Even though my brother and I had decided to stay away from the magic mirror, our puppy had other plans -- he bounded right in. What choice did we have but to go in after him? When we land in a winter wonderland, we realize we must be in the story of The Snow Queen. And this fairy tale is nothing like the movie. This Snow Queen is super-mean, and she turns our dog into an ice sculpture! To get home we'll have to: - Defrost our furry friend- Ride a very chatty reindeer- Learn to ice-skate- Escape from a band of robbersAnd if we're not careful . . . we could end up frozen ourselves!

She read it within 2 days, so I guess it was a good one! She was excited to learn more about the fairytale of The Snow Queen, which the movie Frozen was loosely based on.

Since reading the Land of Stories, I've been a longtime fairy tale fan, and I was all in for this series! At first, while reading, I had my doubts, since you have to adjust to the more... childish (for sake of a better term) writing, but it never got to the point where it was too ridiculous. As always, the characters were just beyond memorable and charming- Ralph, Jonah... ok, all of them!- with hilarious comments and scenes. Sarah Mlysnowski is very clever with her jokes, too- they're not obvious or anything- and really makes good use of her ability to write perfectly from a child's POV. The thing I especially loved about Cold as Ice was how Ms. Mlysnowski really incorporated the actual fairy tale- the Snow Queen- into the story very nicely. It didn't seem forced, or as if she had "rewritten" the Snow Queen, but rather, fit in quite nicely with the rest of the story. One more thing that just really stuck with me was how Ms. Mlysnowski brings out valuable life lessons into the story. For example, Abby's friend Robin wants to have more friends, and Abby gets mad, but then later learns how it's ok to have more than one friends. She invites Robin back to play with them, and they all learn something so important: friendship. This just boosts my opinion that every young girl- maybe some boys, too- should read Ms. Mlysnowski's Whatever After series for the fun, the cute characters, the laughs, and the valuable life lessons. Recommend to ALL that are ok having a little bit of fun with a children's story!
