0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A general overview of how to get and stay motivated. By Rob Natiuk You'll have a pleasant little "chat" from this author about motivation and your weight-loss plans. She covers the main features of a successful diet regimen--setting realistic goals, enjoying your program, exercise, patience and positive thinking. What motivates you? she asks. A positive mental attitude. How do you get that? Well, that part is a bit skimpy. The "proven strategies and simple steps to remain motivated" are not covered in much depth.I appreciate that the author emphasizes that you should "focus on your health and create sensible eating strategies." But you'll find those elsewhere, perhaps in her other books or the newsletter she offers you. Keep in mind that the specific suggestions she offers might not be what motivate you. Perhaps you don't need extraneous rewards as she mentions: "...you must make an effort to reward yourself for each milestone reached." For some of us reaching that milestone IS THE REWARD! Nor do all of us need a group to share our successes with.Basically, this book is an easy overview of the motivation factors in weight loss. The author avoids most of the current misconceptions. But here's one she doesn't: "...one serving of Brussels sprouts has 50 calories, but the body needs 75 calories to digest them." That's a fallacy that has been proven wrong. There is no natural food that contains fewer calories than your body needs to metabolize it. However, there are thermogenic foods that help to speed up calorie-burn. But the author doesn't get into those.I don't know if this author has any real experience in helping others diet successfully. When she compares "your body to a DVD player," she lost me there. A person with enough experience in a certain field usually has illustrations from that field that work.Well, I don't mean to be negative, and this book could help you get motivated in a general way so you'll explore the subject further. Again, perhaps her newsletter will be a great help.

Discover how Jack Frost keeps the hearts of children happy in the third picture book in Academy Award winner William Joyce’s New York Times bestselling and “dazzlingly inventive” (Publishers Weekly) The Guardians of Childhood series. Before Jack Frost was Jack Frost, he was Nightlight, the most trusted and valiant companion of Mim, the Man in the Moon. But when Pitch destroys Mim’s world, he nearly destroys Nightlight too, sending him plunging to Earth where, like Peter Pan, he is destined to remain forever a boy, frozen in time. And while Nightlight has fun sailing icy winds and surfing clouds, he is also lonely without his friend Mim. To keep the cold in his heart from taking over, he spreads it to the landscapes around him and earns a new name: Jack Overland Frost. But a true friend always comes through, and on one particularly bleak night, Mim shines down and shows Jack a group of children in great peril. Through helping them, Jack finds the warmth he’s been yearning for, and realizes bringing joy to others can melt his own chill. It is this realization—that there will always be children who need moments of bravery, who need rosy cheeks, who need to build snowmen, and who are then eager for a spring day—that makes Jack realize why he is a forever boy, and worthy of becoming a Guardian of Childhood.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. William Joyce's JACK FROST is my all time favorite one! By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews William Joyce has once again captured the wonder of childhood with Jack Frost's story. Told in the same fashion, and given the same visually stunning, old-fashioned illustrations, the story of Jack Frost is as mesmerizing as the first two books in The Guardians of Childhood series, The Man In The Moon, and The Sandman. The long awaited arrival of this book's release lives up to all that I had hoped it would be and more.I've long been a fan of William Joyce's The Guardian's of Childhood series. These books are some of our all time favorite children's picture books. Not only are the illustrations visually stunning, the stories themselves are captivating for readers of all ages. The stories are about guardians who's job is to keep safe the merriment of childhood. Protecting their hopes, their dreams, and their hearts. These valiant Guardians offer hope, and courage, as they keep children safe from darkness of Pitch.Jack Frost's story is one I've always been fascinated with. Learning about Jack Frost's origins, and his history with the Man In The Moon is something I absolutely loved reading about. Jack Frost's story is one of courage, and valor. I have always admired his character, but do so even more, now that I know more about him. The story about Jack Frost is about who Jack was before he became Jack Frost, how he became Jack Frost, and what he does now, as a Guardian of Childhood. I imagine that if you already didn't love Jack Frost, you will after you read his story. This book is one of my all time favorite children's books. Jack Frost is definitely my favorite out of the Guardians of Childhood series. That is saying a lot, considering I loved the previous two books in the series. If you have not yet done so, I highly recommend picking up the series. If you've already read the first two books in the series, than I definitely recommend picking up Jack Frost's book.To William Joyce, thank you for brining Jack Frost's story to life!

I can't tell you how much my son loves these books, man in the moon is his favorite still, but we read this tonight because he was so excited when it came in the mail. He actually wanted to go to bed tonight just to read it. He spent fifteen minutes after the story was over looking at the pictures and recounting the story to me as though I hadn't just read it to him (he's three)I live for these moments. And this book was amazingly beautiful (I love that nightlight is Jack)My son adores all of the Joyce books (fantastic flying books is another favorite of ours) and I'm planning on buying the series of Guardian books for the older age group so that we'll have those as well.

Shooting off from the movie's storyline a bit By Dione Basseri So, if you're a fan of the Rise of the Guardians movie, this is going to throw you a bit. The books and the movie, at this point, may need to be considered separate universes. Rather than Jack Frost being the spirit of a child who died saving his sister, he's sort of the second form of Nightlight, the protector of the Man in the Moon. But, if you ignore the connection to the movie and focus just on the quality of the book, it's...okay. The artwork in this series is phenomenal, full of little details and striking color choices. You could easily frame some of the pages for decoration in your child's room. However, the plot is a bit too complex for most children's books. I'm not entirely sure which market this is best suited to. Fans of the movies would be, as I said, disappointed. The book is way too text-heavy for young listeners and early readers. And the plot of the series is convoluted enough that those reading it just because it looks pretty might be disappointed. But, despite that issue, the book is still SO PRETTY that I think evening it out to a four-star is acceptable.

The plots were varied, although Nancy was always smart, assured, independent, fearless and successful. I envied her aplomb. These were the books which ignited my love for mysteries. Reading mysteries improves your reading as the suspense speeds your reading. I've always been a fast reader, thanks to Nancy Drew.

“One day. . . I went to school. I came home. The end,” says our storyteller—a girl with a busy imagination and a thirst for adventure. The art tells a fuller tale of calamity on the way to school and an unpredictably happy ending. The genius of this picture book is that each illustration captures multiple, unexpected, and funny storylines as the narrator tells her shorter-than-ever stories, ending with “One day. . . I wanted to write a book.” An original and incredibly deep combination of text and art invites readers to make up stories of their own.

Primary kids (K, !, 2) would see themselves in this story since they tend to write one sentence stories with "The End" after each one. Great mentor text for teachers trying to show students that elaboration is key when writing.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. One day... I read a picture book. It was great. The end. By E. R. Bird Last evening I was reading “Quest” by Aaron Becker to my daughter for bedtime. It’s a good book. I’ve read it approximately 20 times by now, so I should know. Anyway, we’re reading the book, which is wordless and requires that the reader really pay attention to the story, and as we start I point out to my daughter some feature at the beginning involving statues. Immediately she countered with a different statue detail at the back of the book that I, though having read this story over and over again, had completely and totally missed. That’s the cool thing about child readers. Not only do they find the details the adults are completely oblivious to, but on top of that they’re coming up with cool narratives and storylines of their own, on spinning off of the ones conceived of by the author/illustrators. So when I see a book like “One Day, The End” I just wanna put my hands together and applaud. Rebecca Kai Dotlich is a genius (and Fred Koehler ain’t sleeping on the job either). She figured out that for kids a story is just as much a product of the relationship between a child and a book’s pictures as it is between a child and a book’s words. Sometimes more. Sometimes much more. And sometimes they’ll be handed a book like this one that lets them examine and indulge to their heart’s delight.Do you know how to tell a story? It’s easy! Listen to a couple of these. “One day … I felt like stomping. Stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp stomp.” “One day… I lost my dog. I found him.” “One day… I ran away. I cam home.” A small girl tells her tales with a minimum of words. Yet hidden in these words, sometimes literally, are epic narratives. The most ordinary of actions can turn into huge adventures. By the end, the girl is writing whole books out of what could normally be seen as mundane everyday actions. Yet two sentences can yield a whole lot of action. These days the buzzword of the hour appears to be “visual storytelling” or “visual learning”. And why not? We live in a world of constant, perpetual, enticing screens (or “shiny rectangles” as my brother-in-law likes to call them). Graphic novels have achieved a level of respect and quality hitherto unknown in the history of publishing and I don’t think it’s a stretch to believe that there are more picture books being published today than ever before. Into this brave new world come the kids, their minds making connections and storylines. They mix reality and fantasy together with aplomb. They give their toys lives and thoughts and feelings. So to see a book that sets them free to give these imaginings a little form and structure? That’s great. On the most basic level, the book is perfect for class writing prompts. The teacher tells the kids to pick a two-sentence story in the book and expand upon it. It works to a certain extent, but I wonder if in some ways it sort of skips the point of the book itself. One of the many points of “One Day, The End” is that when it comes to picture books, storytelling can be more than simply whatever it is that the words say. Another point is that you don’t have to be loquacious to tell a story. Two sentences will do. It would be fun to do an exercise with kids where they tell two-sentence stories. Two sentences takes off a lot of pressure. There’s no need to include a rise and fall to the action. Anyone can tell a story (a valuable lesson). This book shows you how.All that aside, the ending of the book was particularly interesting to me. Picture book authors that can stick the landing (as it were) when they finish their stories are rare birds. Such books don’t necessarily come along every day. That said, the ending of “One Day, The End” is rather magnificent. The whole book until this point has been showing the reader that in the shortest of stories there can be whole epic narratives. So when our young heroine begins by saying “One Day… I wanted to Write a Book” the accompanying picture shows her at a typewriter (a retro move) imagining a whole host of new situations. Turn the page and the following “So I did” shows a line of thick books, each one with a title that relates to the tiny two sentence stories we witnessed before. The implication at work here for kids is that even in the briefest of moments of our lives, which adults might hurry through or remember in abbreviated ways, there are untold tales just waiting to be told. This book is for the five-year-old burgeoning writer. This character wanted to write a book and did. Who’s to say you couldn’t do the same?I didn’t recognize Fred Koehler’s style the first time I read through this book. Maybe this is a little more understandable when I mention that he only just debuted this year with his own picture book, “How to Cheer Up Dad”. That book starred affectionate pachyderms. This one, all too human humans. In order to bring Dotlich’s story to life, Koehler sets the action in a kind of timeless past. Cell phones computers, and even televisions are not in evidence. There’s one sequence when our heroine is playing hide-and-go-seek with her brother and we see a large swath of their home together. It’s rather technologically barren, a fact drilled home later when the typewriter makes its somewhat inexplicable appearance. Fortunately, Koehler has a lot going for him, beyond this attempt at timelessness. The font of the story is practically a tale in and of itself, always shifting and changing to suit the described action. And the layouts! I don’t mind saying that part of the reason this book feels so fresh and interesting and fun has a lot to do with Koehler’s layouts. The words that make up the stories appear as part of the illustrated scenes, sometimes dominating the action and sometimes playing a role in it. For example, the story that begins with “One day… I wanted to be a spy” actually shows the girl peering between the letters of “spy”I also loved that Koehler wasn’t afraid to reward rereadings. Attentive readers will be able to witness the smaller sub-adventures of a cat, a squirrel, a bird, and a little white dog that appear in the periphery of all the action. Then there are even smaller details that you wouldn’t notice on a first glance. The story, “I went to school. I came home” shows our plucky young gal dilly-dallying on her way to class (following a cat that will come up again in a later tale) only to accidentally leave her books somewhere en route. She runs to her classroom, but sharp-eyed spotters will note her missing backpack. Next thing you know the class is following instructions on doing science experiments and she peers at her neighbor (every kid doing the experiments is looking at their book, save her), and accidentally pours her solution into the wrong beaker. And there are other details about the characters themselves that are worth discovering, like that our storyteller always wears mismatched socks. As for the callbacks, if you pay attention you’ll see that an element that appears in one story (like a rubber boot placed over a flower in the rain) may later crop up again later (that same flower grows out of the boot a little later). To sum up, why not take a page out of this book? One day… I read a picture book. It was great. The End.

Then he called for his 8-year-old brother: "Read this. It's not like other books. The middles are in the pictures, see?" They spent a long time enjoying the very last page, too, because they kept going back to see where the bookshelf titles came from. FUN!

It's a fun book with unique twists and I hope the next one in the series comes out sometime in the near future. Also, it provided a nice platform for some good questions from the kids. I could tell it was thought provoking for them.

Forehand I've ordered and read lots of books from Amazon over the years, yet this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to express my sheer satisfaction and pleasure in reading this book. The Warden Watch is one of those hidden treasures that will stand out as a great book not to be forgotten on a dusty book shelf as is the fate of so many other books. It starts out with action and intrigue, is chock-full of it in the middle, and finishes leaving you salivating for the next in the series (which, by the way, I hope is coming soon)! The author has done a fantastic job of not only creating rich and full characters, but in putting you in the middle of the story as if you were there to witness it all unfold. The protagonist is a very likable kid who is witty, intelligent, thoughtful, and is easy to identify with while you follow his adventures. The book has mystery, drama, fantasy, and some major events from the Bible that are intricately and beautifully woven into the story, and there are some great lessons and values to be learned within.Whether you're a kid, young adult, or even "mature", if you enjoy fiction and have even half an imagination, this book will captivate you and demand you keep turning the pages to the very end... and then you'll want more!

I have always been impressed with his writings, but there is something about this one that really grabbed me as a reader and kept me glued to the pages. Also I am looking forward to sharing this book with my children when they get a little older. This story may seem like a strange mash-up, it had Big Foot, Dracula, a young boy who gets caught in a great adventure, angels, demons, and the legacy of Jesus Christ. Casey is a young boy out exploring his back yard when he sees a shadow that does not make sense, using a bit of cunning, and a few ticks he has collected in his bag he ends up catching hold of a Big Foot, only to be whisked away into their realm. But even there things are not always as they appear. This story is tightly written. Casey is an interesting young hero and his Great Great Great … Aunt Myrtle has a story most would not believe. The pace was great and it ends with a killer cliff hanger ending.I do not know how many books Horvath has planned for this series but I can only hope it is a few because this one was a great read!

Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy, Fifth EditionFrom The Guilford Press

Review "Reading the fifth edition of this classic work left me struck by the astonishing progress in the field. Clinical and scientific advances abound in these pages. The chapter authors are the best clinicians and researchers we have. Their original voices come through within a common organizational frame that allows easy comparison across models and topics. The addition of chapters on PTSD, interpersonal neurobiology, and intercultural relationships is particularly noteworthy. This book is straightforward enough for students and beginners and sophisticated enough for senior therapists who want an update on one of the most exciting areas in contemporary psychotherapy."--William J. Doherty, PhD, Couple and Family Therapy Program, University of Minnesota "Truly a tour de force. With thoughtfully crafted chapters by prominent couple therapists who represent the diverse range of theoretical perspectives, this fifth edition offers both empirical support and practical clinical advice. The volume addresses the many changes in the field, highlights up-to-date research findings, and links them to interventions. This book is a 'must read' for anyone learning how to practice couple therapy, as well as for seasoned couple therapists from any theoretical orientation who are committed to practicing state-of-the-art interventions. Readers will find the book to be brilliantly written and clinically illuminating."--Nadine J. Kaslow, PhD, ABPP, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine; past president (2014), American Psychological Association "Once again, the Handbook rises to the challenge of being the definitive guide to couple treatments, with encyclopedic coverage of different therapeutic approaches, populations, and targeted problems. The fifth edition includes exciting chapters on novel couple therapies for PTSD and intimate partner violence, new tips for working with stepfamilies, and 'news from neuroscience' for the couple therapy field. As in prior editions, the integration of research findings, techniques, and detailed clinical examples facilitates understanding for clinicians at all levels."--Brian D. Doss, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Miami "Remarkable in its breadth and depth. This handbook is a fitting tribute to the late Alan S. Gurman's legacy as the quintessential historian and interpreter of couple therapy. No student or practitioner could consider him or herself informed without a knowledge of these chapters, which are written by a veritable 'who's who' of the discipline. These pages reveal and honor both the diversity among approaches and the striking similarities among core mechanisms of change. If I were to choose one book to anchor my professional library for the next 5 years, this would be it!"--Douglas H. Sprenkle, PhD, Doctoral Program in Marriage and Family Therapy (Emeritus), Purdue University "The most comprehensive, well-respected source on how to do therapy with couples. A benefit of the fifth edition is the historical view that the contributors provide; many have been leaders in couple therapy for over 20 years. The book also incorporates the latest developments, such as interpersonal neurobiology. At the University of San Diego, we have used this book for many years as our core text for the Couple Therapy class, and we will enthusiastically incorporate the fifth edition into our curriculum."--Jo Ellen Patterson, PhD, Marital and Family Therapy Program, University of San Diego"I purchased my first copy of the Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy at the beginning of my third year of graduate school, and I’ve owned a copy ever since. The fifth edition, published in 2015, provides readers with a map of the evolving field of couple therapy. Like older versions, the fifth edition highlights the major approaches to couple therapy, and serves as a handbook for both new and experienced clinicians….The Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy offers novices and seasoned clinicians a fine reference book to guide them whether they are interested in learning about a specific approach to couple therapy, or about how to think about or treat a specific issue. The book will always have a place on my clinical book shelf." (The Family Psychologist 2016-05-01)"Considered to be the authoritative reference in the field of couple therapy….Once again, the editors successfully manage to bring together renowned authors to write chapters about the most used models as well as integrate new developments in the field of couple therapy--much needed additions….This is appropriate for students in the field of couple and family therapy, as well as skilled practitioners….This update does not disappoint in quality or depth. It makes the same excellent contribution in presenting the models as previous editions and it also provides a thorough look at newer and much needed developments in the field.” (Doody's Review Service 2016-02-22)"Clearly the definitive reference book in this field....Psychiatrists of any persuasion will find an abundance of valuable pearls." (on the fourth edition) (Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2009-10-10)"The book is exactly what therapists interested in couple therapy should read as they embark on a career in the field....This text is ideally suited as an introduction to couple therapy for students....A must for any couples therapist's library." (on the fourth edition) (Journal of Marital and Family Therapy 2010-01-01)

Ebook PDF Online Divided Spirits: Tequila, Mezcal, and the Politics of Production (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Sarah Bowen

Divided Spirits tells the stories of tequila and mezcal, two of Mexico’s most iconic products. In doing so, the book illustrates how neoliberalism influences the production, branding, and regulation of local foods and drinks. It also challenges the strategy of relying on “alternative” markets to protect food cultures and rural livelihoods. In recent years, as consumers increasingly demand to connect with the people and places that produce their food, the concept of terroir—the taste of place—has become more and more prominent. Tequila and mezcal are both protected by denominations of origin (DOs), legal designations that aim to guarantee a product’s authenticity based on its link to terroir. Advocates argue that the DOs expand market opportunities, protect cultural heritage, and ensure the reputation of Mexico’s national spirits. Yet this book shows how the institutions that are supposed to guard “the legacy of all Mexicans” often fail those who are most in need of protection: the small producers, agave farmers, and other workers who have been making tequila and mezcal for generations. The consequences—for the quality and taste of tequila and mezcal, and for communities throughout Mexico—are stark.Divided Spirits suggests that we must move beyond market-based models if we want to safeguard local products and the people who make them. Instead, we need systems of production, consumption, and oversight that are more democratic, more inclusive, and more participatory. Lasting change is unlikely without the involvement of the state and a sustained commitment to addressing inequality and supporting rural development.

Divided Spirits: Tequila, Mezcal, and the Politics of Production (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Sarah Bowen

Review "There is not much published about the two iconic Mexican spirits, except for consumer books and tasting guides to different brands. Bowen's perspective is fresh and thought-provoking."--Fabio Parasecoli"The Huffington Post" (10/19/2015)"Engaging . . . A top gift book for the beverage drinker."--Dean Tudor"Gothic Epicures VinCuisine" (12/15/2015)

From the Inside Flap "Sarah Bowen’s book is meticulously researched and delivers an important message about the limits of market mechanisms to reform the food system and deliver economic justice. Accessible to the casual reader as well as the seasoned food scholar, this work sets the bar for high-quality food scholarship." —Josée Johnston, author of Foodies: Democracy and Distinction in the Gourmet Foodscape "Sarah Bowen’s investigation of tequila and mezcal production in contemporary Mexico is masterful. She evocatively lays out the perils and possibilities of 'glocalization' as a strategy for protecting people, food, and drinks with a clear-eyed examination of the consequences of instituting denominations of origin and quality standards for tequila and mezcal. Although growing agave and making tequila and mezcal remain important for Mexicans, Bowen neither romanticizes nor dismisses the contradictions that emerge when agrarian and cultural ideals confront the complex power dynamics of a global political economic system. Divided Spirits reveals the continued need to protect agrarian livelihoods, artisan food and drink, and cultural and biological diversity. Retaining control over whom and what determines quality is Bowen’s important and innovative call to arms, and we all should listen. Everyone must be involved in this fight—from small agave farmers in Oaxaca to bureaucrats in Mexico City to urban hipsters drinking smoky mezcal in a bar." —Amy Trubek, University of Vermont

About the Author Sarah Bowen is Associate Professor of Sociology at North Carolina State University.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Divided Spirits Delivers On Its Promise By John McEvoy Divided Spirits delivers on its promise: it is an in-depth look at the history, practices, and politics of tequila and mezcal production. As the author is a professor, this is largely an academic take with extensive and deep research over a ten year period. The author has interviewed many participants in the supply chain of agave spirits from the farmers to the producers to the retailers and bartenders.Among many things she goes into detail on denominations of origin (DO), what they mean, and what their potential value is. Then she dives into the history of mezcal and later tequila (which is a mezcal as many know). The sections on tequila are pretty much a take down of the big industrial tequila producers - how they abuse the farmers who grow the agave and exploit the DO to the point that it has really detached from its original intention. The interviews with the farmers and laborers gets a bit lengthy and tedious and her points could be made more succinctly, but it reflects an extensive amount of knowledge and she has a lot to communicate.Having written a book on mezcal, I really enjoyed the mezcal section (surprise!) and it all rings true to me. She does a great job discussing the mezcal DO and the associated issues, including agave sustainability, the profound historical culture of mezcal, the economic issues for producers, the appalling attempts to change the DO in favor of the industrial producers, and many more things.About the only thing I did not like is her ongoing reluctance to give the reader obvious information that you are inclined to ask as you are reading the book. For example, she has numerous quotes from the "artist" founder of Del Maguey, but fails to name him (it is Ron Cooper!). Why not tell us? Or she will give you someone's name and say he is "an owner of a high-end tequila brand", but does not tell me which brand? She talks about an agave spirits cocktail bar in NYC's East Village that was named cocktail bar of the year, but she does not give you the name of the bar (it's Mayahuel). There are numerous other examples of this style. Why Sarah, why??? I don't get it.While those issues frustrated me, it did not bring down my overall experience. It is well written, well researched, has a pointed perspective, and full of information. I enjoyed it.

Parkinson’s as a Spiritual Journey is a collection of personal stories that describe how the author has found meaning, instead of victimization, in Parkinson’s disease. In writing the book, he has also discovered forgiveness and developed compassion for those in his past who have caused him pain. This is a practical book about personal and spiritual healing; it is not a book of miracles. The writer uses a unique format to tell his stories. Each of the 12 chapters has its own epilogue describing how the story relates to his dealing with Parkinson’s. Even with a diagnosis of a chronic, life-changing health issue, he demonstrates how it is possible to live a more worthwhile and enjoyable life with adversity. This is not a do-it-yourself book. The author explains how he has incorporated a number of healing modalities in dealing with Parkinson’s. His “team” includes a spiritual director, an acupuncturist-counselor, a neurologist, a chiropractor, a massage and energy-work therapist, and his own creative writing. The readers of Parkinson’s as a Spiritual Journey will find themselves alternately laughing and crying. In the words of the author, “I wrote these stories with the purpose of writing enjoyable stories. Somewhere along the way, a sense of forgiveness for some past hurts began to take place inside. When I noticed a slight reduction in trembling, along with a stronger sense of well-being, I began to look at Parkinson’s in a different light. The disease became less of an enemy to fight and more of an opportunity to heal myself in other ways.” There are there are over one million Parkinson’s sufferers in our country, with 50,000 to 60,000 new diagnoses annually. Science is doing much to deal with the disease and is making great strides. This unique book is the story of how one person has chosen to incorporate some new healing modalities into medicine; and it tells of how finding forgiveness and compassion within oneself can ease the tension, depression, and bitterness brought on by the diagnosis of a debilitating disease.

Mr. Reitz does a wonderful job of tying his disease in with the events in his life as he recounts the highs and lows that make up his personal drama and how our body reacts to those shimmering waves of emotion. It occurs to me that the message he brings to us is universal in its application. It’s all about forgiveness, isn’t it.I know from my own experiences, that when we're able to step back from the pain of our lives and be the Observer, it all starts to make sense somehow. And the beauty of it all sparkles like dew in the morning sun - soft and fragrant and refreshing. How wonderful for him and for all of us that he heard his yearning. This is a well written book that packs a punch with each story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will keep this one on my bookshelf!

A TIME Magazine Top 10 Children's Book of 2015!Ducks growing out of bananas? A mouse catching a cat? What’s wrong with this book from the creator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar?   Yes, there’s something strange, something funny and even downright preposterous on every page of this book. But it’s not a mistake – it’s nonsense! And it’s also surrealism. Nonsense lies at the heart of many beloved nursery rhymes. Children readily accept odd statements like “the cow jumped over the moon” and “the dish ran away with the spoon.” This fanciful bending of reality is also basic to surrealism. In this book, nonsense and surrealism combine to spark creativity and imagination. What’s true? What’s impossible? What’s absolutely absurd? From Eric Carle, creator of the classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, comes a book to make children laugh and think, preparing them for a lifetime of loving both words and art. Following on the heels of The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse (an homage to the artist Franz Marc and expressionism) and Friends, with its semi-abstract artwork, The Nonsense Show forms a trilogy of sorts, dedicated to introducing young readers to different styles of artwork without ever overlooking the need to, first and foremost, appeal to children and their love of play. One of the true legends and pioneers of picture book making continues to expand and challenge the genre.Praise for The Nonsense Show* "Carle creates fun and laughter in this homage to the surrealist artist René Magritte. [P]erfect for storytimes and silly times all round. Carle hits it out of the nonsense park!"–Booklist, starred review* "A sure hit as a read-aloud and a definite purchase for picture book collections."–School Library Journal, starred review

The Nonsense Show, by Eric Carle

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Nonsense indeed! A rabbit pulls a boy out of a hat, a mouse chases a cat, and a girl plays tennis with an apple instead of a ball. These are just a few of the goofy images readers will find in Carle's latest picture book. In rhyming text and surrealist illustrations, the book is full of Carle's distinct art featuring bright and colorfully textured images. Some figures will be instantly recognizable to readers, such as the yellow duck (10 Little Rubber Ducks) and the mama kangaroo (Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?), but with a fantastic twist; the rubber duck has human feet and the kangaroo is carrying a human child in her pouch. Children will love seeing everyday images turned on their heads and will delight in exploring these illustrations again and again. VERDICT A sure hit as a read-aloud and a definite purchase for picture book collections.—Amy Nolan, St. Joseph Public Library, St. Joseph, MI

About the Author Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of literally millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 25 languages and sold over twelve million copies. Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than sixty books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote.

Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Eric Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old; he was educated there, and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Kunste, in Stuttgart. But his dream was always to return to America, the land of his happiest childhood memories. So, in 1952, with a fine portfolio in hand and forty dollars in his pocket, he arrived in New York. Soon he found a job as a graphic designer in the promotion department of The New York Times. Later, he was the art director of an advertising agency for many years.

One day, respected educator and author, Bill Martin Jr, called to ask Carle to illustrate a story he had written. Martin's eye had been caught by a striking picture of a red lobster that Carle had created for an advertisement. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was the result of their collaboration. It is still a favorite with children everywhere. This was the beginning of Eric Carle's true career. Soon Carle was writing his own stories, too. His first wholly original book was 1,2,3 to the Zoo, followed soon afterward by the celebrated classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Eric Carle's art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images. Many of his books have an added dimension - die-cut pages, twinkling lights as in The Very Lonely Firefly, even the lifelike sound of a cricket's song as in The Very Quiet Cricket - giving them a playful quality: a toy that can be read, a book that can be touched. Children also enjoy working in collage and many send him pictures they have made themselves, inspired by his illustrations. He receives hundreds of letters each week from his young admirers. The secret of Eric Carle's books' appeal lies in his intuitive understanding of and respect for children, who sense in him instinctively someone who shares their most cherished thoughts and emotions.

The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature - an interest shared by most small children. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them. It is his concern for children, for their feelings and their inquisitiveness, for their creativity and their intellectual growth that, in addition to his beautiful artwork, makes the reading of his books such a stimulating and lasting experience.

Carle says: "With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates - will they be friendly? I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun."

Eric Carle has two grown-up children, a son and a daughter. With his wife Barbara, he lives in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Carles spend their summers in the nearby Berkshire hills.

Ducks growing out of bananas? A mouse catching a cat? What's wrong with this book? Blending surrealism and nonsense, this book has something strange and funny on every page with the purpose of getting children to decide what's true and what's impossible. My kids (age 5 and 2) enjoyed giggling at the silly parts and asking logical questions about the words and pictures that did not make sense to them.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Maestro Does It Again By Travis Ann Sherman The Nonsense Show isn't a narrative in the style of Carle's usual books; it's more of a cross between a riddle book and a what-if book, illustrated, of course, with Carle's brilliant style. Every page poses a new nonsense question: "What a funny-looking ball, thought the tennis ace." (picture of an apple flying at her through the air) "And wound up with applesauce in her face." The child hearing this book is going to be prodded to actively think on each page, as Carle turns the world inside out. He explores concepts and idioms with his silliness, doing what we try to do every day when reading, fully engaging the reader. Also, in this book and in others, the human beings range in every skin tone from pinky red to browny red to browny, really covering the diversity spectrum.

By Cherise Kachelmuss My kids loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar ever since they were little but now they are of course too old for it, so they say. Well this picture book is full of the same Eric Carle illustrations we expect but everything is so silly. The book is full of nonsense that will make you as a reader laugh and your child laugh possible uncontrollably! My kids cannot get enough of this book, even my 8 year old can't hold it in. This book is different too than The Very Hungry Caterpillar as it is a big picture book and not a board book, which is what we had. This is becoming a classic book for us that I am sure we will cherish for many years.I received this book to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

Mr. Huss has obviously done a LOT of research and is able to convey his teachings in a way that makes the reader feel supported and hopeful about retirement. While I have found his podcasts to be very informative, it has been VERY helpful to have a hard copy of his book to have a visual copy of the ideas presented in many of his podcasts.
