by appraiser Art Smart, Olive’s former industrious if intrusive butler T. Leeves and the return of Iggy’s old publisher, Paige Turner. Demand for those cards is going to be high.As is standard for this series, we encounter more twists and turns than a Dan Brown book, all packed into about 160 pages of richly illustrated letters, newspapers, text message printouts and other assorted written communications. The Most Inspired Bit of Lunacy Launches a Greeting Card Company By FredTownWard Having absolutely loved the first five books in the 43 Old Cemetary Road series: Dying to Meet You, Over My Dead Body, Till Death Do Us Bark, The Phantom of the Post Office, and Hollywood, Dead Ahead, I had little doubt I would love this one, and I was not disappointed.As our story opens, the writing team (and family) of I. B. Grumply, Olive C. Spence, and Seymour Hope, residing in the old Spence Mansion at 43 Cemetery Road, Ghastly, IL, are confronting a problem not all that uncommon to the rich and famous: someone out of their past come forward to try to cash in on their success. In this case it is Nadia S. Richenov, the woman a young Iggy asked to marry him 21 years ago, whose proposal she "turned down like a bedspread". In the midst of writing Nadia a letter telling her off in no uncertain terms, Iggy is interrupted by Olive objecting to the rudeness of his letter. Iggy wishes there was a greeting card for occasions like this, and Olive is inspired to launch a greeting card company that writes and illustrates custom rhyming greeting cards for sticky situations not covered by standard greeting cards: "Greetings from the Graveyard".Meanwhile, a married couple of escaped convicts, Rob Z. Wonderful first counting book for young race fans By J.Prather Race Car Count is a wonderful counting book that will hold great appeal for young racing fans. Michael Slack takes that whimsical touch that gave Monkey Truck such charm and uses it to create a group of 10 race cars that are loaded with personality. His illustrations are filled with so much energy that this book just races by. In a book filled with wrecks, oil slicks, engine trouble, and loops, it's hard to take your eyes off the pictures long enough to worry about counting the cars.The text is spare, making this a perfect choice for toddlers as well as preschoolers. The rhyme rolls along without a hitch as its energy perfectly complements the illustrations. Each number is highlighted and over sized to aid in number recognition, and with the exception of the spread featuring car number 10, all cars are available for counting on each two page spread. The final two pages highlight all 10 cars lined up in a row and ready to race again, creating an excellent number line for some of the best counting practice to be found this side of the race track.It's not often you find such an effective counting book that is also a fun read aloud. Since this one does not feature the number word, and only counts up to 10 and not back down, this is best recommended for early counters and race fans of all ages.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and Kid-safe By Name Withheld We read the Iron Man book before it was in this boxed set. It combines Iron Man 1 and 2. The sex references, drinking and violence have been toned down to about a PG-rating so it's probably appropriate for most kids who have been allowed to watch the movies. I read it to a four year old, but in our house we're OK with heroes killing bad guys.I expect the others are similar but I'm using them as prizes for reading milestones so we haven't gotten to them yet.That said, the set is beautiful, and though the books are the size of paperbacks they have sturdy casewrap covers. If he hadn't already seen them I'd be using them for Christmas presents.

We were going to buy it at Barnes and Noble, but the price was a ton more than Amazon. Great books for early readers. The stories are excellent and challenging, but not too difficult. And the set is just really nice in general. We will holding on to these to pass down through all our kids.

127 of 129 people found the following review helpful. Not Just a Book for Women By Charles I told myself upon receiving this book that I would read it slowly, savoring it like a well-aged Port. Well, forget that idea. I guzzled this book like light beer. It was so, well, me. I believe one of the keys to really enjoying this type of literature is finding a deep connection to the author - that the author is someone who you think, "I could hang out with this person for an evening." Mid-way through this book I told my wife and a good friend. "Shauna is the female version of me."While I don't write half as eloquently as Shauna, I think I've shared her sentiments about food, hospitality and joie de vivre on multiple occasions - around tables, cooking with the guys in my cooking club or even, on occasion from the pulpit. So, I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you love food, hospitality, cooking, wine and just-for-the-fun-of-it dinner parties; if your idea of a great night is a house full of people and a whole afternoon spent cooking and smiling as you anticipate your guests; if you love having people in your home; if your idea of a good dinner is one that lasts several hours; if you love to give a good toast - to lock eyes with the people you love across a candlelit table and tell them why they're important to you; if you believe that everything is spiritual, and maybe especially food; if you love a well crafted sentence and rich metaphor, then this is your book.My only argument with this book is some of the early reviews I've seen. To quote one, "this is a wonderful book for women" For women? I'm not a woman, and I loved it. Why, in the Christian world must we keep perpetuating the notion that men write serious books about theology and leadership, while books about food and hospitality and sucking the marrow out of life are somehow "women's lit?" Or that the gift of hospitality is somehow a "woman's gift," and the serious gifts of leadership are for the guys. Yes, Shauna writes about motherhood, childbirth, and getting into her bathing suit come summertime. But, somehow, she does it in a way that I can connect to - after all, I'm married to a woman and I've heard her talk about all those things. And even if I were not, I'm still interested, there are still parallels to my life. While my shame issues aren't related to my "underbutt" (a term I've never heard before this book!) - I've got plenty of "swimsuit" issues in my life. And, there are plenty of us guys out there who love to throw a party - who care about candles, music, a well-set table and making a great soufflé, who love to employ our words, knife skills and ability to make a killer salsa, as gifts to the people we love. So, let's be done with this silliness. I don't think Shauna intends for hospitality to be a "women's issue," and you shouldn't either.

This book is filled with essays on food, family, friends, and faith. Her stories are about the everyday, yet each one has an insight into the significance that exists in each moment. Each essay turns into a little drama to tell. I liked how there was so much truth that existed here about the beauty of Christian community. It made me long for that kind of community in my own life and put into motion actions to make that happen. I also liked how she incorporated some thoughts on shame, which is reminiscent of Brene Brown's work. Most of the essays are connected with a recipe that Shauna loves and uses. The recipes included look delicious, interesting, and simple. I've already made the enchiladas last weekend, and they turned out to be a crowd pleaser.I wanted to love this book as much I loved _Bittersweet_, but I couldn't seem to do it. Her voice was hard for me to connect with. Shauna is living a more privileged and charmed life than 99.9% of the world. She has a supportive family and in-laws, spends entire summers on Lake Michigan, has the ability to travel with her kids around the world so that they can "learn," hosts dinner parties with place cards and menus, possesses the time to train for a marathon, and eats lots of crusty bread interwoven with the amazing conversations with laughter, tears, deep emotions in every other chapter. I am so happy that Shauna is loving her life and pursuing her passions, but I just can't relate to that Shauna. In fact, I think there is very few that can unless she is white, female, married, upper-middle class, suburban, and Christian.All the same, I did like the book, and I do like Shauna. My hopes is that she continues to grow in her writing style to be inclusive to other communities that may not include people just like her.

Abbreviated Profundity By Emily Heady There is much to enjoy about Shauna Niequist's bloggy book about the profundities of eating and drinking, and much of my enjoyment comes from my admiration for Niequist's honest--and sometimes quasi-confessional--approach to food. She eats cobbler for breakfast. She discusses the tangled relationship between food and shame in a way that's both sympathetic and sensible; "I feel this pain, and it's real, but I can deal with it."As when reading any book about food, I found that I left Niequist's book with a gnawing stomach. The recipes, mmm. The menu pairings, mmm-ier.At the same time, I also found myself not particularly hungry for the sort of thing that Niequist wants most to render attractive--the fellowship that she asserts comes with eating and drinking well with friends. Perhaps it's me--introverted me--but reading about dinner party after dinner party left me, though ready and primed for a fine meal, weary from the thought of so many people and so much talk. Food for Niequist is sacramental in both symbolic resonance and function--and this is a truth upon which she's right to insist. Yet I found myself wondering: could food be as functionally sacramental if it weren't so lush as it consistently is through this series of essays? Could a scrambled egg and toast, shared with an old friend over a glass of milk, serve the same function that the bacon-wrapped figs and ever flowing wine do? Could equally beautiful moments be made on a George Foreman grill in a college dorm room, or must Wusthof knives and Le Creuset cookware be involved in the preparation for it to be valuable? In short, how beautiful must the food be for the food experience to be beautiful as well?What I would ask for here is not a different book--for Niequist is who she is, and she likes a big, noisy dinner party--but rather some consideration of what additional meanings feasting might have in the context of the larger arguments Niequist makes. The Gospel's persistent return to metaphors of feasting and banquets is compelling; and so also is its insistence on the quiet companionship of inner circles (Jesus sharing a last meal with those whom He loved), and on the need to attend to the value of the widow's mite over and above the gifts the privileged can offer.I wonder as well about what might have happened had this book been slightly less abbreviated in its form; it is a series of very short essays that generally manage to reframe what seems to be an insoluble problem as an invitation to profound reflection in just a few pages. Elaborate meals take time. So also--at least for me--does arriving a epiphanic moments of being. And often elaborate meals are simply that: elaborate meals. Mmm, mmm, good--but not necessarily memorable or life-changing.Perhaps, though, one can train oneself to find the profound and beautiful in the same one that one trains oneself to chop celery. Perhaps it is less a matter of fine food and wine and abundant witty friends and more a matter of the way one approaches the table.

About the Author Don Rosenthal is an intrepid traveler on the road to enlightenment. Trained in psychotherapy at the Tomales Institution, Don counsels couples and individuals privately, using psychotherapy as a means of spiritual inquiry. Along with his wife Martha, Don is co-author of the book “Learning To Love - From Conflict to Lasting Harmony.” As a couple, they lead retreats and workshops in the US and abroad, teaching the art of intimate relationship as spiritual practice. Don and Martha live on a 600 acre land co-op in rural Vermont.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Clear, Masterful, & Compelling By K. H Shames This is my all-time favorite book. Need I say more? O.K., let me try to tell you why. The TOPIC (self-knowledge, self-mastery, self-compassion) seems akin to the very meaning of life, and something that has been oddly elusive over the years. The CONTENT, i.e. Don's ideas, seems to speak directly and personally to me, like an friendly cell phone call right from my higher power. But mainly it's the WRITING. Every sentence, every paragraph seems like a pearl of wisdom that should be on a wall poster with a beautiful picture. This is the kind of book where people like me who underline their favorite parts found myself underlining most of every page. I very much appreciate such quality prose, for in addition to being a doctor, I am also a book author. Clear, compelling, and delicious writing like this is (I can assure you) the result of enormous focus, caring, diligence, and love. Basically, this quality of expression is a gift to us. I can only compare it to my previous favorite writer, Sinclair Lewis, and he was a Nobel Prize winner. But now let me lastly consider USEFULNESS. One measure of a book is if it changes one's life for the better. This one certainly has done that for me. It has delightfully increased my happiness and peace of mind. How could one small book be so useful? Well, for instance, take the innocent-looking chapter called "Relationship." Somewhere mid-chapter Don says, "A blessing awaits me when I allow that my partner has something important to teach me. When I bless and honor my partner with all my being...I will reap nothing but grace." Sounded simple enough, so I decided to try it for a while. Wowie-Zowie! Just that one suggestion, and now my wife and I are enjoying our marriage more than ever. Thank you, Don Rosenthal. And there's like a zillion suggestions of that caliber tucked into every corner of this remarkable volume. I truly hope I have been able to give you a flavor of what could be in store for you. Cotton The Uncharted Journey is quite simply one of those rare and wondrous books with the power to change lives. Don Rosenthal is a profoundly courageous truth seeker, and wise and humble truth teller. His words are a transmission, bypassing the ego and speaking directly to the heart and soul.I have ADHD. This makes it virtually impossible for me to finish almost any "self-help" book. Most have a point, or a point per chapter, and reiterate it throughout. In contrast, The Uncharted Journey is packed with a dazzling array of exquisitely crafted points, one after another, threaded together like a finely woven tapestry. Reading it is a gentle, pragmatic, heart and eye-opening experience. Only a handful of books can change your life. THIS ONE CAN! Buy it for yourself and for your treasured friends.

I bought copies to give to everyone I care about By Beau (Tom) Weaver The Uncharted Journey is an astonishingly candid report from the front lines of what feels like a inner battle that I instantly recognized as my own. That is, the conflict between how I say I want to change my attitudes and behavior, and why I continue to persist in those unproductive ways of being. Don is a master of the confrontation with the ego. Right away, I began underlining passages to go back to, but quickly gave up, as almost every sentence was underlined.Don does not start with a philosophy, or present some new belief system, other than skepticism about what his own inner dialog insists is true. Don shares his own insights from his own life. These are battles hard fought by someone who has spend many years relentlessly examining himself.Don came to the same conclusion as the founders of the twelve step recovery process; that the root problems of the human condition are fear and resentment. And over many years, he has dug deep into his own failures to change, finding in those failures the signposts that point to a way to actually experience freedom. This is invaluable material for people in recovery who are ready to dig deeper in their inventory process. But it is not a "recovery book," unless the "recovery" we seek is the ability to live without being stopped from living with loving, open hearts.But this is not a touchy-feely book. This is more like martial arts training. It takes a lot of courage to honestly report on the posturing of one's own ego, in such a way that others are able to see themselves, and not judge themselves. Awareness without judgement is the way one can finally begin to experience some success in transmuting ego defenses into love and freedom.I am convinced this book will endure as a classic for those who are compelled to do the difficult inner work Don describes. I have purchased about a dozen copies for friends and family.Don and his wife Martha do small workshops for couples at their home in rural Vermont, and sometimes other places. If you ever get a chance to sit at the feet of this master, do it.I cannot recommend The Uncharted Journey highly enough. If you are ready.Thanks, Don.Beau Weaver
