Long ago a wood sprite lives alone on the Maine coast. He wonders why he is unique and what lies over the distant horizon. With the help of his best friends, a bear and a porpoise, he travels inland to peaceful blueberry barrens, to an immense rock in storm tossed seas, and a seductively pleasant tropical island. In the course of his travels he learns much about the world and himself from a bold fox, a well-traveled sea bird and a wise old Iguana. He returns to his home in the Maine woods where he encounters a beautiful but elusive fairy princess.

Beyond the Horizon by Allan Hoben By Barbara Slayter Beyond the Horizon by Allan Hoben is a charming story with characters sure to delight both the listening child and the adult who is reading or telling the tale. The story is set in Maine on Cape Split, and the central character is Thime, a wood sprite who lives in a wood and stone house under the spreading branches of an old hemlock tree, and likes nothing better than "sitting on his doorstep and warming himself in the morning sun". However, thanks, in part, to two close friends, Tud, an old black bear, and Thor, a "worldly porpoise", he ventures forth from his home and has many adventures, indeed. These adventures lead him to the company of Hailu, a venerable old fox, Wilson, a storm petrel, and other inhabitants of the coast of Maine. Like many who are rooted in the character and landscape of their beloved home, Thime is also curious about what is "beyond the horizon." Eventually, thanks to Thor, he makes his way to the Caribbean Sea where he meets a golden haired "creature -of-the-sea" named Circe, who utterly intrigues and almost captivates him. Indeed, Thime has gone way "beyond the horizon" and its enchantments are obvious. Will he remain under the charms of Circe? What will become of his deep friendship with Tud? When and where will he find the fairy princess Eleni? Will he ever return to the "snug home under the hemlock" on Cape Split that is so dear to him? These and many other questions will captivate the reader and those who are listening to the tale. Of special interest is the love of flora and fauna on Cape Split that is conveyed by the author throughout the book. Allan Hoben has an observant eye and is attentive to the changing beauty of the landscape from the "clusters of red berries hung on the witch-wood" to the "sunlight filtering through the trees, illuminating a patchwork carpet of mosses" or "the colorful mushrooms, nibbled by spruce grouse, now brown." Much of the prose has a lyrical or poetic quality shaped by the author's affection for Maine's natural beauty. This unusual characteristic is supplemented by many stunning color photos of birds, plants, landscapes and seascapes, allowing the reader and the listener to visualize in their own heads and hearts the appearance of Thime and the other characters. Last, it is a delight to contemplate the atmosphere in the cottage where the author - by candlelight, kerosene lantern, or firelight- conjured up the bedtime stories for his daughters. These imaginary creatures, residents of the woodlands and coastal landscape in which the family was ensconced, must have brought them great pleasure as they settled down for the night in this magical place, Cape Split.Barbara P. By Marilyn Margulius With wonderful writing skill, Alan Hoben shares his amazing knowledge and love for the land and sea animals of Maine. "Beyound the Horizon" engages us in a romantic fantasy world where all the species care for and speak to one another with the nicest of manners, hospitality, kindness and believe in true love and marriage.>>A desire for adventure and travel takes Thime, a wood sprite, from Maine to South America on the back of a his dolphin friend Thor,. But, after awhile, Thor takes him back home again to Cape Split Maine and his dearest friend, Tud, the bear. Tud found Thime in a meadow all alone. He was the only wood sprite he had ever seen. Since it seemed that Thime had no family at all, Tud took him home, cared for him and brought him up.>> If you have been fortunate enough to visit Maine, it's Islands and even Cape Spilt, this book will re-awaken all of it's visual beauty, it's familiar land and sea animals, and it's forest and sea scents. If you haven't been to Maine, you will want to go.>> This is a delightful story to read to your children or grandchildren a few pages at a time. They will love the imaginative trips under the sea to it's deepest depth, and the encounters with fairies that live out in space near the moon and come to earth once a year to dance and celebrate without gravity. Thime's fairy friends never age or die. They live on happily ever after. As a 75 year old, I am enchanted with that concept!

As bedtime stories they delight and fascinate children and help them to feel secure in a rational world. At the same time they inspire their parents to ponder their own life which is not so very different from that of the animals that populate Cape Split.Like human beings they have personalities and emotions which range from friendship and love to fear. They are concerned about survival in an environment that may shift from beauty and peace to fury and overwhelm in spectacular disoplays.A creative plot development ensures the interest in a narrative focusing exclusively on the natural world that surrounds us, from the cold northern regions to the tropical islands in the south. The rich and varied vocabulary combines with admirable observations of nature, with the inclusion of literary reminiscences, and culminates in a glimpse of a land beyond the horizon. While the children dream of a fairy land, their parents may be moved to search for their own land beyond the horizon.Professor of literature, languages, and linguistics EmeritusIngrid LotzeEagle Hill Institute
