What is health? Is health found in a blood test result or x-ray? Is health the absence of disease or something else entirely? For author Kat Elton, who has lived with a chronic, painful disease since age two, true health is a way of life. It takes daily practice, diligence, and the commitment to yourself that no matter what life hands you, you will never stop trying. Throughout this book, Kat uses her personal experiences to provide valuable insights into how to be healthy. The ultimate irony is this; within the experience of illness the path to true health can be found. Illness and pain create a fierce desire to be healthy, and this desire can move mountains, one step at a time. Kat describes how qualities such as honesty, resilience, love, and connection can move you towards a healthy life whether or not you have a diagnosis of disease. In the end, true health is a choice - choosing health means listening to your inner wisdom and having the strength to follow through with what it is telling you.

By Durango Mountain Biker Fantastic book for anyone who is living with a disease or chronic pain. I have survived combat, I have been ran over by cars twice while riding my bicycle, and I have been in several automobile crashes, and I know what chronic pain is all about. 25+ years of narcotics has left my body damaged, relationships strained, and it almost took my zest for life. Kats book is a breath of fresh air for my mental well being, and I have learned new life-tools that I will be utilizing to better the quality of my life. Great read, inspiring, and healing; wonderful book....

For generations, the Frost family has run the Museum of Magical and Rare Artifacts, handing down guardianship from mother to daughter, always keeping their secrets to family only. Gathered within museum s walls is a collection dedicated to the Grimm fairy tales and to the rare items the family has acquired: Cinderella s glass slipper, Snow White s poisoned apple, the evil queen s magic mirror, Sleeping Beauty s enchanted spinning wheel...Seventeen-year-old Bianca Frost wants none of it, dreaming instead of a career in art or photography or...well, anything except working in the family s museum. She knows the items in the glass display cases are fakes because, of course, magic doesn't really exist. She s about to find out how wrong she is.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Wow...just...wow. By Michael Dunne This is embarrassing. Grown men are not supposed to be bowled over by novels clearly written for young (and likely female) audiences. I have the pleasure of being in a writer's group with Ms. DeJesus and when a chance came along to purchase the Kindle version of First Frost on a holiday bargain, well, I had to go for it. I had some extra credits on my Amazon Christmas gift card and said to myself, "What the heck?"Having previously read the synopsis for First Frost - as well as a few blog reviews - I figured it would be kind of a girly fairy tale with a twist or two. From what I'd seen and heard, there was enough to interest me. I write in the fantasy genre and fairy tales are, at heart, fantasy; so...First and foremost, First Frost is an excellent novel. It is well written with engaging characters and a tight, well-defined plot. The pacing is perfect; at no point in the story did I say to myself, "That's bogus! Character X would never be able to pull that off," or anything of the sort. The growth of Bianca Frost, the story's main protagonist is beautifully written and despite my rather gruff, public pooh-poohing of modern, young adult fiction, I was bowled over by what a great book First Frost is.No novel is perfect and I could list a couple of things that might have annoyed me but at the end of the day I would merely be nit picking. One thing I've noticed while reading a lot of independently published fiction over the last few years is that the books universally have a smattering - to a lesser or greater degree - of spelling and/or grammatical errors. I've read some brilliant stories that are able to overcome the author's obvious faux pas and still be good. In the case of First Frost, while there are a few grammatical errors, they are minimal and by the halfway point in the story I had forgotten about the ones I'd noted and didn't discover any more. This could be because there aren't any later in the tale - or it could be because the book is such a splendid read that I failed to even note them. I think I'll settle on the latter.I highly recommend First Frost and can't wait for the soon-to-be released sequel!Just don't tell anyone ;-)

By carsonbuckingham This is one terrific fairy tale in which modern times spill over into the Fae world of "Everafter," where most of the story takes place. We begin with a museum full of fairy tale artifacts--how can you go wrong with that? Rose and Bianca Frost run the place. Bianca is Rose's 17 year-old misfit daughter who doesn't feel like she belongs . . . anywhere. Her father vanished ten years prior under mysterious circumstances which Rose refuses to discuss. However, one night, Rose discovers her mother and a strange old lady "communicating" in the back yard, and it is after this that Rose is enlightened about her past, what really happened to her father, her family history, and who she is. It's a lot to take in. When Rose is spirited away to Everafter, and her safe return depends upon an old book, Bianca and her best friend, Ming, opt, not to just turn over the book, but to pursue. And from here the story truly becomes wondrous. Please do yourself a favor and buy a copy of this astonishing book. Here there are tears, laughter, adventure, swords, sorcery, true love, suspense, terror, magic, evil, loyalty, courage and the big BAD wolf. That's a lot of bang for your buck! This book will become an old friend, to be taken down with loving hands and read again and again when we find that we need just that little bit of magic, that little bit of courage, in our daily lives on this side of Everafter.

But this isn't a retelling, it is more of an alternate universe to fairy tale land, kind of book. I loved how the worlds were set up. Fairy tales are real and Bianca's family has possibily the coolest museum in the whole world. They have a fairy tale artifacts museum. I would love to go there! So one day Bianca finds out that the stuff at the museum is real and that her family are actually witches that come from a direct line of Snow White. First Frost is a fast paced action adventure with a big time magical twist. I loved seeing all of the various items from the fairy tales and seeing how Bianca used them on her quest. What was her quest? She had to get her mother back from the evil witch. First Frost kind of reminded me of the tv mini series, The Tenth Kingdom or the ABC show Once Upon a Time. I just love the idea of all the fairy tales together and having a modern take on how all of it really went down.Bianca took the news that her family is magical all in stride. At first I thought it was a little unrealistic how easily she was taking in all of the information, but then I stopped to think about it for a minute. She saw actual magic. I guess once you see magic in action, the cat is out of the bag. Plus her friend, jumped on board as soon as she found out as well, BUT she was justifiably nervous in the new land. I thought that she initial reaction was a little unrealistic, but as soon as Ming had time to think things over she reacted how I would have in her shoes. It made me like her a little more.Bianca crosses over to Everafter with a spell. There she meets a prince and Terrance. I liked both of them. I really liked how the prince was kind of cocky and thought he was the best thing since sliced bread, because lets be honest- a prince probably would be spoiled and a little arrogant. I thought that was a nice touch, rather than having the super charming prince that everyone loves.First Frost mixes a bunch of different classic fairy tales together. I thought it was well written, and I loved seeing all of the characters work together and interact. My favorite part was seeing how Bianca would use the artifacts from the museum on her quest. There is even a small, but adorable, romance brewing in the story. Fans of fairy tales should check out First Frost. There is a bit of a cliffhanger to segway into book 2, but I thought overall book 1 was a complete story on its own. I wasn't left completely hanging. This is a great fairy tale adventure.3.5/5*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review.

A baby abandoned. A queen dishonoured. And a cataclysmic war to wipe out the known world. The Mahabharata – the Great Bharat -- is a grand and timeless story, the oldest and longest epic in the world. A perennial bestseller in India, it has enthralled millions throughout the centuries and is as relevant, wise, and spellbinding today as ever. Sons of Gods is a new version of this ancient Indian classic. It transports the reader into a wonderful world of the almighty spirit: where a mantra spoken flippantly can change the course of history; where a curse uttered in anger can spell doom and destruction; where a truly awesome vow can grant the power of life over death. Its heroes have survived the millennia. Bhishma, who possesses the boon of invincibility, and can choose the time, method, and agent of his death. Amba, the wronged princess who changes sex to seek revenge. Arjuna, the mightiest archer of all, and dearest friend of Krishna, God’s incarnation. Arjuna’s arch-enemy Karna, the invincible but doomed son of the Sun-god. The fire-born queen Draupadi, who marries all five of the famous Pandava brothers, and whose word is their command. “…love, betrayal, lust, envy, pride, devotion, and heroism never go out of style. Sons Of Gods is a literary soap opera with a soul that spans the full horizon.” --- Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full and Monday’s Lie More on: www.sonsofgods.blogspot.com

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent streamlined retelling of this lengthy ancient epic By Shelley There are many retellings of the Mahabharata, India's classic epic. I have read several and would recommend Sons of Gods for anyone not already familiar with this ancient tale.Taken as a whole, the Mahabharata is unwieldy, to say the least. It is filled with digressions and stories within stories that resist linear narrative. Sharon Maas's version is admirably streamlined for readers who want to get a grounding in the basic story before exploring in more detail the rambling conglomeration of myths, legends, and history that make up this massive tale. The greatest strength of Sons of Gods lies in its introduction to the complex Kuru-Pandava lineage. Understanding the complicated issues around the succession is key to understanding the tragic war between the two princely lines. Maas lays out the whole convoluted tale, from the grandfather Santanu to the grandsons Dhritarashtra and Pandu. Dhritarashtra, who is born blind, cannot rule. Pandu, the younger one, will inherit. The princess Kunti serves the great sage Durvasa and because of her piety receives a boon from him. He teaches her a mantra that enables her to summon any god, and though she is warned not to use it lightly, she can't resist trying it. She summons the sun god Surya, and by him she bears a son. Her honor is at stake, however. Not daring to reveal she has borne a child she sets her little son afloat in a basket. Unlike Moses, who is rescued by a royal princess, a charioteer's wife finds Kunti's son. She and her husband, ignorant of his illustrious lineage, raise the child as their own , calling him Karna. In due course, Kunti marries Pandu. Because of a curse (read the book if you want to know more!) Pandu is unable to father children on his wives Kunti and Madri. To ensure her husband's line, Kunti uses her mantra to summon the gods Dharma, Vayu, and Indra, who father sons on her. She allows Pandu's other wife to use the mantra to summon the Ashvins, twin gods who father Madri's twins. These sons of gods, who by ancient law of levirate become Pandu's heirs (the Pandavas), grow to manhood ignorant of their half-brother Karna just as he is ignorant of his lineage.Maas's version goes straight and true from the early conflicts between the young Kuru and Pandava princes, who are raised in the same royal household, to the martial contest where an unknown charioteer's son Karna challenges the haughty Pandava prince Arjuna and becomes an ally of the Kurus, through the infamous game of dice to the Pandavas' thirteen year exile to the final war. I read avidly; didn't put it down, even though the ending was no mystery to me. It hits the most important events and illustrates the moral conflicts, but necessarily leaves out a great deal.Maas's prose is lovely and descriptive. It also reflects the fact that the Mahabharata is a religious text as well as a ripping tale. For me, this sometimes renders the characters two-dimensional. Nevertheless, it's a very good read.

Like most of my American contemporaries, Greek and Roman myths were part of our school curriculum. On my own, I sought out Native American and Norse tales. As I let them, they spilled the secrets of the forces and spirits that put color and flourish over the grey cogs of physics and rationalism. I've loved these stories for the freedom from the strictly literal that they offer; the chance to swim in what it says of humanity in the stories we invent to explain the universe.I had certainly heard of India's rich fables and parables, particularly, the Bhagavad Gita. But I didn't know of its larger contextual epic, The Mahabharata. And I also didn't know that I was poorer for it.I had read Sharon Maas (writing here as Aruna Sharan) several years ago. Her gorgeous and riveting, OF MARRIAGEABLE AGE, is a treasure to me, as it is currently (but perhaps not for long) out of print. I was delighted for the opportunity to read a new work of hers.SONS OF GODS: THE MAHABHARATA RETOLD is kaleidoscopic in its beauty and intricacy. The hurdle of the tale's massive scope has always daunted translators, and the difficulty of prising the right tone from an ancient grand epic to suit a modern and Western audience has relegated it to largely academic obscurity. What's saved it for us is that Aruna Sharan knows full well that love, betrayal, lust, envy, pride, devotion, and heroism never go out of style. SONS OF GODS is a literary soap opera with a soul that spans the full horizon.Love for the panoramic story itself and the patience of more than three decades of careful crafting has solved the literary puzzle of how to present it for an audience in the digital age. Aruna Sharan is well-suited in both talent and passion to deliver a new classic for lovers of mythology. The unique category of mythology also makes SONS OF GODS a clever fit for Amazon's Kindle publishing as a proving ground for its appeal. The price is incredible for a work of such excellence. Still, I hope for the day to hold it hardbound in my hands, as well. This isn't just a book, it's the Universe explained.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful. By william brown A most excellent novelization of what is probably one of the oldest books existent, and assuredly the longest epic poem in all of history. There's bits left out, and it doesn't go into the depths of metaphysical discussion one finds in such translations of bits of the story, such as the "Bhagavad Gita as it is" - by Swami Prabhupata- something not usually read by anyone outside the Krishna ashrams or a comparative theology course, so don't come looking for explanations for the magic, beyond the magic itself.

What’s worse than losing your job? How about losing your life, your home, and everything familiar? I just wanted to work. What did I get in return? A long fucking fall with a sudden stop. Stranded on earth with little hope for survival and an eternity of banishment ahead of me, I did the only thing I knew—I worked the jobs I could. Until I realized I’d been replaced. Then I got mad. Eleven thousand years of fighting for my destiny had me broken, bitter, and ready to just give up. And then my best friend blew up Fort Worth and screwed the entire universe in the process. Now I have to save his ass from everyone including the Guardians. I hate Guardians—those intrusive vixens replaced me, took over my job, and left me utterly useless. But this one, Lavinia, she’s almost as old as I am and she is starting to get under my skin. I can’t concentrate when she’s around—everything about her mystifies me and why the hell do I remember her from before? She shouldn’t even exist! And certainly not in my memory.

He considers his j By Barbara Chioffi Ambrose falls to earth with a definite thud. Relieved of his duties as an angelic worker, he is unceremoniously stranded with no help. He does, however, meet those along the way who prove to be of assistance. Ambrose is angry and bitter, but despite this, his true nature always shows through as he time and again without any expectation helps those less fortunate. He considers his unfulfilled jobs his mission, and only when his best friend blows up a major US city does he begin to see that he was never abandoned. This story begins one step at a time and picks up speed as the book progresses. There will be new life, death, happiness, sorrow, and of course, romance. This book covers it all, but the best is redemption. I fell in love with Ambrose as I know you will.Steady, excellent writing. Another hit for Jen Winters. 5 stars

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Masterfully written! By Scott Borgman Having read Kissing Demons, I was looking forward to reading Falling Angels, and I was not disappointed. While it's by no means necessary to have read Kissing Demons beforehand, it's a welcome return to meet up once again with some of the characters from that book.As other reviewers have already detailed the basic storyline, I will not retell what others have already said in that respect, but rather offer my own personal thoughts.First, the writing, the ideas, and the descriptions are extremely well done. The fact that once again Jen Winters writes in first person, this time through the eyes of the main character Ambrose, is done so flawlessly that it really brings a sense of being right there in the story, not as a bystander but as a participant. This is made even better by the little details, such as passing thoughts that would at first seem insignificant, but in truth make the story fuller and more complete... in essence, those little things are NEEDED. And Jen pulls such things off so beautifully writing in first person that if you've never read anything written in this point of view, Jen Winters is definitely one who knows the craft.Throughout the first half of the book or so the pace was steady, with some parts that at the time seemed almost out of place and had me wondering why they were there. Later on, when things really come together it all makes sense and had me quite literally exclaiming 'Brilliant!' out loud. And of course, reuniting with characters from Kissing Demons was one of the things I enjoyed the most... it was like seeing old friends once more after a long absence.Falling Angels was a return to the world Jen has created for me, and I was not disappointed. There's action, there's a LOT of emotional pull toward the different characters, and yes there's some sex in it as well. You can't have a Paranormal Romance without it! But it was never overdone. It was steamy and even hot in some places... but never to the point of being explicit.I can give no less than my highest recommendation for Falling Angels, and would add that reading Kissing Demons beforehand, while not needed, will make the story even more enjoyable... at least, it did for me.

It was a very interesting read, seeing Jen Winters take on how things were created and when and what the Angels were supposed to be doing and why the Thetas were created. How guardians came to be, how Yuruch's children came to be. There are some pretty unexpected twists in the story arc that just curl your toes for good and curl your toes in an "OMG" fashion. Watching the transformation that Ambrose goes through in this book was fascinating. His thoughts, feelings, moods, his desire to continue working even though he was fallen. It all really made this story cohesive and helps to understand some of the things that happened in the first book that I wondered about. I'm already anxiously awaiting the next book in the series, "Raising Hell." Yuruch's story definitely needs to be the next one to be told. Especially after what happened in this book. Poor Demon.RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M.Brennan.√

Here an attempt is made to detect psychopathy in all its danger, but also in its tragedy. Guggenbühl-Craig aims to help identify psychopaths, to protect themselves from them, and to understand their suffering. The author reviews the field, gives an explanation of the main symptoms, suggests an approach to treatment, and then presents a new vision: psychopathy is not so much a deficiency of morality as it is crippled Eros.

This was also recommended by others during that time. She had every secondary trait, almost as if she was the subject of this book. It sure as heck helped me protect myself. Highly recommended.

The author has given an amazing account of different types of psychopaths in the short, but oh so sweet, book.Guggenbuhl-Craig should write more books. His style is amazing- it is easy to comprehend and extremely intelligent.I applaud this book and its author. This is one of the best books on the subject I have ever read. Should get 10 Stars!!!

16 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Out of date with current state of knowledge, awkward read By Mike I was more than a bit surprised at the glowing reviews for this book. The awkward writing will tip you off that this is a translated book. And the absence of references or a bibliography reveals a lack of scholarly rigor. I was first struck by a statement on page 68, made with a degree of certainty that is neither warranted nor substantiated by research. Citing the work of Manfred Bleuler, he writes "They do not become psychopaths because their mothers reject them but the other way around." This `they were born defective' theory appears to be derived from his ex post facto observations done at the Burghölzli asylum in Zurich. It is significant to note that his theory dovetails nicely with the work of his father, Eugen Bleuler, a proponent of eugenics in Nazi Germany. (see International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine, 4 (1993) 133-148) Contrast this with the results of several psychological studies ("Becoming Attached", Robert Karen, pg 60)[...] Levy writing about adopted children who were deceitful and eerily detached; Bender reporting on psychopathic-like children who had been in a series of foster care and adoptive homes; Bakwin, Goldfarb, and Spitz warning about the psychiatric damage done to institutionalized babies [...] they unanimously found the same symptoms in children deprived of their mothers I did find some value in the later chapters, where Guggenbuhl-Craig details the symptoms and includes references to the "compensated psychopath." It was in the final chapters, though, where he discusses the Jungian concept of the "shadow" and how there is a bit of psychopath in all of us, that I found most compelling. Finally, I would caution that certainty in the field of psychological research will only come about when we can know the *complete* experience of a human being. Right now, most research (necessarily) relies heavily on the hearsay of caretakers. To claim objectivity from this group ignores the vested interest that they have in portraying themselves as loving and blameless.

Both men tried to shoot her then, and the two women were stunned at the speed with which she moved. Penny charged straight at the gunmen then dove under their fire. Spinning on her back she kicked the legs from under one man, and as he fell, she kicked the gun from the other man’s hand. Spinning back to the first man she saw the gun barrel moving toward her, and she lashed out with her foot. Her boot crushed his skull and she rolled to her feet to grab the last man in a neck lock. A quick twist and he lay lifeless in her arms. She let him fall, as, breathing deeply, she came down off combat mode. “Are you ladies all right?” she asked as she untied the ropes that held the older woman. “Who are you?” asked the old woman fearfully, as she pulled the tape from her mouth. “They call me Lady Blue,” smiled Penny as she helped the woman to stand. “What are you?” It was the younger woman who spoke. “Cold, hungry, dead tired, and covered in blue war paint,” giggled Penny as she released the older woman’s arm. She turned and began to search the bodies.

"Restrict 'evil' foods such as sugar, salt, saturated fat, grains, meat, and dairy." "Drink fluids beyond thirst, restrict calories below hunger levels, and exercise daily.""Eat unpalatable health foods like raw vegetables, chia seeds, and kale smoothies." Most of us have heard and used at least some of this advice from health and diet 'experts' to achieve our health, energy, and weight loss goals. But would you be so quick to follow their advice if you realized that it is based on short-term inconclusive science, bogus human history, and misunderstood human biology? The truth is that these 'diet rules' are (at best) nothing more than temporary band-aid solutions which only address superficial symptoms, but not the root cause. And ignoring your body's cravings, taste-buds, and thirst/hunger signals to chase these short-term results will lead to catastrophic long-term health consequences. In 'The Great Diet Deception' you will learn about how I destroyed my health by taking the advice of these so-called 'experts' and chasing short-term results. You will also learn the real root causes of ill-health that I eventually discovered through endless research and self-experimentation. Finally, you will learn how I fully recovered and achieved all of my health goals, and how you can too... by eating as much as you want and eating the foods that you love. Achieving great health, high energy levels, and a lean body is a lot easier (and more fun) than we have been led to believe!

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. ... all the diet rules to be healthy to have better cyclist performance By Jim King I am a competitive cyclist who followed all the diet rules to be healthy to have better cyclist performance. I drank lots of water, reduced salt, and ate lots of vegetables. I tried to minimize excess calories to stay lean. After years of progressively training hard and following the nutritional wisdom of the day, I experienced gut issues, felt chronically tired, had cramps during races and was sleeping poorly. After following the advice in this book I finally started listening to what my body was telling me. I began to eat WAY more, drank less water, poured salt on everything and ate way fewer vegetables. My GI issues quickly improved, I had more energy, slept better and stopped getting cramps in races. By listening to my body and not depriving it of what it clearly needed, it became much easier mentally to train hard. I followed other recommendations in this book and have noticed subtle effects from doing so but the big breakthrough for me was throwing away what I thought I knew about nutrition and trusting my body to guide me towards what I needed. I wish I'd come across this book years ago. The personal stories that the author had from experimenting with different diets was cool too. Solid book!

By Ray Gowlett The most fascinating story and informative book I've read in a really long time! As an athlete who got started in the weight focused sport of wrestling, switched to mixed martial arts, and now dabble in cycling (probably the most weight obsessive sport I've been a part of), I can personally relate to many of Zak's struggles. I have been a teacher for 15 years, currently teaching health, nutrition and wellness, and never have I encountered one book that does such a great job tackling all of the questions and apparent contradictions that I've encountered in the 'science' of nutrition. When it comes to nutrition, I don't believe there is a 'theory of everything', or 'one stop shopping'.....but this book is as close as I've found. If you've been stumped by food science and don't even know what questions to start asking, let alone the answers, make this the first book you read.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend this book to all the girls out there who handed their health to the devil of dieting illusion. By Courtney Such a refreshing read. It makes me deeply care about Zak's journey of finding his way back to a healthy body, because I can totally relate to him. Have tried so many different ways of dieting and almost all of them are some random people's random theories and of course none of them worked. The process of dieting is depressing and the facts they don't work depressed me even more.'Eating more calories', 'Eat more salt', ' don't over exercise' they sound counter-intuitive however they make so much sense after reading the thorough research and simple analogy. What I love about this book is it's focusing on longer term fitness and well being instead of short term weight loss at the expense of physical and emotional health. After reading this book I no longer feel guilty about satisfy my craving for salt and sugar and I started cooking my own meals, which make me a much happier person.Highly recommend this book to all the girls out there who handed their health to the devil of dieting illusion.
