In Addiction: From Suffering to Solution Dr. Joseph J. Bradley, M.S., D.C., DACACD shares the heart-wrenching and compelling story of his own daughter's journey through addiction and eventual recovery. He then presents his in-depth knowledge of the genetic component of the disease of addiction, brain chemistry and the reward process, codependency and enabling, the treatment process, the miracle of recovery and relapse prevention.

Addiction directly or indirectly affects everyone, yet it is still shrouded in ignorance and shame. Addiction: From Suffering to Solution seeks to eliminate much of the stigma of addiction and helps us view addicts from the same place of love, understanding, and compassion that we view any other disease-afflicted person. Drawing back the curtain on addiction, Dr. Bradley helps us understand the hows and whys of this ugly disease, and presents practical tools for getting clean and sober, and staying that way.

Addiction: From Suffering to Solution, by Dr. Joseph J. Bradley

Review

I have worked in the behavioral health field as an administrator, clinician and educator for over forty years. This book is the most comprehensive, sensible and understandable treatise on addiction, treatment and recovery that I have encountered. Dr. Bradley strikes a balance in addressing the behavioral, biological, familial, individual and societal aspects of addiction.

Addiction: From Suffering to Solution is a ''must read'' for individuals suffering with addiction, their families and behavioral health professionals. It is my hope that the academic community will incorporate this book in their core curriculum in the training of future behavioral health and medical professionals. The general public will also benefit from reading this book, for, as we all know, Everybody Has a Direct Connection to Addiction. --Michael R. Adams. L.C.S.W. VP & Director of Clinical Operations, Solutions Recovery, Inc., Las Vegas, NV and former Vice President of Clinical Operations of Behavioral Healthcare Options in Las Vegas, Nevada

Effective new tools for the addiction treatment community are scarce, of high value, and in great demand. Addiction: From Suffering to Solution is one of those tools which will prove invaluable and have a wide range of appeal. It is the best primer I've seen from the Integrative Holistic Recovery approach.

With a deep understanding and explanation of the core biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of both addiction, treatment and the recovery process, Dr. Bradley provides hope for any reader that a full and complete recovery from addiction is not only possible, but promised to those who attend to this wisdom.

Dr. Bradley writes from both first-hand experience and the most well-informed integrative perspective of addiction and recovery currently in publication. This book is excellent for the individual, family, employer and especially those of us in the professional field of addiction recovery. His perspective on the spiritual dimensions of recovery provides great hope for our community on the deeper meaning of 12-Step spirituality, and the healing journey this pathway provides for any individual, and for our communities.

I have known and worked with Dr. Bradley for many years and I consider him to be one of the brightest minds in this field. His understanding of the relationships between all four bio/psycho/social/ spiritual dimensions of the recovery lifespan is unsurpassed. I highly recommend Addiction: From Suffering to Solution for individuals and families suffering the pain of addiction, and for the students interested in this specialized field. It is also of great value for us in this field who deeply understand the healing that is required and available to treat and recover from addictive disorders of all kinds. --Dr. Donald Posson, Ph.D., LADC Head Professor, Alcohol and Drug Counseling program for National University and former Regional Lead Faculty, MA-Counseling Psychology program for National University, HQ in San Diego, CA.

Groundbreaking comprehensive presentation of the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of both addiction and recovery. Required reading for all ACACD students.

-- Jay M. Holder, D.C., CAP, CASAP, DACACD, American College of Addictionology & Compulsive Disorders

Bottom line, this book will save lives. Buy it, read it, give it away.-- Joan McCraw, MSN, FNP, APRN, Clinical Specialist in Psychiatry, Las Vegas, Nevada --Reviews

As a professional in the field of mental health, this book was by far the best I've read on the disease of Addiction. Dr. Bradley explains this horrific disease and the affects it has on the addict as well as family members using facts backed by science. This book has been written in a way that removes shamed based thinking regarding addicts and their disease and places the emphasis on the physiological components of the disease itself. It also identifies with family members and helps them identify the role the disease plays in their lives. I have personally had the opportunity to see Dr. Bradley transform families and save lives of those affected deeply by this disease. It truly is an amazing gift he has been afforded. This book is a TRUE resource for addicts, family members, educational institutions and professions who are impacted directly or indirectly by the suffering this disease creates. It also gives hope that there is a solution to managing this disease and having a happy, healthy and sober life.

I am currently a chiropractic patient of Dr. Bradley's. For over two decades prior to meeting him, I was opiate dependent in order to combat debilitating low back pain. The effects of pain pill addiction can range from nasty to hellish. Thanks to Dr. Bradley's expertise in addictionology and chiropractic care, I no longer have to contend with a nightmarish existence. "From Suffering To Solution" does a great job in explaining the 4 major aspects of the addiction, treatment and recovery process. I found its contents to be an integral part of my recovery. The wording in this book is articulate and as a result, very easy to follow.

By Alex C An incredible and inspirational journey through addiction, recovery and a solid education about what addiction really is. This book has been an incredible resource to my recovery and provides valuable insight into the disease of addiction. Dr. Joseph Bradley captures the heart of addiction into one easy to read guide about what addiction is all about. I have read many books on recovery and have yet to uncover a better understanding from every aspect. I hope that many more share in this truly inspiring story and manual looking into this horrible disease.

I have got to be honest here, I am not usually a fantasy fan - but Sig grabbed me and pulled me in! I so enjoyed this book! Y. Pushkin did a fabulous job of taking me to Sigs world and I completely got lost there! I planned on starting the book and finishing it over the weekend - but I had to keep on reading! I can not wait for more of these wonderful adventures! Congrats Author Pushkin! What a fantastic debut novel.

A Young Boy's Adventure By Christy King A young teen adventure with magic, comedy, and a touch of young romance. This story tells like a campfire story with a touch of fairy tale. As a young boy discovers that his family has been hiding secrets of great power from him, he finds a romantic friendship with the girl next door. Together, they come into their own and grow to learn some intriguing realities.A rollicking tale with a family cat that keeps stealing the limelight!I recommend this adventure for any kids looking for a fun adventure!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good Young Reader Story By Jeanette Walker Sig Woods makes a great story for younger fantasy fans. We start off with an average teenage boy. he lives with his scientist father and baker mother. The girl next door is his first real crush, and he's not sure what to do about her. What Sig doesn't know is he possesses supernatural power. The story follows Sig along his adventure to finding the Book of Elements. Be patient there's a lot of back story that goes on before the venture actually takes place. He and Ellie, the girl next door, both find they have a special connection to nature. Sig is in tune with the Earth and Ellie with water. Together, with the help of their magical mentor Dietrich, they go in search of the book, hoping to find it before the bad guys do.This would make a book for older kids, tweens, and early teens. If your reader was fond of the Percy Jackson series, this might appeal to them. The language is very G-rated, and there are no graphic issues to deal with. Giving this to your kids isn't going to raise any uncomfortable questions. As an adult reader, this is a quick book for those short lunch breaks. No one looking over your shoulder can complain. It is my understanding that there will be a re-edit of this book. This may or may not include extra material I was not given as a part of my review copy. As of now, I can safely say this is a young reader gift. I give it 3 stars.

OK for Pokemon Fans, But Confusing for Everyone Else By ReviewerWhoPrefersToBeAnonymous (The 14 reviews prior to this had 88 words total, for an average of 6.3 words per review. If you want a more detailed review that has more words than all the other reviews put together, read on.)The book is a bit disconcerting because it jumps back and forth between stories about Ash (a "ten-year-old boy on a mission to become a Pokémon Master") and facts about Pokémon. For example, pages 4-9 contain a short story about Ash's first meeting Pikachu in Professor Oak's laboratory. Then pages 10-31 describe a couple dozen people (or types of people) in the Pokemon universe and a dozen Kanto Pokémon. Then pages 32-35 have a short story about "How Brock and Ash Became Buds." And so on. There is no index, and the organization of material is semi-random (as opposed to alphabetical), so the book's usefulness as a reference work is limited.Although Pokémon fans may like reading about Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos, the book is likely to be confusing to everyone else. Non-experts wanting engaging stories can turn to Pokémon Adventures (7 Volume Set) and the like; those wanting facts might pick up a book such as Pokémon Deluxe Essential Handbook: The Need-to-Know Stats and Facts on Over 700 Pokémon. Overall, three stars.

Jump Into the Blue: A True Story, by Ms Christina Lavers

About the Author I am a writer, an artist, a creative enthusiast, and an inner world explorer. I was born in Montreal Quebec Canada. Now I live with my life partner and son in a rainforest pocket in the hills behind Coffs Harbour, Australia. I spend my time playing, creating, growing and sharing. My journey has been about personal alchemy ... exploring the mysteries of my soul and my environment, and learning to bring all aspects, the light and the dark, together with the transcending ingredient... love. The more I uncover and nurture the wounded aspects of my being, the more whole and grounded I feel and the more my outer world reflects the magic, wonder and love I have discovered inside. Jump Into the Blue represents a period in my life where I first began to open to subtle energies both within and without. It was an intense period that radically changed the way I view, and move through, the world. This journey did not finish at the end of the book. I think it might just be an eternal work in progress

By Francie Nolan Last night, up late and unable to sleep with a broken little toe, (given the pain, who knew it was such a mighty thing?), I was in dire need of a compelling read. I downloaded Jump into the Blue and all I can say is Wow! What a wild ride this author went on. And she wrote the book so well, it was an effortless pleasure to read.I read a lot of non-fiction paranormal-books. At first, I thought this would follow the usual storyline of a demonic or negative energy coming through a Ouija board. That would have been fine if it had gone that way, but it didn't. Instead, it segued to other paths the author sought or stumbled upon to access other energies or dimensions or the unseen reality behind this one or whatever you want to call it. I could not predict what would happen to the author from one chapter to the next. It kept me on the edge of my seat (and made me forget my wittew toe.)She also portrays the adventurous traveling life of a young person, which is vicariously fun. (She sure has a lot of guts!!!) She meets new people in other countries and describes the various lifestyles and places in a picturesque way. Sometimes, her life sounded a lot like the hippie world of The Sixties, which is my favorite era. The William Blake quote at the beginning of the book refers to the doors of perception which, as I recall, was The Doors inspiration for calling themselves The Doors, and an apt reference for the author's own experiences. (Break on through to the other side!)I like, too, that in the end, the author did not try to wrap up all her otherworldly experiences in a simplistic little bow. Some things in life are a mystery and I, for one, like it that way.

While reading an article by the author (I think it was on Wake Up World, can't remember for sure), I was intrigued when she mentioned she'd had a transformative spiritual experience which was detailed in the book Jump Into the Blue, and I followed the link to Amazon. I downloaded the free Kindle version and read it on Kindle Cloud reader over the course of a couple of days. Last night, intending to read only for a couple of hours, I stayed up until 2:00 am reading even though I needed to get up early. I only stopped and went to bed because I lost internet connection. I see from other reviewers that I'm not the only one who couldn't put it down. I'm grateful that Christy was willing to share her experiences, because it can be difficult to learn more about these aspects of reality, partly because there is such a stigma. I've had only a small taste of this in my own life experience, but enough that I want to know everything. The high quality and lack of pretention in her writing is something really rare and special.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. and we share in her exploration of some of the mysteries in her life in such an intimate and authentic way that we cannot deny t By Natalie Mannering Real life is so much more interesting than fiction, and Christina's deeply personal journey into uncharted realms proves that once again. It is a layered story told from the heart and from the inside out, so that we get to know the author well, and we share in her exploration of some of the mysteries in her life in such an intimate and authentic way that we cannot deny the possibility that there is much more magic and synchronicity in our individual and collective existence than we are comfortable with. She takes on our conditioned lack of imagination with such sincerity and in such a disarming way that we are forced to examine our own failure to take more creative risks in our own lives, and to reassess the inexplicable and wondrous incidents that are too often dismissed and taken for granted.

Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine, by Laurie Wallmark

From School Library Journal Gr 1–4—This well-written and handsomely illustrated picture book biography details how Ada Lovelace Byron was able to write the first computer program more than 100 years before the first computer was built. Ever since she was a young girl, Lovelace was fascinated by numbers. As she was growing up, she filled her journals with ideas for inventions and equations. Her mother provided tutors to further develop Lovelace's passion for mathematics. When one of these tutors invited Lovelace and her mother to a gathering of scientists, she met the famous mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage. He was so impressed by Lovelace's knowledge that he invited her to his laboratory, where she learned about his idea for an Analytical Engine, a mechanical computer that would solve difficult problems by working them through step-by-step. She realized that this "computer" would only work if it were provided with detailed instructions, and after much work, she succeeded in writing what is now referred to as the first computer program and in creating the profession of computer programming. The descriptive text and dazzling spreads work seamlessly to provide a sense of Lovelace's growing passion for mathematics and invention. The illustrations reflect the 19th-century setting and contain numerous supporting details. For example, gears that will eventually become part of the design of the Analytic Engine are featured throughout: in the corners of the title page, on the pages of Ada's journals, and on Babbage's chalkboard. VERDICT An excellent addition to STEM collections.—Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York

Review What a fascinating story! This vividly-written, gorgeously illustrated picture book biography brings to life the personality and amazing accomplishments of the astonishing 19th century female mathematician who conceived of the idea of computer programming long before there were even computers and is literally the "mother of computer science." I can't wait to share it with my students!— Carol Simon Levin, Youth Services Librarian and Historical Impersonator of "Fascinating Women History Forgot""I've been an admirer of Ada Byron Lovelace for years and a book that introduces her to young readers is long overdue. While women are tragically underrepresented in computer science today, the true pioneer of the field was Ada, whose mastery of numbers and determination led to her making a permanent mark. Let's hope that this wonderful book not only delights, but inspires many girls to pursue Ada's ideals."— Steven Levy, author of Hackers"The story of Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine is a page-turner and will appeal to children, adults, scientists, and non-scientists alike. This book begins to fill the gap in the literature about girls and women in mathematics and computer science. The harmony of thorough research, beautifully written prose, portrayal of theory, practice, romanticism, and passion that accompany the creation of a complex scientific invention were wonderfully woven together, just like the mechanics of the "Thinking Machine" itself. I was reminded of the excitement of becoming a mathematician!”— Ellen Gethner, professor of computer science and mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver"Meet Ada Byron Lovelace in this fascinating tale of the world's first computer programmer. Beautifully detailed illustrations bring Ada's world to life for young readers."— Kathy Haug, Association of Children's Librarians of Northern California"This enchanting book brings to vibrant life the biography of Ada Lovelace, a girl who loved numbers and dreamed up the world's first computer program before computers existed. By rescuing Ada's story from the overbearing shadow of her famous father, poet Lord Byron, Laurie Wallmark and April Chu provide a valuable role model for all young women destined to pursue careers in math and science."— Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity"Two hundred years after her birth in 1815, the world is finally beginning to pay attention to Ada Byron Lovelace, considered by many to be the inventor of computer programming. Computer scientist and debut author Wallmark introduces her subject as a child fascinated by numbers, lucky enough to be born to a geometry-loving mother with the means and inclination to nurture her daughter's talents. She focuses on her subject's adolescence, choosing details that highlight Lovelace's d evelopment as a mathematical genius. The girl sketches models for flying machines, works endless calculations to compute the wings' power—young readers will sympathize as they hear how "writing for so long made her fingers hurt"—and studies a toy boat to see how minute adjustments to its sails affect its speed. A bout of measles that leaves her temporarily blind and paralyzed serves to further hone her brilliance, as her mother drills her with math problems. She is perfectly positioned for her fateful meeting with Charles Babbage, whose proposed Analytical Engine prompts her to write the algorithm (described as "a set of mathematical instructions") that becomes the world's very first computer program. Chu's illustrations, digitally colored in a deep, jewel-toned palette, accompany the lively prose. Lovelace is a Pre-Raphaelite beauty set against a backdrop of teeming Victorian interiors littered with diagrams and pages of figures; children will enjoy spotting the girl's loyal cat. A splendidly inspiring introduction to an unjustly overlooked woman. (author's note, timeline, bibliography) (Picture book/biography. 5-8)"— Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Wallmark makes her children's book debut with an inspiring and informative account of 19th-century mathematician Lovelace, who is considered to be the world's first computer programmer. Lovelace's mathematical passions are evident from the first pages, as Chu shows the infant in a bassinet, reaching for a mobile of stars and numbers (she's adjoined by her mother, whose own interests earned her the nickname "The Princess of Parallelograms," and her father, poet Lord Byron). Wallmark moves swiftly through Lovelace's life, facing obstacles that included a bout of measles that temporarily left her blind and paralyzed, as well as societal attitudes toward women in the sciences. Lovelace found a kindred spirit in inventor Charles Babbage, eventually creating "the world's first computer program" for his Analytical Machine. Chu brings the same grace and precision to this book as she did to In a Village by the Sea, and her finely detailed pencilwork is ideally suited to the schematics, blueprints, and mechanical implements that surround Lovelace and Babbage as they work, not to mention the stately apparel and architecture of their Victorian surroundings."--Publishers Weekly, STARRED review"Laurie Wallmark has written an exciting tribute worthy of this amazing woman. The vividly written narrative reads like a story and keeps you turning pages. The illustrations by April Chu are gorgeous, and perfectly complement the text.An author's note and timeline at the end of the book give more details about Ada Lovelace's life and work."--Wands and Worlds Reviews"Soft, delicate yet detailed illustrations evoke Ada’s wonder and accomplishments, with a final spread depicting a spacecraft—a flying machine come true—running a computer language called Ada in her honor. Back matter offers more information on Ada’s life and the world’s first computer program. A beautiful tribute to this female computer pioneer."--Booklist, STARRED review"This picture book is a visually rich peek into Victorian high society, an inspiring tribute to the life of the mind, and a fine introduction to Ada Byron Lovelace, a lesser-known pioneer in the field of computer science.Discover: A visually stunning picture-book biography of Ada Byron Lovelace, a 19th-century English mathematician whose ideas contributed to the invention of the modern-day computer."--Karin Snelson, children's and YA editor, Shelf Awareness"Wallmark brings the story alive with grace and clarity; she never showboats, but she always finds the right word or phrase. Chu's vivid illustrations tell a story unto themselves, one of both mathematical precision and romantic flights of fancy. The image of Ada's sketches flying off the page is particularly arresting. A great choice for girls who love math or science."--Chicago TribuneEureka Gold Medal Winner for Children's Nonfiction--California Reading AssociationBooklist Top Ten Books in Science and HealthBooklist Editor's Choice: Books for Youth 2015Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12 for 2016, National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the Children’s Book Council"Ada Byron Lovelace’s fascinating, overlooked story is just beginning to get the recognition it deserves, and this handsome picture-book biography does it justice. We meet the daughter of Lord Byron, the famous Romantic poet, as a young girl besotted by numbers and encouraged to pursue mathematics by her mother, who loved geometry. A bout with measles leaves her blind and bedridden, but she uses the time productively: “Mama posed ever harder problems, and Ada solved them all.”When she recovers and later meets the mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage — who has plans for a “thinking machine,” his Analytical Engine, but hasn’t actually built it — Ada’s destiny is set in motion. In her debut picture book, Wallmark manages to create an atmosphere of suspense as she clearly lays out the steps Ada took to come up with the first algorithm that could allow a machine to solve complex math problems. The digital art by Chu (“In a Village by the Sea”) adds to the story’s intellectually riveting quality, making Ada and her refined world look somehow both pre-Raphaelite and cool."--New York Times"The combination of Wallmark’s passionate text and April Chu’s superb bold illustrations make this book stand out from the pack. Children will appreciate the fact Chu included a playful cat in the illustrations, adding interest and continuity from page to page.Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine is likely to resonate with kids interested in computers, math, and engineering and inspire some who haven’t yet found their passions. History buffs, particularly those interested in women’s history, will also want to check it out."--Nonfiction Monday Best Fiction for Children & Teens"This beautifully illustrated biography introduces future programmers to the life of Ada Byron Lovelace, the child of Lord Byron, who loved inventing things. Your little one will get inspired as they learn about “The Princess of Parallelograms” and how her passion for math and science as a child led her to become the world’s first computer programmer."--Today's Parent"This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Ada Byron Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron the poet, and how she grew up fascinated by numbers and what she could make them do. When she was bedridden by measles, her interest in mathematics grew even more.. When she became a young woman, she meets Mary Fairfax Somerville, a well-known female scientist and mathematician. Through Somerville, Ada met Charles Babbage, who had invented the first computer/calculator. Though Babbage continued to develop the mechanics of the Difference Engine, it was Ada who figured out how to program it in a way that made it more efficient. We live in a world where math heroes often fly under the radar, and where most elementary children have never imagined that a female mathematician could make a difference in t he world -- let alone in the world of the early 1800s. Math teachers who care about their female students should thank Laurie Wallmark and April Chu for creating this book, then they should immediately order this book for their classroom. Right away."-- Bill Boerman-Cornell, professor of Children's Literature and Disciplinary Literacy, Trinity College, Illinois"The 510s shelves are hardly in danger of collapsing under the weight of children’s books about women mathematicians, and librarians will welcome this picture book biography of Augusta Ada Lovelace, whose assistance to Charles Babbage resulted in what is credited as the first computer program. Wallmark offers a smooth narrative that blends the human-interest details of her life—the absence of her famous poet father, the influence and support of her mathematically gifted mother, her tempo- rary blinding and paralysis from measles—with the importance of her own work, particularly her invention designs and the algorithms she wrote that would theoreti- cally enable Babbage’s Analytical Engine to function. While Lovelace’s achievement gets the spotlight in the main text, Wallmark acknowledges in a closing note that her accomplishments were hidden from most contemporaries behind the cryptic “A.A.L.” with which she signed her work. Wallmark also effectively explains the mathematical innovation in simple terms, stressing Lovelace’s knack for breaking down complex tasks into orderly steps, which would enable machines to perform complex calculations more easily and quickly than a the most nimble person armed only with a pencil. Chu’s illustrations, “colored on an Analytical Engine,” are occasionally stiff, but they’re an intriguing mashup of Pixar-style polish and romantic Victorian detail. An appended timeline, which hints at further landmarks of Lovelace’s adult life, may encourage readers to seek out more information via the bibliography; a note on Ada Lovelace Day should spark celebratory activities, especially among the STEM girls, in October."--Recommended, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"This well-written and handsomely illustrated picture book biography details how Ada Lovelace Byron was able to write the first computer program more than 100 years before the first computer was built. . .The descriptive text and dazzling spreads work seamlessly to provide a sense of Lovelace’s growing passion for mathematics and invention. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. it does better round out Ada’s life and offers more sense for ... By A. N. Blount Originally reviewed for YA Books Central: http://www.yabookscentral.com/kidsnon...This book is essentially a 40 page illustrated biography, suitable for children ages 6 and up. Offering a bit of childhood background to help set the stage, it brings to life the true story of how the estranged daughter of a famous (and infamous) poet became a mathematical visionary—became one of the founding influences to modern computer programming. The obvious female-empowerment potential aside, the story also contains an inspiring emphasis on persevering in the midst of physical disability. With no orienting date given for Ada’s birth, parents may feel the need to expand on parts of this book with a bit of independent research. The transitions toward the beginning are somewhat choppy, but successfully convey the passion Ada felt for the idea of a flying machine just before her debilitating bout with measles. But the childhood background isn’t accompanied by her specific age during various events. The first mention of her age occurs halfway through when, at 17, she is introduced to the inventor Charles Babbage. Her collaboration with him is certainly the highlight of the story—relaying not only a friendship built on a mutual understanding of the numerical, but the fact that their significant generational gap made her thoughts no less respectable to him.The book mentions that Charles Babbage never finished building his “Analytical Engine,” and so Ada never got to see her program run. Unfortunately it isn’t explained why Babbage didn’t finish, and the way it wraps up so quickly after divulging this may feel a bit unsatisfying to some readers.I would advise reading the Author’s note at the end. Though the text there is dense and unfortunately doesn’t offer any imagery, it does better round out Ada’s life and offers more sense for when and how her contributions were eventually recognized post-humorously. Also there it mentions that Lovelace had to use a pen name to hide her gender, as was common in those times. All things I wish could have made it into the book itself. The artwork is nothing short of stunning. April Chu illustrates Ada’s life and experiences with warm use of color and exquisitely high detail. She manages to capture both a feel for the era, and a lively range of human emotion.“I am never really satisfied that I understand anything, because, understand it as well as I may, my comprehension can only be an infinitesimal fraction of all I want to understand.” – Ada Lovelace

This delightful children's book is a great hit with my six year old daughter By chenoameg This delightful children's book is a great hit with my six year old daughter. She had heard of Ada Lovelace through scientist paper dolls, but this story made her come more vividly to life. The pictures vividly portray Ada's active and creative imagination, and make the math and computer science come to life. The extensive discussion of her childhood makes it easier for children to thinking about math and programming like Ada did.

Although the ending I'm sure is true, it was a let-down. For a book that should inspire girls this starts out very well, but ends on a bit of a flat note.

Roses are red, Violets are blue. If a ghost can write books, Why not greeting cards, too?

The bestselling trio from Spence Mansion is launching a greeting card company called Greetings from the Graveyard. But what kind of card do you send to an ex-girlfriend who threatens to publish the love letters of Ignatius B. Grumply? And what do you send when the town of Ghastly is rocked by its first crime wave and two escaped convicts are on the loose? If you’re Olive C. Spence, you send for your old butler, T. Leeves, who arrives just in time for tea—and trouble!      Told in generously illustrated letters and newspaper articles, the 43 Old Cemetery Road books are a visual feast perfect for kids who love series like Big Nate and the Dork Diaries but with a ghostly twist.

No matter how old she gets this series from Kate and M. Sarah Klise is still on her top 5 list. She has read and re-read all of them. From the moment we read the first one together (she was 8 yrs. old) and I explained the play on words she was hooked. What a joy these books have been. Please Kate and M. Sarah keep up the great work.

Times when a Hallmark just won’t do. Maybe you need a ghostwriter. Fortunately, the world’s most unusual family, residing at 43 Old Cemetery Road, are here to help. Our beloved Ignatius B. Grumply, his wife and ghostwriter Olive C. Spence and their son Seymour Hope have opened a sideline business, “Greetings from the Graveyard”: “Send one along when everything goes wrong”.Of course, nothing is ever easy for the trio. What with Iggy’s long lost ex-fiancé, Nadia S. Richenov, coming back into the picture and those two escaped cons, Robb Z. Lott and his wife Liza, on the loose. In times like these, you might be in need of a security system, and fortunately new Ghastly residents, Ben and Mia Bizzy are on the job. This installment’s cast of characters is rounded out by appraiser Art Smart, Olive’s former industrious if intrusive butler T. Leeves and the return of Iggy’s old publisher, Paige Turner. Demand for those cards is going to be high.As is standard for this series, we encounter more twists and turns than a Dan Brown book, all packed into about 160 pages of richly illustrated letters, newspapers, text message printouts and other assorted written communications. And once again the Klise sisters have hit it out of the park. I first encountered this series with Book IV, THE PHANTOM OF THE POST OFFICE, and was so hooked I immediately got the first three books to catch myself up. Whether you are new to the series or an old friend, you won’t be disappointed in this latest episode of the lives (and deaths) of some of the most original and enchanting characters in children’s literature.

The Most Inspired Bit of Lunacy Launches a Greeting Card Company By FredTownWard Having absolutely loved the first five books in the 43 Old Cemetary Road series: Dying to Meet You, Over My Dead Body, Till Death Do Us Bark, The Phantom of the Post Office, and Hollywood, Dead Ahead, I had little doubt I would love this one, and I was not disappointed. As our story opens, the writing team (and family) of I. B. Grumply, Olive C. Spence, and Seymour Hope, residing in the old Spence Mansion at 43 Cemetery Road, Ghastly, IL, are confronting a problem not all that uncommon to the rich and famous: someone out of their past come forward to try to cash in on their success. In this case it is Nadia S. Richenov, the woman a young Iggy asked to marry him 21 years ago, whose proposal she "turned down like a bedspread". In the midst of writing Nadia a letter telling her off in no uncertain terms, Iggy is interrupted by Olive objecting to the rudeness of his letter. Iggy wishes there was a greeting card for occasions like this, and Olive is inspired to launch a greeting card company that writes and illustrates custom rhyming greeting cards for sticky situations not covered by standard greeting cards: "Greetings from the Graveyard".Meanwhile, a married couple of escaped convicts, Rob Z. Lott and Liza Lott, neither the first, the last, nor the worst of the soul crushing puns contained herein, have launched an unprecedented crime spree in previously crime free Ghastly, IL, that is simply beyond the capabilities of Sheriff Mike Ondolences (I warned you) to deal with. Worse, a determined Nadia S. Richenov has shown up in Ghastly, intending either to marry Iggy or blackmail him with the threat of publishing all those embarrassing love letters he wrote to her. Meanwhile, Seymour Hope is trying to figure out how to earn enough money to buy Iggy a great gift for his first Father's Day, and Olive C. Spense is getting worried enough about the crime wave (The portrait of her hanging in the Spense mansion dining room, the one whose eyes appear to follow you around the room, was recently appraised at $5,000,000.00, and it made the local news.) to request the return of her former butler T. Leeves,...despite the fact that he died before she did, which leaves the problem of contacting him among others, but if you can send "Greetings from the Graveyard",...?Chaos and hilarity ensue, and once more the gimmick of having the story told entirely through written communication works fairly well.I shall be eagerly awaiting the next volumes in this delightful series, soul crushing puns and all.

Race Car Count, by Rebecca Kai Dotlich

From School Library Journal PreS-K—This charming race car story reinforces the concept of the numbers one through 10 in rhyming text. It begins, "Race car 1 honks, Look at me!/He zooms in front with the turn of a key." Each car in the story is a different color and style reflecting its unique personality. A visual winner, the illustrations are brightly colored and drawn in a cartoon style that will appeal to fans of the "Cars" movies. The text is clear and simple and conveys the fast-paced story. Cars overcome rain, a pile-up, and even chomping gators in this race. But the fun does not come to an end quite yet. At the end of the race, they line up to do it all over again. At the back of the book there is also a page called Meet the Race Cars! In addition to each race car having a separate picture, there is other "vital" information. For example, race car number 9, named Comet, loves milk shakes and collects hubcaps. VERDICT This popular transportation-themed book is sure to be a crowd pleaser.—Robin Sofge, Alexandria Library, VA

My twin boys love quizzing me about - who is #6 - Derby, what does he like to eat - Mac& Cheese. A fun book that they love to read

Wonderful first counting book for young race fans By J.Prather Race Car Count is a wonderful counting book that will hold great appeal for young racing fans. Michael Slack takes that whimsical touch that gave Monkey Truck such charm and uses it to create a group of 10 race cars that are loaded with personality. His illustrations are filled with so much energy that this book just races by. In a book filled with wrecks, oil slicks, engine trouble, and loops, it's hard to take your eyes off the pictures long enough to worry about counting the cars. The text is spare, making this a perfect choice for toddlers as well as preschoolers. The rhyme rolls along without a hitch as its energy perfectly complements the illustrations. Each number is highlighted and over sized to aid in number recognition, and with the exception of the spread featuring car number 10, all cars are available for counting on each two page spread. The final two pages highlight all 10 cars lined up in a row and ready to race again, creating an excellent number line for some of the best counting practice to be found this side of the race track. It's not often you find such an effective counting book that is also a fun read aloud. Since this one does not feature the number word, and only counts up to 10 and not back down, this is best recommended for early counters and race fans of all ages.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. fun By Melissa Sack This is an entertaining short picture-book that will delight preschool aged children, especially those that love cars.We recommend this book because kids will love the pictures and the story line is too cute! It's a great way to sneak in a little learning about counting, colors and ordinal numbers. The pages are made of a heavy paper that will hold out for multiple library check outs!

The sex references, drinking and violence have been toned down to about a PG-rating so it's probably appropriate for most kids who have been allowed to watch the movies. I read it to a four year old, but in our house we're OK with heroes killing bad guys.I expect the others are similar but I'm using them as prizes for reading milestones so we haven't gotten to them yet. That said, the set is beautiful, and though the books are the size of paperbacks they have sturdy casewrap covers. If he hadn't already seen them I'd be using them for Christmas presents.

We were going to buy it at Barnes and Noble, but the price was a ton more than Amazon. Great books for early readers. The stories are excellent and challenging, but not too difficult. And the set is just really nice in general. We will holding on to these to pass down through all our kids.
