8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I actually learned quite a bit By Janet I'll tell you the truth here; I requested this book because it the title made me giggle. Debby Herbenick kept me reading though. The beginning gets a little scientific theory heavy, but it is written conversationally. The theory itself was unique and well presented and amply supported. The book is organized logically and the progression of exercise and applications is beautifully detailed. I actually learned quite a bit from Dr. Herbenick and I believe I could put a lot of it into practice easily. Glad I read it.*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Finally, someone has studied the "coregasm" phenomenon and broken it down in an easy to read format.

By Amazon Customer I bought this book for my gf thinking it would be about female specific workouts routines which help sexual performances (think actual gym workouts that help you have better sex.) This book is basically all about kegel exercises and how to have orgasms at the gym while working out. No workout plans, which was what was expected.

The Myth of Osteoporosis is a research-based work that provides clear insight into the myths of osteoporosis. These myths motivate both patient and physician into a lifetime of unnecessary testing and drug therapy therapy that can in fact be life-threatening. Gillian Sanson's well-documented explanation of these myths can spare women great anxiety. She takes the fear out of aging and restores women's sense of control over their bodies. She gives women good reasons for challenging the common way that osteoporosis is handled in the United States and in many other industrialized nations. This revised edition provides important information about the latest studies and the newest drugs on the market. * A diagnosis of low bone density is not a good predictor of fracture. Most fractures occur in those who have bone density in the normal range. * New U.S. osteoporosis screening recommendations target the majority of women over the age of 50, effectively turning millions of healthy women into patients. * The U.S. National Osteoporosis Foundation predicts an epidemic of osteoporosis by 2025 but hip fracture rates are falling, and have been for the last 3 decades. * Osteoporosis drugs carry serious risks and side effects and do not benefit the majority of people who take them. * Diagnoses have skyrocketed in recent decades, yet the mortality rate from osteoporosis remains largely unchanged. “…Sanson approaches the topic of osteoporosis with insight and wisdom...” - Journal of the American Medical Association. “At last a carefully-researched, comprehensive, and easy-to-read account of the world-wide marketing of osteoporosis as a killer disease in order to manufacture patients for the sale of drugs”. - Barbara Seaman Gill Sanson's book is a well-researched breath of fresh air that will help women everywhere better trust the wisdom of their bodies. -- Christiane Northrup, M.D. A diagnosis of low bone density is not a good predictor of fracture. Most fractures occur in those who have bone density in the normal range.

85 of 88 people found the following review helpful. Orthopedic Surgeon Viewpoint By Charles T. Price I am an orthopedic surgeon with no ties to pharmaceutical companies. This book minimizes a large and growing problem. Fragility fractures are difficult to treat. They require special techniques for handling in the operating room. They don't hold implants even though special types of implants are being designed that might help in the future. Fragility fractures recur with a downward spiral of disability and death following the initial fracture. She correctly states that "only" 14% of otherwise healthy women die from fracture related complications in the first year after a hip fracture. The word "only" is her word...14% a huge death rate for healthy people regardless of age and most are less than 80. She blames doctors for killing patients and says 14% death rate is acceptable in this disease? That's not the doctors, it's the disease. Osteopororis robs people of an active lifestyle. Look at her daughter who has six fractures by age 25. How could she deny that's not a problem? She correctly quotes a research study by DM Black showing that alendronate decreased fracture rate by 50% but the placebo group had 2.2% fractures and the alendronate group had 1.1% for an absolute fracture reduction of 1%. She belittles that but fails to recognize that this study was 3 years only. A 50% fracture reduction over 30 years is highly meaningful. Women have a 16% fracture risk between ages 50 and 80. A 50% reduction of fracture rate over that period of time would be substantial and life-saving for thousands of women. Short term studies should not be extrapolated to represent the true impact of treatment.I do agree that nutrition can do more if people would pay attention to other nutrients besides calcium and vitamin D. She got that right, but osteoporosis is not a trivial problem and pharmactutical companies do help lots of people enjoy better lives. The Myth of Osteoporosis - Revised Edition

It examines with thoughtfulness and great knowledge the process from DEXA scan to diagnosis to medication, raising crucial questions every step of the way. Just as HRT was pushed as a panacea by almost all doctors for years, only to turn out to cause the very heart disease and cancer it was supposed to help, so Sanson shows that this huge multi-billion-dollar osteoporosis industry is built on one questionable premise after another. The DEXA scan results cannot show the strength--the quality--of bone, a crucial factor. As for bone density, which it does measure, there is little or no correlation between bone density and fracture. Most older people who fracture have normal bone density or mildly low. The whole idea of measuring elderly women's bones against the standard of those of young women (possibly athletes) in their prime is itself questionable. Sanson shows how truly small the gains from bisphosphonates are, how deceiving the percentages presented, and how serious the side effects. This full story of the drugs is just starting to come out now, after the certitudes with which doctors proscribed Fosamax, Actonel, and Forteo just a few years ago. She takes every detail of what women are told and exposes it to the light of day. Consider the terror generated by the endlessly repeated claim that hip fracture is very frequent in the elderly and is a death sentence. Sanson counters by evidence and good sense that those who fracture hips are preponderantly the very old, often in their late 80s and 90s, and that those of die of it are likely to have many other illnesses, with poor vision and often dementia as well, perhaps alone in nursing homes; but that a fairly healthy elderly person will recover. Sanson checks out Vitamin D, Calcitonin, Strontium--gives a whole chapter to the confusing but crucial subject of calcium (not a good solution)--gives a wise exercise overview--and thinks reducing the risks of falling is most important of all to prevent fractures. She wants us to question physicians, and to accept that aging is not a disease. Sanson's whole family was diagnosed with osteoporosis years ago, and she had to decide whether to permit her children to be medicated, so her relation to the researching of this subject began with that urgency. For years a professional medical health writer, she approaches it with an independence that is as rare as it is precious. If this condition is of any concern to you, you must read this book!

Saved Myself By Rebecca I broke my leg 8 months ago after falling while scurrying across a wet, and newly waxed, floor, while trying to save a cup of coffee and laptop at the same time. Recently, I had a bone mineral density (BMD) test, and my doctor prescribed Fosamax, I decided I needed to do a little research. This book and Dr. Susan Ott's web page provided all the information I needed.I think I saved my life! According to the risk factors in the book and the BMD test, I'm not a high risk! I'm 58, 130 lbs., very active (Zumba, skiing, gardening, etc), eat a healthy diet (no soda for years, very little dairy, and lots of protein & veggies, mostly local), and tan very easily. After reading this book, I am absolutely convinced that taking any of those biphosphonates would be a very bad idea! Thankfully, I decided to do the research before following my doctor's advice. After reading the book, I went back to the doctor. She was not familiar with the book, and claimed, that as a general practitioner, she's not as knowledgeable as specialists. I asked her about the Z scores on my test. She said she doesn't refer to those. I asked for a blood test to determine the level of vitamin D. I also wanted the details of my BMD test. Well, my level of D is 33. The avg. is 40. I'm taking 2000 IU a day of vitamin D, plus what I get in my diet.Without this book, I would know nothing about the 16 risk factors, the different brands and effects of biphosphonates, the BMD test history and $$ involved, other tests, and other osteoporosis studies. Like I said, I think I saved my life!

It’s not about starving yourself and/ or eating the wrong food just to make you look thinner. It has to come from within and it has to have a long term effect on you. I think Dash Diet is really one of the best ways to do this. This book has everything you need to know about Dash Diet. It has a comprehensive set of chapters that are easy to understand and to follow. It takes off from explaining what Dash diet is and why it was created. This way, I tend to fully commit myself to this diet because I know its foundation and what benefits I will be getting from it. Aside from tons of tips, my favorite part, the meal plan and different recipes, are found at the end of the book. Food ideas are always great when a diet is introduced!

Practical recipes and advice for the Dash Diet By Mby The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a great resource for nutrition, and this book is a nice little comprehensive introduction to it. If you want a clear outline of the DASH diet, with practical steps of how to do it, then this is for you. This book mostly consists of recipes, after an introduction to the purpose of the diet. The book does advise some low-fat options, however I personally believe adding some good fat and reducing grain is also essential to a rounded, nutritious and healthy diet. If you're looking for some practical ways to apply a Dash diet, then having a great range of recipes like these at your fingertips is invaluable.

How to transform your life in ten days By Sarah Stuart I have had this book for ten days and in that time, being an avid reader, I have bought and read other books. Why did I download “Sleep”? I was curious, that’s all. I didn’t suffer from a sleep disorder! I didn’t, in as much as I don’t snore or have any difficulty in falling asleep the instant my head touches the pillow.Instant sleep, Ms Harris informed me in her friendly, non-judgemental way, is my body telling me I need more sleep, and that sleep needs to be at the right time: the right time being a regular time. Well, that was out for a start! I live in the UK, which means I’m anything between 5 and 7 hours ahead of America… Australia wakes in the middle of the night… and there are many mornings I must be up and out by six am.I went back to the beginning; the book opens with why we all need sleep, and it’s fascinating. It’s also frightening if you’re not getting good quality sleep, and my problem was self-inflicted. I’m cured: note the time I’m posting this review. For anyone suffering insomnia, for whatever reason, the answers are all in this book. They are simple to understand and, unless you need to replace a mattress, they’ll cost you very little. Following most of the advice costs nothing. Very highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Thank you, Charlie and Nana, for sharing more of your recipes, and for encouraging young chefs everywhere. By Bookworm Gang I always think the Charlie and Nana cookbook series are a great way to encourage kids to take a real interest in both simple cooking and in what food they eat. This latest Thanksgiving Dinner book is no exception. The book finds three simpler parts of the family's meal where a youngster can get involved and feel they are contributing.Their are many young adults who would have no idea how to cook gravy from scratch, yet this little book shows how such things can be achieved very simply. And what youngster wouldn't take an interest in helping to cook a pumpkin pie? I'd no idea myself that pumpkin pie could be made so simply or healthily, and am tempted to have a go at that simple recipe!Particularly relevant to a Thanksgiving meal, this whole series also promotes the whole concept of a loving family, and of spending time with those you love.Thank you, Charlie and Nana, for sharing more of your recipes, and for encouraging young chefs everywhere.

By Anee A great book by Midge Newth!I think children should learn how to cook from an early age and Charlie learns how to make pumpkin pie, veg and of course the gravy! He mixes, mashes and even inserts things in the oven. And then before they eat he is reminded of why they are doing this in the first place.I love the illustrations in this book, they are colourful and the ingredients look real. It even includes the recipes! An excellent book to start your children helping in the kitchen. I hope that there are more to come.

When I first decided to admit to myself and others that I was a Hoarder, I asked myself, “Okay, what are you going to do about it?” My first answer was to write. I decided to write for a year about being a hoarder. I would write about anything that related to why I was a hoarder. I would write about my struggles and discoveries. About half way through that year I decided that the things that I was discovering about the reasons behind my hoarding were common to many people. Somewhere during that time I decided that I would eventually make these writings public. A saying that I have often thought of while writing these meditations is “Perception is Reality.” This book has been a journey of self-exploration from my perception. Other people who were present have viewed the same events differently and have come to different conclusions. Even so, though each person is different with unique situations, many of us have similar types of battles, emotions, triumphs, and feelings. We all laugh, cry, feel pain, and learn joy… As I have traveled my personal path of self-discovery, I hope that what I have found may help someone else on their own path.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good real-life read on interesting topic By Amazon Customer Full disclosure, this book was written by a friend of mine. If the topic of hoarding interests you, this is a good read. It is a combination of a personal diary and a meditation type of approach to the topic of hoarding. What I liked about it was it was it is not a "how to" book, but rather a "how I" book, and it is not an "I succeeded" but "this is where I've gotten so far" book. It's humble. And I liked that. There are several concepts you can apply even if hoarding is not an issue for you. One of the chapters is "I can do anything for 15 minutes". That's a pretty neat concept for anything you're struggling with. I took several inspirational ideas from book, it was encouraging. It's a lot cheaper than therapy!

Although she’s an orphan in indentured servitude, sixteen-year-old Jennifer Strange is pretty good at her job of managing the unpredictable crew at Kazam Mystical Arts Management. She already solved the Dragon Problem, avoided mass destruction by Quarkbeast, and helped save magic in the Ununited Kingdoms. Yet even Jennifer may be defeated when the long-absent Mighty Shandar makes an astonishing appearance and commands her to find the Eye of Zoltar—proclaiming that if she fails, he will eliminate the only two dragons left on earth.

Review "Well-plotted, intelligent hilarity." —Kirkus "Fans of strong, brave, intelligent females will root for Jennifer and her gang, and wait impatiently for the next book." —School Library Journal "Fans will laugh all the way to the last page and will be happy to hear there is more absurdity to come." —Booklist "Jasper Fforde’s “Dragonslayer” series is creative, hilarious, inventive, entertaining, and all-around bloody fun." —FriendsShareBooks.com "This third book in The Chronicles of Kazam series displays dynamic plotting, unforgettable characters, innovative writing, and cheeky humor, making this a fine addition to any library’s fantasy collection." —VOYA "Fforde’s comic genius is such that he can poke fun at fantasy’s generic tropes (“A quest always demanded the death of a trusted friend”) and, at the same time, make them work for him. Thoroughly satisfying." —Horn Book Magazine

one Where We Are Now

The first thing we had to do was catch the Tralfamosaur. The obvious question, other than “What’s a Tralfamosaur?” was “Why us?” The answer to the first question was that this was a magical beast, created by some long-forgotten wizard when conjuring up weird and exotic creatures had been briefly fashionable. The Tralfamosaur is about the size and weight of an elephant, has a brain no bigger than a Ping-Pong ball, and can outrun a human. More relevant to anyone trying to catch one, Tralfamosaurs aren’t particularly fussy about what they eat. And when they are hungry—which is much of the time—they are even less fussy. A sheep, cow, rubber tire, garden shed, antelope, smallish automobile, or human would go down equally well. In short, the Tralfamosaur is a lot like a Tyrannosaurus rex, but without the sunny disposition.    And we had to capture it. Oh, and the answer to the “Why us?” question was that it was our fault the rotten thing had escaped.    In case you’re new to my life, I’m sixteen, a girl, and an orphan—hey, no biggie; lots of kids don’t have parents here in the Ununited Kingdoms, because so many people have been lost in the endless Troll Wars these past sixty years. With lots of orphans around, there’s plenty of cheap labor. I got lucky. Instead of being sold into the garment, fast food, or hotel industry, I get to spend my six years of indentured servitude at Kazam Mystical Arts Management, a registered House of Enchantment run by the Great Zambini. Kazam does what all Houses of Enchantment used to do: rent out wizards to perform magical feats. The problem is that in the past half century, magic has faded, so we are really down to finding lost shoes, rewiring houses, unblocking drains, and getting cats out of trees. It’s a bit demeaning for the once-mighty sorcerers who work for us, but at least it’s paid work.    At Kazam I found out that magic has not much to do with black cats, cauldrons, wands, pointy hats, and broomsticks. No, those are only in the movies. Real magic is weird and mysterious, a fusion between science and faith. The practical way of looking at it is this: Magic swirls about us like an invisible fog of emotional energy that can be tapped by those skilled in the mystical arts, and then channeled into a concentrated burst of energy from the tips of the index fingers. The technical name for magic is variable electro-gravitational mutable subatomic force, but the usual term is wizidrical energy, or, simply, crackle.    So there I was, assistant to the Great Zambini, learning well and working hard, when Zambini disappeared, quite literally, in a puff of smoke. He didn’t return, or at least not for anything but a few minutes at a time and often in random locations, so I took over the running of the company at age fifteen. Okay, that was a biggie, but I coped and, long story short, I saved dragons from extinction, averted war between the nations of Snodd and Brecon, and helped the power of magic begin to reestablish itself.    And that’s when the trouble really started. King Snodd thought using the power of magic for corporate profit would be a seriously good scam, something we at Kazam weren’t that happy about. Even longer story short, we held a magic contest to decide who controls magic, and after a lot of cheating by the king to try to make us lose, he failed—and we are now a House of Enchantment free from royal meddling and can concentrate on rebuilding magic into a noble craft.    I now manage forty-five barely sane sorcerers at Kazam, only eight of whom have a legal permit to perform magic. If you think wizards are all wise purveyors of the mystical arts and have sparkling wizidrical energy streaming from their fingertips, think again. They are for the most part undisciplined, infantile, argumentative, and infuriating; their magic only works when they really concentrate, which isn’t that often, and misspellings are common. But when it works, a well-spelled feat of magic is the most wondrous thing to behold, like your favorite book, painting, music, and movie all at the same time, with chocolate and a meaningful hug from someone you love thrown in for good measure. So despite everything, it’s a good business in which to work. Besides, there’s rarely a dull moment.    So that’s me. I have an orphaned assistant named Tiger Prawns, I am now Dragon Ambassador to the World, and I have a pet Quarkbeast at least nine times as frightening as the most frightening thing you’ve ever seen.    My name is Jennifer Strange. Welcome to my world.    Now, let’s find that Tralfamosaur.

two Zambini Towers

Those forty-five sorcerers, Tiger, and I all lived in a large, eleven-story, ornate ex-hotel called Zambini Towers. It was in a bad state of repair, and even though we had some spare magic to restore it to glory, we had decided we wouldn’t, other than expanding the Kazam offices after business picked up. There was a certain charm about the faded wallpaper, warped wood, missing windowpanes, and leaky roof. Some argued that the surroundings were peculiarly suitable for the Mystical Arts, others argued that the place was a fetid dump suitable only for demolition, and I sat somewhere between the two.    When the call came in, Perkins and I were in the shabby, wood-paneled lobby.    “There’s a Tralfamosaur loose somewhere between here and Ross,” said Tiger, waving a report forwarded by the police.    “Anyone eaten?” I asked.    “All of two railroad workers and part of a fisherman.” Tiger was twelve and, like me, a foundling. He was stuck at Kazam for four years and after that could apply for citizenship or earn it fighting in the next Troll War, which probably wouldn’t be far off. Troll Wars were like Batman movies: both were repeated at regular intervals, featured expensive hardware, and were broadly predictable. The difference was that during the Troll Wars, humans always lost—and badly. In Troll War IV, eight years ago, sixty thousand troops were lost before General Snood had even finished giving the order to advance. The final death toll was six times higher.    “Three eaten already?” I said. “We need to get Big T back to the zoo before he gets hungry again.”    “How long will that be?” asked Tiger, who was small in stature but big on questions.    I swiftly estimated how much calorific value there was in a railway worker, matched that to what I knew of a Tralfamosaur’s metabolism, and added a rough guess of how much of the fisherman had been consumed. “Three hours,” I said. “Four, tops. Which sorcerers are on duty right now?”    Tiger consulted his clipboard. “Lady Mawgon and the Wizard Moobin.”    “I’ll help out,” said Perkins. He smiled and added, “As long as I’m not eaten.”    I told him I couldn’t really offer many guarantees as far as Tralfamosaurs were concerned. “Still in?” I asked.    “Why not?” he said with a chuckle. “I haven’t been terrified for—ooh—at least a couple of days.”    Perkins was Kazam’s youngest and newest legal sorcerer, licensed for less than a week. He was eighteen and, while not yet very powerful, showed good promise; most sorcerers didn’t start doing any really useful magic until their thirties. Perkins and I had been about to go on our first date when the Tralfamosaur call came in, but that would have to wait.    “Okay,” I said to Tiger. “Fetch Mawgon and Moobin, and you should also call Once Magnificent Boo.”    “Got it,” said Tiger.    I turned to Perkins. “Okay if we go on that date later? You know how it is in the magic industry: spell first, fun second.”    “I kind of figured that,” he replied, “so why don’t we make this assignment the date? I could bring some food and a thermos of hot chocolate.”    Considering that neither of us had any experience in romance whatsoever, a working date would surely be easier than an actual date. “Okay,” I said, “you’re on. But no dressing up, and we split the cost.”    “Game on. I’ll go and make sandwiches and conjure up that thermos.”

While I waited for the other sorcerers to arrive, I read what I could about Tralfamosaurs in the Codex Magicalis, which wasn’t much. The creature had been created magically in the 1780s on the order of the Cambrian Empire’s Emperor Tharv I, because he wanted “a challenging beast to hunt for sport,” a role it played with all due savagery. Two hundred years later, people still pay good money to try to hunt them, usually with fatal consequences for the hunter. Oddly, this made Tralfamosaur hunting more popular; it seemed that citizens were becoming increasingly fond of danger in these modern, safety-conscious times. The Cambrian Empire now made good money out of what it called jeopardy tourism: vacations for those seeking life-threatening situations.    The first to arrive in the lobby was Wizard Moobin, who, unlike all the other sorcerers, was barely insane at all. Aside from his usual magical duties, he worked in magic research and development. Last month, Moobin’s team had been working on spells for turning oneself temporarily to rubber to survive a fall, as well as a method of reliable communication using snails. He was good company, aged a little over forty, and was at least polite and gave me due respect for my efforts.    “The Tralfamosaur escaped,” I told him. “When you and Patrick surged this afternoon during the bridge rebuilding, two quarter-ton blocks of stone were catapulted into the sky.”    “I wondered what had happened to them,” said Moobin thoughtfully.    “One fell to earth in an orchard near Belmont, and the other landed on the Ross-to-Hereford branch line, derailing a train that was transporting the Tralfamosaur to Woburn Safari Park for some sort of dangerous animal exchange deal.”    “Ah,” said Moobin, “so we’re kind of responsible for this, aren’t we?”    “I’m afraid so,” I replied, “and it’s already eaten three people.”    “Whoops,” said Moobin.    “Whoops nothing,” said Lady Mawgon, who had arrived with Tiger close behind. “Civilians have to take their risks with the rest of us.”    Unlike Moobin, Lady Mawgon was not our favorite sorcerer but was undeniably good at what she did. She had been the official sorcerer of the Kingdom of Kent before the downturn of magical power, and her fall from that lofty status had made her frosty and ill-tempered. She had recently turned seventy, scowled constantly, and had the unsettling habit of gliding everywhere, as though she wore roller skates beneath the folds of her large black dress.    “Even so,” I said diplomatically, “it’s probably not a good idea to let the Tralfamosaur eat people.”    “I suppose not,” conceded Lady Mawgon. “What about Once Magnificent Boo?”    “Already in hand,” I replied, indicating to where Tiger was speaking on the phone.    Once Magnificent Boo had, as her name suggested, once been magnificent. She could have been as powerful as the Mighty Shandar himself, but was long retired and saddled with a dark personality that made Lady Mawgon seem almost sunny. The reason was simple: Boo had been robbed of her dazzling career in sorcery by the removal of her index fingers, the conduit of a sorcerer’s power. Lost for over three decades, the fingers had been recently recovered by us—but even when Boo was reunited with the dry bones, the only magic she could do was wayward and unfocused. These days she studied Quarkbeasts and was the world’s leading authority on Tralfamosaurs, which was the reason we needed her.    “She’ll meet you there,” said Tiger, replacing the receiver. “I’ll stay here and man the phones in case you need anything sent over.”    Once Perkins had returned with the sandwiches, we trooped outside to my Volkswagen Beetle. There were better cars in the basement at Zambini Towers, but the VW had huge sentimental value: I had been found wrapped in a blanket on the back seat outside the Ladies of the Lobster orphanage one windswept night sixteen years earlier. There was a note stuffed under one windshield wiper:

Please look after this poor dear child,as her parents died in the Troll Wars.PS: I think the engine may need some oiland the tire pressure checked.PPS: We think her name should be Jennifer.PPPS: The child, not the car.PPPPS: For her surname, choose something strange.

The car had been kept—all items found with a foundling were, by royal decree—and was presented to me when the Blessed Ladies of the Lobster sold me to Kazam. After checking the tire pressure and adding some oil, the engine had started the first time, and I drove to my first job in my own car. If you think fourteen is too young to start driving, think again. The Kingdom of Snodd grants driver’s licenses on the basis of responsibility, not age, which can frustrate forty-something guys no end when they fail their responsibility test for the umpteenth time.    “Shotgun!” yelled Lady Mawgon as she plunked herself in the passenger seat. Everyone groaned. Being in the back of the Volkswagen meant sitting next to the Quarkbeast, a creature often described as a cross between a Labrador and an open knife drawer, with a bit of velociraptor and scaly pangolin thrown in for good measure. Despite its terrifying appearance and an odd habit of eating metal, the Quarkbeast was a loyal and intelligent companion.    “Right,” I said as we drove off, “does anyone have a plan for how we’re going to recapture the Tralfamosaur?”    There was silence.    “How about this,” I said. “We modify our plans with regard to ongoing facts as they become known to us, then re-modify them as the situation unfolds.”    “You mean make it all up as we go along?” asked Perkins.    “Right.”    “It’s worked before,” said Lady Mawgon.    “Many times,” replied Moobin.    “Quark,” said the Quarkbeast.

This said, EoZ is the third in a series of books aimed at youngsters in early teens I'd guess - the Harry Potter bracket, right, and I m definitely not there, age-wise, having decades of experience inbeing young. This book, well, this book appears to be written a bit in a hurry, and contains a McGuffin, and a terrible loss (no spoilers) to one of the persons, which appear to completely pass over the head of said person in a manner that is to me incomprehensible. If you have read #1 and #2, you will be required to read this one, but, apart from some nice banter and cliffhangers, it is so far the weakest link in the chain.

Great new book in a series which is definitively NOT a trilogy By Andrew C Wheeler It's a real treat to watch a skilled writer flash his cards once and then pocket them: he's secure in the knowledge that you saw and noticed them, and you know that those few specific and casually-dropped references will pay off in the end. And seeing a writer do it in a book for young adults is doubly nice, since it shows that writer has faith in his young readers; even if they haven't read as many books yet as their grizzled elders, they can pick up the hints and piece it all together. The third book in Jasper Fforde's "Chronicles of Kazam" series, THE EYE OF ZOLTAR, has those pleasures and more. It follows The Last Dragonslayer and The Song of the Quarkbeast and will have at least one more book to complete the series -- not to put too fine a point on it, but ZOLTAR has more of a stopping point than an ending. It's not a cliffhanger -- anyone near a precipice is either safely away or assuredly fallen to their doom -- but it clearly calls for another book.Things seem to be relatively normal as this book opens: Kazam Mystical Arts Management is left as the only magical company in the Ununited Kingdoms, after the failed schemes of their rival, the Amazing Blix, in the previous books. Sure, Kazam's interim manager, Jennifer Strange, has to quickly organize an expedition to capture a dangerous Tralfamosaur and send it off to the wild neighboring Cambrian Empire, but that goes off relatively smoothly. She does have to sacrifice her beloved Volkswagen Beetle as the bait that lured the Tralfamosaur, but Kazam's headquarters Zambini Towers has dozens of working vehicles in its basement that she can use instead.Unfortunately, the Cambrian Empire has a thriving business in ransom -- practically the only thriving business in the Cambrian Empire, besides danger tourism -- and the Once Magnificent Boo (in her youth, one of the great wizards of the world; since the theft of her wizidrical index fingers, a misanthropic expert on nasty beasts) has been kidnapped while trying to settle the Tralfamosaur.Even worse, the greatest wizard of all time, the Mighty Shandar, is unhappy with Jennifer, because she upset one of his greatest achievements. Centuries before -- Shandar spends most of his time in stone, to prolong his life, and only emerges to work -- he took a very lucrative job to rid the world of all dragons. Jennifer foiled that plan in the first book; there are now two young dragons, who will grow and eventually reproduce. But Shandar has a proposal: if Jennifer finds the Eye of Zoltar for him -- a powerful dark magical talisman lost for ages -- he'll forgive the transgression. If not, he'll have to attack the dragons, and anyone who tries to stand in his way -- such as Jennifer and the entire staff of Kazam -- will be destroyed along the way.By an amazing coincidence, the only clue to the Eye's location is also deep in the Cambrian Empire. So Jennifer sets off in an old tanklike Bugatti Royale, armed with a letter of credit and everything everyone knows about the Eye, which is practically nothing. With her are Perkins, a wizard who's just passed his exams and who might be her boyfriend if things ever settle down, and Laura Scrubb, the brain of the spoiled Princess Shazza placed into the body of her handmaiden for a while so she can learn a little humility and useful skills. The Cambrian Empire is a dangerous wilderness, populated primarily by squabbling ransom-happy tribes and a wide variety of extremely deadly fauna. It's also cut off almost entirely from the outside world: all air traffic (including birds) is shot down at the border on orders of the Emperor, and no news from beyond the borders is allowed in. But Jennifer's hard-bitten and experienced guide -- who is approximately twelve -- declares that she can give their team 50% odds of survival: a good half of them will make it out alive. And then things get really hairy....THE EYE OF ZOLTAR is a slight departure in style for this series: the first two book were each like an escalating juggling act, with complications piling on top of each other until a final crisis threatened everything. This time out, Fforde uses a more linear one-damn-thing-after-another plot, as Jennifer's expedition gains and loses members and fights through more travails and dangers than can be described here. But all along, there are those little hints -- a close reader will be able to guess what else is going on at the same time, and how it all fits together. I wouldn't recommend any reader start the series with this book, since it depends heavily on the earlier ones -- and the impatient should probably wait until the next volume is out as well. But it's a heartfelt, funny fantasy novel for teens with a great main character, a quirky world, and a deep sense of how the world isn't fair but can be made better by hard work and clear sight. And, as usual, I mean "for teens" to mean anyone who ever was one, or is close enough to being one.

High adventure, witty absurdities By Jaylia This is the third in Jasper Fforde’s YA series featuring Jennifer Strange, the competent 16-year-old running an agency of magicians in the Ununited Kingdom, a highly skewed alternate world UK. Jennifer’s the kind of girl who takes disasters in stride, which is fortunate because just as she is about to have her first date she and her young man have to alter their plans to act as bait for a crazed dinosaur-sized magical creature on a rampage, and almost immediately after they must embark on a quest across the border with a petulant self-absorbed princess in tow to find the Eye of Zoltar, though they’re be careful to not refer to their expedition as a quest because that would bring on reams of paperwork and substantial fees.Romance is not Fforde’s strong suit, but brilliant not quite absurd absurdities with frequent enough wisps of truth to make them irresistibly funny are, and that’s on full display here. I’ve been missing the Neanderthals from the early books of Fforde’s wonderful Thursday Next series (a favorite of mine because it’s full of literary references) so I was thrilled to find a new Australopithecus character here. There’s a satisfying ending to Eye of Zoltar, but the good news is it’s a to-be-continued story so there will be at least one more of these books packed with nonstop action, strong female characters, unrelenting wit.
