This person also knows the one girl who can prevent an unspeakable and imminent catastrophe from taking place. But will she? When Caitlin Fletcher's mom disappeared (or left?) four years ago, Caitlin began suffering from breathless bouts of anxiety. Her new move to London, with her Dad and her brainiac sister, threatens to lead to more situations that will trigger panic. Now, she's having anxiety over the possibility of having anxiety! Caitlin's life takes a turn for the bizarre when she's tricked into climbing down a "rabbit hole", landing in a wondrous fairy tale universe - except it's crawling with savage, starving blood-eyed zombies. By Tina Lynn Himelstein I really love how fairytales are mixed into zombie horror and realism from our world, and the way that it's told really has a way of sucking the reader down into the rabbit hole. I can't wait to read more as the novels come out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Deadpan Zombie-Lite Fantasy/Adventure for Middle Graders By Pop Bop This book has a very appealing sensibility and the story is told with a dry, witty and engaging good humor. The start was mixed and not auspicious. In the prologue we learn that fairy tale and fantasy authors have been rising from their graves. This is noted with just a light touch of mockery, and bodes well. But then we zero in on our heroine, Caitlin, who is having a hyperventilating melt-down over an upcoming school dance. The narrative becomes frantic and disjointed and very high school draaammmatic, and I despaired, because I wasn't going to be able to take a few hundred pages of this sort of phobic heroine. Well, fret not. This "hot" introduction to Caitlin is mostly there for laughs and sympathy, and the narrative settles down quickly. What we move on to is one of the most fun sets of siblings that I've seen in a while. Caitlin is a bit dramatic and predictable and anxious around the edges. But her younger braniac sister, Natalie, is as gimlet eyed, sassy and unflappable as they come. Between the two of them, who engage in actually very clever banter while covering each others' backs, we get an appealing and well rounded team. I wouldn't be surprised if most readers didn't favor spirited Natalie a bit, which is fine.NO SPOILERS HERE, EXCEPT to say that the plot turns on a mashup of "Alice in Wonderland", popular fairy tale characters, the zombie canon, and high school drama, with the obligatory end-of-the-world twist. But of course you don't really read this for the plot, entertaining as that might be. You read it for Caitlin and Natalie, the supporting characters, the reimagined Zombie Disney Princesses, the Wonderland angle, and some of the more memorable set pieces and action scenes. (There's a touch of budding romance, but just a touch.)Once the book gets up and running, (which happens fairly quickly after some high school mean girl stuff), the pace is fast and furious. This isn't one of those tales that just has an idea or two stretched out to book length. It isn't a one-note zombiefied parody of a single classic book. It's an original; there are twists and turns galore and a new and engaging character every few pages. And all of this is held together with a light but sure touch on the author's part. Sometimes the narrative is a bit loosey-goosey and slangy, but given the characters and the intended readership that isn't very jarring and actually makes Caitlin and Natalie feel a bit more authentic. The upshot is that even if you might be suffering from a bit of zombie overload this book has a lot more than just that going for it, and is an interesting and engaging addition to the shelf. A happy find.(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
