Harold at the North Pole, by Crockett Johnson

Amazon.com Review There's nothing Harold can't create with his purple crayon--and that's just why children have loved his magical world for decades. Crockett Johnson wrote several other books about Harold after the original Harold and the Purple Crayon in 1955, each one tracing different themes--from Harold at the circus to Harold on Mars. This time the imaginative young artist takes his purple crayon on a search for a Christmas tree. He finds himself at the North Pole just in time to help Santa who is snowed in with his reindeer, his sleigh, and all the toys. Harold's purple crayon to the rescue! He draws his own solutions, solving both Santa's problem and his own. This would be a dandy Christmas gift wrapped up with a big pad of paper... and a purple crayon, of course. (Ages 3 to 6) --Marcie Bovetz

Ever since the publication of Harold and the Purple Crayon in 1955, Crockett Johnson's crayon-wielding hero has had a devoted following. This classic character's Christmas adventure, with its clever and inventive twists, will delight fans old and new.

Harold is a little boy with a round head (around long before Charlie Brown) with a little purple crayon and a big imagination. In the North Pole book, Harold has set out on Christmas Eve to find a Christmas tree. Along the way, Harold ends up helping Santa but needs to hurry to find a tree to have it ready for Santa's visit. The simple line drawings are wonderful for younger readers yet there is always a charm to them. Harold inspires kids on so many levels; he's great for children who are timid, he's great for the mighty little explorers and he's great for kids who like to draw but feel intimidated by other artists.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Harold Saves Christmas By Roz Levine It's Christmas Eve, Harold doesn't have his tree yet and he decides he needs one before Santa arrives. So armed with his imagination and his purple crayon, Harold sets off for the north woods to find the perfect tree. He follows the north star, encounters a blizzard, meets a snowman and continues to "draw" his way to the North Pole. There he finds Santa in trouble. He's snowed in and can't get his sleigh, reindeer and sack of toys out of his workshop, which is covered by drifts. Lucky for us, Harold comes to the rescue and lends Santa a hand, sending him on his way to deliver presents to boys and girls all over the world.....Crockett Johnson has created a simple, gentle and really ingenious story, showing the very clever Harold at his best. Those who love Harold and the Purple Crayon, will find this holiday adventure just as wonderful and inventive. Harold at the North Pole will delight and amuse all pre-schoolers, as he helps your youngster welcome in the holiday season.

But I like how the 2002 HBO series started and ended the story the same... The original books do not follow that same premise..."It was Harold's bedtime..." and "Harold dropped off to sleep and his purple crayon dropped to the floor."

By ltg584 I can’t say that I’ve ever been the biggest mermaid fan (although I do admit to knowing all the lyrics to Under the Sea) but I think I may be converted! This is the first book from the Falling in Deep Collection that I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last! Several of my favorite authors have paired up in this one, making it my most anticipated anthology in forever! In the end, my greatest regret was that this story wasn’t anywhere near long enough. Novellas rarely are, but in this case, the story will be continued in a full length novel, Salt. Scales really is just the tip of this story, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of it!The story starts off with Verona being exiled from their community for being a bottomfeeder, the lowest member of their group. Her options are limited, but she will be killed if she stays. Her dilemma reminded me of something Albert Einstein said: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Verona isn’t struggling because she isn’t smart. She’s struggling because she was told she isn’t smart. This is something that I think every reader will be able to relate to, and I think following her journey will feel very empowering.

Even this land of Mer has social circles this mermaid was seen as bottom feeders not an equal. Verona is of the lesser class and is continually picked on and abused as the upper class sees it as their right to do so. That is until one stands up and shows her kindness he helps her and tries to get her to believe in herself and learn to care for herself. Maybe even stand up for herself to stop seeing herself as everyone else sees her. As Verona takes on the waters alone she is left with a fight of becoming a land walker or staying a low class mer. She toys with the idea of both not sure which path to take and which one is the best choice.I loved the action and surprises that this book held. I liked how everyday life problems that we as humans go through was written into the life of a mermaid with a slight twist. As Pauline Creeden took me diving into the waters off of Bermuda she made this land walkers dream come true. As I love the water and to swim. I totally immersed myself and found a new love of the water. I am so looking forward to more from the land of Mer from Pauline Creeden in the near future.

MER-KIND DO EXIST By Mary Lou PagePrincess Hoffman Title: SCALESSeries: Scales #1Category /Genre: N/A, Paranormal RomanceRecommended for: 12+ mature teensReceived from: Pauline Creedan (in exchange for an honest review)Grammar/editing: ungraded – book received as an unedited ARC / errors excusedThis is a prequel in a new series. They will need to be read in order.I felt so bad for Verona (Her mother named for the city of Romeo and Juliet). She has been labeled as a bottom-feeder by her clan, meaning that she is not intelligent and/or too emotional. Because of this, she has been bullied since she was very young and is now subject to exile. To rejoin her clan, she would need to either spend a month on land returning with knowledge not yet known about the humans, or be claimed by a mer-man as his bride. Her father has filled her with fear of the land-walkers and it is very unlikely that anyone will claim a bottom-feeder. This leaves her with permanent exile as her only option, struggling between the fear of being discovered by the bullies, the sharks, or the humans. Now, imagine yourself being put to a similar test based on who you were at say 15 or 16 years old. Released from home with nothing more than the shirt on your back. You have no survival skills, no money, nobody to turn to for comfort, entertainment, or protection. How long would you last? What would you do?Though there were times that I was frustrated with Verona for not doing what I might do in the given situation, I was also filled with sympathy for her fears and trepidation. This isn’t my story, it’s hers. Her only respites are her visits with the wild horses of Chincoteague Island and stealthily watching soap operas through the back windows of Betty’s house. There is not a cliff-hanger, but I was still angry when I came to the end of the book. I have a burning need to know what happens to Verona. This is the first book that I have read from Pauline Creedan. I’m hoping I’m invited to read SALT when it’s ready.

The Fall of the House of West (Battling Boy), by Paul Pope, J. T. Petty

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Determined to find her mother's killer, Aurora West, daughter of hero Haggard West, has finally started to patrol the monster-infested streets on her own, despite the protests of her father and her mentor. While the first volume, The Rise of Aurora West (2014), in the prequel series to Pope's Battling Boy (2013, both First Second), was disappointingly more setup and character backstory than action, this volume instantly makes up for lost time. This installment is filled with numerous traps, shoot-outs, and interrogations. However, the book's greatest strength is in the moments between the chaos, as characters are wonderfully fleshed out. As characters slowly reveal their secrets, readers discover, along with Aurora, that the heroes she has always looked up to are cracked and bruised. Rubín's Robert Crumb-inspired artwork is a wonderful throwback to the Silver Age of Comics (1956 to circa 1970). Villains are grotesque and cartoonish, while the heroes have chiseled jaws and perfect posture. The illustrator's choices perfectly echo the themes throughout the narrative. Diagonal gutters and Batman-style sound effects not only add to the nostalgic feel but expertly move the action forward; readers will be flipping through the pages as fast as the bullets flying over Aurora's head. VERDICT The strongest series entry so far—one helluva read.—Peter Blenski, Greenfield Public Library, WI

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Family secrets By Alt Haggard West goes around killing monsters and his daughter Aurora is getting in on the family business. She’s obsessed with killing the monster she believes to be responsible for the death of her mother. She’s also obsessed with her imaginary childhood playmate who might not be imaginary. Haggard is trying to train Aurora in the cautious art of monster killing but Aurora is headstrong and wants to go off and kill them herself, which gets her grounded, but of course you know what happens next. The interesting aspect of the story, the thing that sets it apart from a typical action/adventure/father-daughter-superhero story, is a family dynamic involving the dark secret of Aurora’s mother’s death. There’s also an interesting lesson about what it takes to make a hero believe he (or she) is a hero. Most of the story is playful but the serious moments and the dark moments provide a nice balance. The art is cute, as if the monsters were inspired by Dr. Seuss.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Paul Pope didn't write or draw it, but it's still worth reading and a clear step up from the previous volume By S. Robert Katz This was much better than the first volume (The Rise of Aurora West). I actually think it pretty much makes the first volume obsolete. The script is still unspectacular, but it's a vast improvement over the previous chapter, which I thought was pretty flat and boring. There are a few really interesting sentences, which may seem like a weird compliment, but this was sorely lacking in the first volume. Most importantly of all, there's a central idea here that makes the whole thing worthwhile. It's basically telegraphed (not quite gracefully enough to be considered foreshadowing, unless I'm just an exceptionally astute reader) and there's a pretty major plot point here involving the death of the main character's mother that made me groan a bit, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying the payoff. I think the script was maybe a draft away from being just right, but I'm not going to knock it too hard for that. If you bought the first volume and come back for more, I can't imagine this leaving you disappointed. As for the art, it's solid, and the storytelling is clear, aside from a few clumsy action sequences. Some of Petty's lines, such as the energy crackles on the cover, strongly evoke Paul Pope. And there are some designs here that have Pope's fingerprints all over them. You won't get the same experience as reading a Paul Pope comic-- there's nothing like the original-- but his spirit is here. That said, his spirit is all the Paul Pope you'll find here. He created the universe, clearly he's done some (most?) of the design work, and there's no way of knowing how much of this he plotted out, but it's not truly a Paul Pope comic. I point this out because when you search Amazon for Paul Pope, this is the first book that comes up. I understand why that's the case and why he has top billing on this book, but I wouldn't want people to buy it expecting to see his work. They'd surely be at least a little disappointed, because he's one of the best in the business.I admit I felt a little bit burned by the first volume, which was pretty shaky and not very much fun, but it actually set the bar at just the right spot for this volume to clear it with room to spare. The central idea here is definitely strong enough to justify the effort. 3.5 stars.

I've been looking forward to this as I really enjoyed Aurora West's first book By Nicola Mansfield I've been looking forward to this as I really enjoyed Aurora West's first book! This is a continuation of the story as she concludes the search for the killer of her mother and continues training to be her father's sidekick and one day replace him. A rip-roaring adventure with lots of action, humour and fabulous art. Great characters return from the first book. But also quite a serious theme and heavy topic that deals with heroes having to believe in themselves, when to tell the truth versus when not to, and there sometimes being a right time to die and a right time to kill. Very deep, high impact from start to finish and a stand-out adventure with tough female leads.

By Dee Renee This is a very simple book. 2 books in one but very similar stories, just the roles are reversed. I purchased this book for a 3 year old boy. Boys love dinosaurs and I'm sure this will be a movie he sees. I want to see this movie with my daughter! Colorful pictures, engaging for children but not much of a story line. I would say this is a great book for children 3 and under, a big plus is this book came with stickers! What kid doesn't like stickers. This would be a good gift for a stocking stuffer or a beginner reader.

Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups, by Tadgh Bentley

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Goofy-looking Little Penguin has a bad case of the hiccups. It seems that they started the night he had chili, and now he needs help from readers. Breaking the fourth wall, hiccuping and talking directly to the audience, Little Penguin sums up what he's tried so far. His friend, Frederick, told him to stand on his head. Chester told him to drink backward from a cup. Albert suggested standing on his head while drinking backward from a cup. Total failure. So, Little Penguin appeals to the audience: "I NEED YOU TO SCARE ME." He asks readers to count to three and shout "BOO!" Unfortunately, the hiccups remain. This time, readers are asked to be even louder. "Will I have the hiccups forever?" laments Little Penguin. "SHOUT! GO CRAZY!" he tells readers. And with a big ROAR, aided by his friend Franklin the whale, the hiccups finally stop. They are so happy that they want to celebrate—with spicy tacos. This humorous title is illustrated in pen and ink and colored digitally. VERDICT Children will love the audience participation and the chance to get noisy during storytime. A fine addition for most collections.—Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A fun, frozen tale with beautiful illustrations By Michelle Wallar My 5 and 2 year old kids love this story. Little penguin has a problem--and the kids relate, because everyone in our family has had the exact same problem. What's better is not just permission, but a request to be as loud and scary as possible on the count of three. I had to perfect my fake hiccup and get my page-turning timing right, but once I did, the kids laughed hysterically at the persistent problem and the surprise awaiting the little bird. A delightful debut by author and illustrator Tadgh Bentley.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic! By Skippy We have been patiently awaiting the release date of this book for months, and it most certainly did not disappoint! Immediately, my 7 year old began reading it to her younger brother! We love how interactive it is! They tried their very best to help rid Little Penguin of his pesky hiccups! They read it several times, each time interacting more and more with the story! "1-2-3 BOO!" After all, Little Penguin can't get over his hiccups without a little help from the audience! This is a beautifully illustrated and charming story that children will beg to have read again and again! It is fantastic, truly the best children's book that we have come across in a very long time! It is dearly loved!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Must have for story time By J.Prather Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups is a gift to any story time leader looking for fun, interactive books for preschoolers. With a text that flows along in a wonderfully conversational tone, we get to meet a young penguin with impeccable comedic timing. Let's face it, hiccups are always funny, and when you throw in a little guy that loves chili and tacos, well you just can't go wrong. A spirited reading will result in plenty of laughs and a fully engaged audience! The artist's illustrations are totally charming, with this big eyed little penguin carrying the story with ease. He is full of personality, and with some truly inspired design choices, the artist manages to convey just the right amount of energy for this wonderfully funny tale. Little Penguin Gets the Hiccups is a MUST have for story time and an enthusiastic recommend for any preschooler.

I’ve been playing and reading articles about Minecraft but this is my first time to read a Minecraft diary. This book is obviously so fun to read. The pacing of the story is just right. The dialogues of the characters are so exciting. I like the braveness of Steve. The journey to destroy the Ender Dragon and the Dark Son is so thrilling. I cannot wait to know how the battle ends on the next diary.

It's a very interesting story and it has a lot of thinking in it. Nonetheless, the little ones will definitely enjoy it and you can also read it to them, even before sleep. This is a fairy tale about love, the love of a Ghost for the House he lived in. After years of living in the beloved house, the Ghost is driven away by wizards and priests. After being driven from his House, the Ghost leaves to go to Forest, to seek another house on the other side. In the Forest he is transformed into a girl named Solana. While traveling, she meets jolly forest people, who are embodiments of different psycho-types. All of them had their little oddities, which was the reason she didn’t manage to make close friends with any of them. The Forest was divided into two parts - light and dark - at the end of the dark was an abyss, from which one could not get out alive.

I was not sure when I read the first pages that it might be a book I would like but it drew me in and captivated me with it's unusual story. In the midst of this mythical story and it's characters, are truths and advice for us to use in our lives today. It is story with wisdom given to us in an unusual way. I do not know this author but I suspect she has an intuition within her that inspired the advice of the characters. I liked this book and the creativity of the author..

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very interesting By Elizabeth E. Long Very interesting. It was difficult for me to get into as it was not what I was expecting. Once I realized this was a light versus dark; good versus evil, I could understand how the mind works. It was a very enjoyable book and I would recommend it, but the reader needs to keep an open mind.

When Survivors came along, I didn't know if it would be good at all.But then I heard so many great things about it. Once I started reading, I was hooked. It was great! The characters are so well developed, you can tell with a lot of them what Spirit Dog is theirs just by reading a few sentances. My favorite characters so far are Arrow, Mickey, Snap, Storm, and Wiggle.I suggest this book to Warriors Lovers, Passionate People, and Dog-Lovers. Atleast try a chapter or two. The beginning is a bit complicated, but unravels as you read on.Like I said, Great Book!!!!

Join Isabella Treehorn, her brother Kaelyn, Uncle Titus, and the crazy Witch Grace with the dragon Tianlong as they race against time to find Ling Ling, Tianlong’s mate in the frozen regions of Mongolia and the Himalayas. Isabella is a simple girl of twelve with mixed heritage and who has trouble fitting in her school. Her mother on her death bed gives Isabella a family heirloom, a Jade stone amulet with unbelievable powers of Chi and telepathy. But with that fortune the necklace also brings death to every other generation of the Treehorn women dating back to her ancestors in the Ming Dynasty period. Ancient Demons the Lords of Death put a curse on the first princess for her wicked ways and have killed off most of the princess’s descendents. The princess named Dalyn was protected by Tianlong and Ling Ling and escaped before the demons could kill them as all the other dragons in the kingdom. Tianlong teaches Isabella about the powers of the amulet and her destiny as they go on their perilous journey against the demons and a power hungry team of Paleontologists in this exciting adventure.

Maras 3 STARS FOR AUDIO5 START FOR STORYMy dyslexic middle school son discovered The "Map to Everywhere" while we were at the book store and we purchased the Audible Audio Book edition so he could listen to the audio while he followed along in the book. He has read the "Map to Everywhere" multiple times and was very excited about "City of Thirst".The "May to Everywhere" Audio edition read by John Glouchevitch was done fantastically. John brought great life to the characters with his story telling. As is often the case with a series audio the narrator often changes from book to book. "City of Thirst" is listed as being narrated by Pat Young but is actually narrated by Pat Young and Casey Holloway. In theory having two narrators would be a great way to present this book as each chapter alternates between the view of the two main characters. In practice this narration diminishes the delivery of the story. If you listen to "Map to Everywhere" and move directly into "City of Thirst" the characters immediately feel like different character. John Glouchevitch gives the main character Fin a charming accent that is not continued into "City of Thirst" by the new narrators.I understand that a new narrator cannot exactly mimic the voices of a previous narrator but Pat & Casey don't even follow each others delivery on the characters. The most noticeable example of this is how they deliver Ardent's lines. Each chapter the narrator switches and it sounds like you are listening to two different audio books. My last complaint is specifically on Pat Young's narration. Casey, and John both say 'the Been There Map to Everywhere' and Pat continuously pronounces it as the 'BenT There Map to Everywhere'.Carrie Ryan & John Parke Davis have written a tremendously enjoyable story, unfortunatlythe delivery of the audio presentation really takes away from the quality of that story.

By Stacy Renee City of Thirst is the delightful return to the Pirate Stream and all the worlds that it connects. This wonderful adventure will take you on a joy ride that you will not soon forget!Having been home from the Pirate Stream for six months, Marrill never expects to find herself back in that world of worlds. The wizard, Ardent, had said it would be nearly impossible and if the Pirate Stream ever touched her world again, it would mean that it was in danger. So it was a surprise when she found a stop sign with the words "YOU ARE NEEDED ON THE PIRATE STREAM MARRILL" scrawled across it. Followed by her babysitter, Remy, she attempts to get back to the stream the same way she got there the last time in 'The Map to Everywhere'. Before she knows it, they are both swept up by the stream in Remy's car and end up back on the Enterprising Kraken, a ship manned by pirats, the Ropebone Man, and Coll, it's captain. Reunited with Ardent, the Naysayer, and her best friend Fin, Marrill tries to figure out why she was brought back to the Pirate Stream, what that means for her world, and what, of all things, is the 'Iron Tide' and how will it affect them all?I was thrilled to continue this story. 'The Map to Everywhere' was my favorite read of 2015. It is fun, imaginative, and one heck of an adventure! 'City of Thirst' is just as fun and unique and takes us on an even more pressing journey. I highly recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a fun fantasy adventure. While I loved this book just as much and maybe even a little more than 'The Map to Everywhere', there were a few little things that didn't work out so well, in my opinion. For most of the book I really didn't see the point in the babysitter being there. I thought maybe she was included because people sometimes hate to see that most middle-grade stories are about children who are either orphans or just 'away' from their parents and go on dangerous adventures. Everyone wonders where the parents are! And since Marrill's parents are in the hospital and Fin actually is an orphan, I thought that maybe they included a babysitter so it was a little less "kids on their own". And then towards the end, it made a little more sense why she was there but the reason still irked me. Now this isn't going to be 'spoilers' but I'm going to say why. Remy was there to make sure Marrill knew that Fin was her 'plus one', as Remy called him. But why did she need to know that?! In 'The Map to Everywhere', Marrill was the only person that ever remembered Fin at all. And all of a sudden, she starts forgetting him. And the reason was not satisfactory in my opinion! And a little something else that sort of bothered me: I was really looking forward to this book being about Fin finding his mom. The first book was basically about Marrill finding her way back to her sick mom and I was really just hoping that Fin would get the same. But nooooo! We are given a little clue in a girl who shows up and then disappears. We are left with this open-ended question of what will happen next. Cliffhanger? Well no, not really. Goodreads does not show any other books in this series. At least not yet. I'm REALLY hoping that they continue with this series since there is so much more than can do with it and we are left with questions. I guess I will have to wait impatiently for any news of it being continued.

I really loved the first book in the Map to Everywhere series and this book was even better. I just absolutely loved all of the adventure and magic in this story. The waters of the Pirate Stream are touching our world again and Marrill remembers that if the waters ever touch our world she will need to return to the Stream to stop something bad. So Marrill re-enters the Pirate Stream along with her babysitter to find the source of the Iron Tide and prevent disaster from striking her world. Marrill finds herself reunited with Fin and the Kraken crew on a journey to the crazy world of Monerva...a world no one can seem to leave.I continue to really enjoy the creative premise of this book and all of the wonderful and interesting characters throughout. There is some spectacular world-building here; I love all the parallel worlds and the idea of a Pirate Stream...basically a stream of magic. I also really enjoy the Map to Everywhere that is an incredibly powerful piece of magic that can take you anywhere you want to go.The characters are very well done. Marrill’s babysitter joins the crew in this adventure and she was extremely fun to read about. I especially enjoy the friendship between Marrill and Fin (a boy that no one can ever remember). In this book we finally find out why Fin is always forgotten and it was incredible to learn that back story. There are some truly creative and awe-inspiring scenes in this book. I loved the city built on a cliff that is eternally falling and people are eternally building their way up higher and higher to prevent falling off the bottom. It was just very imaginative and way these scenes are described really made them come alive.Overall I absolutely loved this continuation of the Map to Everywhere series. There are some incredibly imaginative and amazing scenes in this book that make every page a surprise. I love the characters and really enjoyed the premise as a whole. There is so much interesting magic and adventure throughout. I would recommend to those who love fantasy full of magic and adventure. This is a great book for anyone middle grade and older.
