About the Author Patrick Withrow (June 13th 1990-Currently Completing Life) was born in Frederick, Maryland. When he was twenty one he went into the hospital due to an abscess in his big intestine. After multiple incisions, 2 blood transfusions, and 14 inches of his intestines were surgically removed he went from 185 to 135 lbs. in 20 days. To Patrick this was a blessing in disguise because prior to his surgery he never felt like he had 'meaning' and he was too scared to follow his dreams. Normally diet books recommend a particular diet or hammer the fact that you ‘just need to do it, bro’. And while those are good approaches to an extent, they don’t focus on the core problem of overweight people: eliminating bad habits. This book shows that losing weight is a lifestyle, rather than a short term project so it shows that you need to cultivate weight loss habits. This book helped me to lose around 3 pounds, which is a lot for me considering the fact that I am struggling losing weight for a long period of time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'm glad I found this book. By Nicol This could be the weight loss guide that I've been looking for. Losing weight is always a struggle for me, and I am always on the lookout for some extra help. The strategies are some of the simplest that I've seen, but sometimes simple is best as complicated techniques take too much time and effort to sustain over time. The discussions on mindset and mental preparation ("Motivation To Win") really inspired me, and the "Simple Strategies That Work" made me realize that there is hope if I am consistent with applying them. I'm glad I found this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read! By Aya Dawson This book came as a pleasant surprise and made me realize that I didn’t need to break my back and bones or starves myself. This read gave me some additional motivation and enhanced my level of thinking on being consistent with my specific goals to lose weight. What I liked most about this book is that not only the habits themselves are explained, but you are also taught how to apply them. All in all a very concise and helpful guide for everyone who wants to lose weight and improve his health.

Would you be willing to fight for your dreams?

Fifteen-year-old Archer Keaton has the ability to enter and explore his dreams. He is a Dreamtreader, one of three selected from each generation. Their mission: to protect the waking world from the Nightmare Lord who dwells beyond the Slumber Gate. But as Archer’s dreams become more dangerous and threatening, so too does his waking life.

In this fast-paced conclusion to the exciting fantasy trilogy, the dream world and the waking world bleed into each other when a rift is formed between the two. People in the real world suddenly find their waking lives resemble their wildest dreams. Now it’s up to Archer and his fellow Dreamtreaders to race to reverse the rift before too much damage is done and to battle Archer’s ex-best friend, Kara, who sits on the throne of the Nightmare Lord. Kara is building an army of her own. Will Archer be strong enough to stand against her?

The Conclusion of a Fast Paced, Contemporary Fantasy, Ideal for Reluctant Readers By The Artist Librarian Wayne Thomas Batson burst onto the publishing scene ten years ago with the "Narnia-esque" novel, The Door Within and quickly established himself as one of the top Christian Speculative authors for middle grade fiction. While I don't think this is his best work (in my opinion, that goes to his Pirate Adventures books), War for the Waking World concludes a fast paced, contemporary fantasy trilogy, ideal for reluctant readers. The primary reason I categorize this novel as being for middle grade reluctant readers are the chapter lengths. Similar to Jennifer A. Nielsen's Ascendance trilogy, each chapter is no longer than ten pages. Much like the Ascendance trilogy and other general market novels aimed at reluctant readers, the story is tight, fast paced, and has lots of action. With the merging of our world with the Dream realm, it's not just Dreamtreaders and Lucid Walkers that can create things with their minds, but ordinary people as well. Not cognizant of this power, what some conjure up in their dreams or nightmares come to life in the real world, producing chaos akin to Mr. Stay Puft (a.k.a. the marshmallow man) from the cult classic Ghostbusters film and that of a more wicked variety.Because of the quickened pace and shorter chapters, I felt that Batson's character development was a bit weaker compared to some of his previous work. I personally struggled to connect to characters because none of them really stood out to me. It seemed like I got to know the characters and their motivations at a basic level, receiving depth when only relevant to the plot or story. However, this could be because I am not in this novel's target group.Despite this, Archer is a likable protagonist. He has faults and struggles like any 15-year-old boy and I loved his relationship with his siblings (I'm a sucker for older brother characters). Kaylie, his prodigious younger sister, was my favorite character - adorable, precocious, and yet with mannerisms to remind you that she's still 8-years-old. I won't discuss other characters as not to spoil, but there is enough character development for a satisfying story.I highly suggest reading the first two novels, Dreamtreaders and Search for the Shadow Key, to fully understand what's going on --this isn't a stand alone novel! With an intriguing premise and solid world-building, young readers might enjoy this trilogy with allusions to spiritual warfare and a subtle faith-based thread or worldview.Content notes: Typical fantasy violence --especially in the first two novels, some scenes are kind of intense when you think about what's happening, but since most of it happened in the "dream world" I give it a pass, but it did give me pause. Nothing graphic, but I'd describe some of it as psychological torture (though it's never seen).[Disclosure: I received a copy of this book as a member of the Litfuse Blogger Program for review purposes.]

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Had a difficult time connecting with this series By MeezCarrie I have mixed feelings about the Dreamtreaders series.I do think the concept for the series is wonderfully creative – a young teen is part of a very select group of people set apart for a specific purpose, defeating the Nightmare Lord before he can wreak havoc on the Waking World. Let me be the first to assure you; this isn’t some cutesy, mamby-pamby dream villain either. The dude is evil. The other villains that pop up over the course of the series are just as evil … and they must be stopped – with greater urgency as the books progress. By War for the Waking World, and after several surprising and imaginative twists, we are at critical mass. The spiritual analogies are subtle, much like Narnia or LOTR, but they are clearly present. I love finding parallels and deeper meanings when I read speculative fiction! Besides the obvious themes of good and evil, there is a distinct emphasis in book 3 on the manipulative nature of our enemy as well as his role as our accuser. And just for good measure, here’s my personal favorite message in War for the Waking World – avoid television, read a book. Seriously. You never know when it might save your intelligence. :)On the other hand, I just couldn’t stay engaged. Dreamtreader (book 1) drops you in the middle of action already in progress and doesn’t explain what’s happening. In fact, I wondered briefly if either a) I had mistakenly assumed this was the first book or b) there was another prologue somewhere that my copy was missing or c) Archer was playing a video game. Slowly, the pieces began to come together, but I didn’t like being confused and left without answers. Unlike Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia or even the LOTR books, there was no “fish out of water” character that needed the back story explained (well, except me). And the narrator wasn’t sympathetic to my predicament. The result? The author left the readers to catch up on their own, which in my opinion can lead to needless frustration, confusion, and disconnect. Each book begins this way, building off the previous ending, so readers really do need to follow the series in order.Additionally, the characters seemed flat and I frequently found myself irritated at their lack of reaction/emotion to the situations in which they found themselves. Along those same lines, the narrative also felt flat. It tended to tell me details rather than showing them to me, though I do feel that this much improved in War for the Waking World.Bottom Line: Overall, I think that the Dreamtreaders series would be an excellent choice for children who fall into the older elementary through middle grades age brackets. They will enjoy the geared-for-their-level humor and writing style and will be able to identify easily with the main and secondary characters. I hesitate to recommend the series for adults; I just don’t feel it will hold their interest. On the other hand, reading the books together – parent and child – would be a wonderful way to incorporate the series into a family library.(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review.)

Dreams are coming real and devastation is sweeping the world. It is up to the Dreamtreaders to stop it. But, when the devastation seems to disappear and everyone is in some hallucinative state where they can't see what is true and Archer is up on charges for misusing his Dreamtreader gifts, repairing the damage might be harder than they thought. Yet, help is found, in some of the most unlikely sources.Personal Opinion - A really great ending to the series. I even didn't mind 3-5 pages of resolution after the major battle (I usually like a few more pages of rap up after the major event at the end). I think the best part was the change of the characters. Archer didn't just get away with the wrong he did in the previous books but took responsibility for them and even Kara and Rigby ended up being complicated characters by struggling with greedy wants and hurts and yet not completely evil. Makes if more realistic and challenging in this way. Something I personally found while reading it was an allegory to life. The people only say the good they wanted to see, were unwilling to see that they was trouble and danger, it being covered up by a Veil. I think our would, and even ourselves, can be like that. We try to ignore the unseen costs of our actions and want to believe in what see only. The only trouble I had with this book was at the beginning. For some reason, I had trouble connecting the last thing from the previous book to the beginning of this one. I'm not really sure how to explain it. There wasn't anything wrong with it, I just seemed to be going "What's going on here?" It took a little while for it to come back together again. Anyway, a good ending to a thought provoking series (one of which I still need to read book 1. Read this series in order. That would be helpful).Disclaimer - In exchange for an honest review, I received this book for free from the publisher through BookLook.

Beginning with prehumans running down prey, this book describes how ancient, medieval and modern runners have come to run ever faster. Writers of antiquity left few detailed accounts of running but in the early 1800s detailed accounts of running feats and matches appeared in newspapers, journals and books. Nineteenth century pioneers like George Seward, Harry Hutchens, Walter George and Bernie Wefers are here given long-deserved recognition. The six-day Go-as-You-Please races of the 1870s and 1880s--featuring running's first great female performer, Amy Howard--are discussed.

Twentieth century luminaries Helen Stephens, Jesse Owens, Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek, Bob Hayes, Abebe Bikila and Joan Benoit-Samuelson are included, along with the Bunion Derby races of 1928-1929. New material for this revised and expanded second edition includes coverage of the 1970s running boom, women marathon pioneers, the impact of drugs on running, and the feats of 21st century runners such as Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie.

Inspiring, thoroughly researched, great illustrations By Molly Upthegrove Not previously a runner myself, I found this book at my local library and checked it out on the recommendation of the librarians. From the first chapter, on early physical adaptations that make humans uniquely suited for long-distance running, to the last chapter, on modern running achievements, this book is well-researched, well-written, and sprinkled liberally with practical, charming illustrations. Sears examines Greek literature and early 20th century newspapers for exceptional running times and significant anecdotes, and later includes interviews with the foremost runners of the last 50 years or so.What I find most impressive about the book is its ability to convey the author’s love of the sport. Sears writes of running with an eloquence and respect that reminds me of Carl Sagan’s tone when he wrote about science, and I feel convinced of running’s place in humanity, just as Sagan convinced me of the role of science. The last chapter includes a section “Running Is for Everyone” and a quote from Sagan himself, “The open road still softly calls. . .”. I’d be surprised if anyone can read this book and not feel that call. This is one of those rare non-fiction books I'll reread every couple of years because, like the open road, it gives me a feeling of freedom and joy.

For all runners and fans it’s an excellent read for understanding the evolution of running By Gary Corbitt This is one of the most important books ever to document the history of all running disciplines. For all runners and fans it’s an excellent read for understanding the evolution of running. It’s a must read for those interested in sports history as the book is masterfully documented with book and report bibliographies, plus illustrations that future scholars will find invaluable.I was most impressed with the wealth of information prior to the Pedestrian Era (6 day Go-As-You-Please Races) of the 1870s and 1880s where professional run/walk races were the biggest sporting events in the United States. I’ve read John Cumming book “Runners & Walkers” and Walter Thom “Pedestrianism and this book goes even deeper with early running history insight. The following selections from the book will give you a glimpse of the book thoroughness:Improvements in Timekeeping Make Running Records PossibleThe Mile – Origins of a Classic FootraceSir John Sinclair’s 1806 publishing “A Collection of Papers on the Subject of Athletic Exercises”The advent of handicap sprint races which gave competitors of varying abilities equal footing in a race.Course measurement was unreliable prior to 1880 making it hard to judge performances. This issue continued to be a problem in road racing until the 1960s.A.V. Hill’s 1925 paper entitled “The Physiological Basis of Athletic Records” concluded that even pace running used the least energy and was the best strategy for setting records for races longer than about 50 seconds.Beyond the Marathon – Arthur Newton and the Bunion DerbyEmil Zatopek – The Beast from Prague1954 the AAU commissioned the AAU Study of Effect of Athletic Competition on Girls and Women.Vladimir Kuts – The Relentless RussianBuddy Edelen – A Forgotten HeroAbebe Bikila – First of the Great East African Distance RunnerBobbi Gibb – First Women to Run the Boston MarathonIs Track & Field a Dying Sport? Included in this section is a chart showing the declining times Track & Field athletes appeared on Sports Illustrated covers. From 1960 – 1969 S.I. covers had 25 Track & Field athletes, while from 2000 – 2014 there were only two covers.Three favorite items I learned were as follows:John Taylor in 1908 became the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal.John Woodruff was never beaten in a half mile race from 1937 – 1941.Armin Hary had a method to his legendary speed out of the starting blocks.Thank you Mr. Sears for this fine work. I trust it will inspire the next generation of running scholars to continue documenting running history. Sears leaves readers throughout the book with a number of questions requiring further research in documenting running history.Gary CorbittCurator: Ted Corbitt ArchivesApril 3, 2016

Great Resource for Sports Scholars By Dahn Shaulis Ed Sears' Running Through the Ages is a painstaking work about running of all sorts imaginable. It's a great present for running buffs of all ages and an excellent source for sports scholars. His compelling story starts with the anthropological and physiological aspects of running--before the dawn of human beings--and leaves us with the incredible achievements of men and women distance runners, ultra distance runners, and sprinters today. Sears reviews the performances of people many know (e.g. Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph, Steve Prefontaine, Carl Lewis, Paula Radcliffe, Usain Bolt) and those very few people know (e.g. running by Egyptian kings, women smock racers and pedestriennes of the 18th and 19th century who defied myths of female frailty). The book is not just about individual runners, but also about great duels and controversies (cheating and drugs throughout the ages). This second edition includes significantly more information and analysis--as well as a wealth of priceless photos and illustrations. The book is also more international in flavor, and includes the performances of men and women across the globe. (Dahn Shaulis, Ph.D. author of "Pedestriennes: Newsworthy But Controversial Women in Sporting Entertainment.)

True Murder Stories And Accounts Of Incredible Murder Mysteries From The Last Century

Unsolved Mysteries, a famous show which started airing in 1987, continue to feature many stories of unsolved cases from missing persons, murders, wanted fugitives, and paranormal phenomena. Each episode, featuring 4 to 5 real-life cases, is aimed on publicizing the stories so that witnesses could come forward and report what they knew. With the show’s success and good intentions, it was only natural for the crew and staff to receive letters of admiration and gratitude. However, in December 1993, Unsolved Mysteries received a strange post card. The letter from an anonymous person went like this: “Forget Circleville, Ohio. If you come to Ohio, you el sickos will pay.” In the end, it was signed, “The Circleville Writer”. Despite the warning, the letter only seemed to have fueled the interest of Unsolved Mysteries, so they dug into what was really in Circleville and found out more than what they bargained for. Imagine if you had to wait decades for a crime to be solved: when the murderers are already dead and when the victim’s loved ones have already lost so much, will there still be satisfaction? For the police, Cold Cases could be considered a failure, but for the families left by the victims, it’s heartbreaking. They have to live their lives day in and day out knowing that something didn’t add up. The cases in this book still perplex the minds of not just the police and the families, but also those who are familiar with the events.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Too Much Blood for Me By Anne Wingate My problem with this book is that I am a former CSI. I have seen too many murders and cleared too many cases. I'm now 72 and I've been away from murder for a long time. I downloaded several books about murder cases and found them depressing. I'm sure that people who haven't seen as many murders as I have would find this book fascinating. The first murder I saw, two days after I became a cop, was the stabbing death of a young mother. It did not become a cold case; her husband was found two blocks away sitting on the curb crying. Her baby was crying in the room where the mother lay, and everybody was afraid to go into the room to get him. I handed him across the floor to his grandmother. The young mother had bled dry; the knife, a short blade of a pocket knife, had hit her breastbone, corkscrewed, and gone straight into her heart. She bled dry. You cannot imagine how much blood was on the floor. That was my introduction to murder. This book brought those memories back. I'd rather not remember. That is my own reaction, not a comment on the book's quality.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Too short By Kindle Customer This book seemed to be an interesting read, but only 4 chapters, great if you have 10 min to spare, but disappointing otherwise.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Atrocious writing, interesting information By B. Mckee There are some pretty incredible stories in this book. The times and types are greatly varied, and some of the cases are yet unsolved. I was unfamiliar with most of them, so it was interesting to me.I have read this author's work before, and it is difficult to follow, as if maybe English is not his first language. Perhaps he will engage an editor or proofreader, thereby making his work more readable.

Michael is a young man in modern England, minding his own business in the local library. Life turns on its head, however, when he has a powerful dream, full of symbols and foreshadowing. After awakening the next morning, he is compelled to seek answers of his dream: a quest that soon draws him into the beautiful and magical land of Aylosia. In an unfamiliar world with frightening creatures chasing him, threats against his life from all sides, and no way of knowing who he should trust; Michael must learn to face truths within himself in order to gain the power to save those he has grown to love. With plot twists and turns, wisdom literature that will make you ponder, and a story that is both tragic and triumphant, Dreams and Shadows is a story that will linger in your mind long after you have finished reading. Dreams and Shadows is a story of magical powers and strange creatures; of love, betrayal, despair, and ultimately hope. It is the first book in the new series, the Aylosian Chronicles. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hold Up, Hold Up! We have a male lead in young adult! By AlysonSerenaStone Book: Dreams and ShadowsAuthor: Jeffery CollyerRating: 3 Out of 5 StarsI would like to thank Jeffery Collyer for providing me a free copy of his book in exchange for an honest review. I am so sorry, but this is probably not one of the best reviews that I have written. I am trying to get caught up.The first thing I noticed right away was a lot of detail in very, very long paragraphs, without any dialogue. The details were so long and some of them really were not all that important. I found myself skipping over paragraphs, because they just were not necessary. The characters' back stories all just seemed to be randomly stuck in places. It really just felt like I was being told what was going on instead of being shown. Maybe break the long paragraphs up with some dialogue or something. I'm not saying that it was bad, but it was just a little bit too much for me. It just seemed a little dry. Now, the actual storyline itself was not actually all that bad. It kind of reminded me of The Mortal Instruments. I really don't know why, but the just nature just seemed to be so much like the Mortal Instruments. Going to new places, being questioned, it just all reminded me much of The Mortal Instruments.I really do think that most people will find something to like about this book. For me, I just liked the setting of the book. It was dark and it just had something that drew me in. The characters were also very strong and there was a healthy balance of male and female characters. What really stood out for me in this book was the fact that it was told from a male point of view. I cannot stress what a big deal this is in young adult. So much of young adult is centred around the girls and it does turn off boys from reading. I never really thought about this until I got interacting with some of male students. They did not want to read stories about girls; they wanted a strong male character to look up and this book does have that. To me, this is far more important than my issues with the long details.Again, the long detailed paragraphs, for me, took away from the storyline, but what up was the fact that we do have a male lead in young adult. I think that this is a good prompting tool and will draw in the readers, especially the males.Anyway, not a bad read. It is a very quick read, but I think that it just does need a little cleanup. Maybe try to find someone who isn't a picky as me with writing.

By Andy.P I love a good portal fantasy as much as the next guy, but this one had a few things that made it less than great.Let's start off with the first bit: the real world setting. Michael is like any other guy his age, but the first few chapters are as bland and boring as I've ever read. There was very little to make me want to keep reading until he made it into the world of Aylosia. Also, it's not explained AT ALL how he gets to the other world. (Or, if it was, I missed it). When he reaches Aylosia, he transitions to the new way of life and new world a bit too easily. I'd expect a bit more culture shock, all things considered. The bones of the story were excellent. The world in which they live is intriguing, the magic system is interesting, and the main characters (Michael and Aneh) were fairly well-developed. However, it's a classic "villain for villainy's sake", and the other characters were a bit two-dimensional.There were A LOT of unnecessary scenes in the book, with a whole side story arc that seemed less important the more I read. There were no highs or lows, and the one HUGE emotional moment seemed a bit milquetoast. There was only one real surprise at the climax of the book, but overall, it was a pretty straightforward fantasy of "good vs evil".The story may have been good, but the nitty gritty (grammar, structure, syntax, flow, pace, punctuation, etc.) was pretty flawed. The world-building is a bit annoying, with large chunks of information on landmarks and landscapes. Overall, the story could have been trimmed by 25% of sheer word count without losing anything. That being said, it's a decent story. If you can look past the things mentioned above, it was an enjoyable read and could be the beginning of a great new series.

Slow but satisfying By Amazon Customer In Dreams and Shadows, Jeffrey Collyer takes his main character, a young man named Michael, on a long, arduous journey, and us right along with him.For years, Michael has lived with the feeling that he doesn't quite belong. Then, one day, he is transported to the land of Aylosia, a land fraught with dangers that seem to follow him wherever he goes. Caught in the middle of a centuries-old conflict between two tribes, Michael discovers not only that he is suspected of being more than he says he is - more, indeed, than even he knows, but that things in this land are not quite what they seem.I won't lie to you - it took me a long time to get through this book. To call Michael's journey "epic" is an understatement, and we take every step of that journey with him. Unfortunately, when combined with the many instances of introspection, self-doubt and constant guilt, made the pace of the story very slow. I am happy to report, however, that the ending was very satisfying and entertaining, so I still give it my recommendation.

Especially for someone like myself who knows absolutely nothing about vehicles other than how to drive one, and even that is questionable. This book isn't very technical so someone with little to no knowledge of cars can read and understand it, which is cool...because otherwise I would have been totally uninterested. This book goes over famous cars from history, as well as possible cars of the future, including self-driving cars...which was the most interesting part of the book for me. This book also includes pretty cool illustrations, which helps with the visuals while reading about the history of cars.If you are interesting in history, or just interested in cars, I think this would be a great item for you to check out. I did receive this item complimentary in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. interesting By Topper23 I admit that I have always been pretty ignorant when it comes to cars. It baffles me how my boys can name just about any type of car that is on the road...especially sports cars...and be able to give me a lot of facts on each. This book was very informative and oddly enough, I found it interesting. It didn't really teach me about all of the models of cars but it did teach me a lot about the history of the automotive industry as well as hopes and plans for the future. Good read for anyone who is interested in automobiles and the business side of it. Physically, the book is very pleasing to the eyes. The printer did a great job and there are lots of colorful and interesting pictures also. Sample provided for review.

The writing is clear and concise and although I didn't think that the subject matter directly appealed to me, it did to my husband and son, and upon further inspection, it did to me also because it contained more info than just on motors and engines. This book looks at what happens to the auto industry during hard times and so much more. Such an interesting read. Although I really don't know how close we are to flying cars, or if I would even want one or to be in one, this is a fascinating read. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

It has been run through some kind of automatic word-scrambling anti-plagiarism software and dumped back out in a nearly incomprehensible form.A few of the phrases sounded familiar, however. So I did a google search for the phrase with better word choices. i.e. From the section on "cleaning", the supposed-author used the phrase "holy place stones and ecological mending stones", which sounded to me like a gibberish version of "altar stones and environmental healing stones". So I did a search for that, and voila!....found the site it came from. It's there, verbatim, along with most of that section, on the website crystal-cure(dot)com. Just click for the list of gemstone articles, then under the first section, "cleansing your gemstones". It's all there, from the lists to the conclusion. If it was possible to give this author zero stars (and a kick in the shins for being an unethical git), I would. "Books" like this one, blatantly stealing from other authors, make me want to give up on buying e-books, since clearly, the immoral and the lazy pepper the landscape with books like this "Allie". (I'm sure that's not "her" real name, and that she's some internet marketing freak that watched a video course on how to scrape content and make a million dollars with passive kindle income. They're all by some IM freak, it seems. Get off my Amazon, IMers!)

"Terrifyingly fun! Max Brallier's The Last Kids on Earth delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs."--Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy KidDiary of a Wimpy Kid meets The Walking Dead in this very funny post-apocalyptic graphic novel for middle-grade readers.  Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he's armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores. But Jack alone is no match for the hordes of Zombies and Winged Wretches and Vine Thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as Blarg. So Jack builds a team: his dorky best friend, Quint; the reformed middle school bully, Dirk; Jack's loyal pet monster, Rover; and Jack's crush, June. With their help, Jack is going to slay Blarg, achieve the ultimate Feat of Apocalyptic Success, and be average no longer! Can he do it?  Told in a mixture of text and black-and-white illustration, this is the perfect book for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in his or her own comic book or video game. And stay tuned for the sequel, The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade, coming in Fall 2016!

The Last Kids on Earth, by Max Brallier

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—An apocalyptic monster attack has destroyed the town of Wakefield, leaving gigantic, slime-filled creatures in its wake. It appears that the entire population has been turned into zombies, except for 13-year-old Jack Sullivan. Jack is an abandoned foster kid trying to survive the catastrophe while living in a tricked-out tree house. In his daily fight for survival, which includes hand-to-hand combat using makeshift weapons, he locates two of his fellow students. One's a science geek, and the other's an oversize school bully. They unite to form a small army and set off to rescue a classmate they believe is trapped in their decimated school. The chapter book/graphic novel hybrid is fast moving and action packed. Loaded with outrageous devices such as a rolling ball of zombies, a revenge-filled creature with bad eyesight called BLARGH, and a monster-dog name Rover, this book provides loads of laughs. The characters are fully developed and honest in their adolescent interactions. Yet what sets this story apart from the typical gross-out fare is how these modern-day action heroes work through their emotions, which include love, loss, and extreme fear. Dynamic pencil sketches add to the hilarity. For readers looking to make the transition from chapter books to graphic novels, this is a foolproof initiation. VERDICT A gross-out good time with surprisingly nuanced character development.—Sada Mozer, Los Angeles Public Library

Review "Terrifyingly fun! Max Brallier's The Last Kids on Earth delivers big thrills and even bigger laughs."--Jeff Kinney, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Diary of a Wimpy Kid* "Middle-grade readers, particularly boys, will find Jack’s pitch-perfect mix of humor, bravado, and self-professed geekiness impossible to resist. . . . The marriage of text and illustration serves as a perfect example of what an illustrated novel can and should be."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review* "Terrifically funny . . . Snarky end-of-the-world fun."--Publisher's Weekly, starred review* "This book provides loads of laughs. . . . A gross-out good time with surprisingly nuanced character development."--School Library Journal, starred review"The video-game-like plotting, gross-out humor, frequent pop-culture references, and quippy dialogue make this a great fit for reluctant readers. Recommend to Wimpy Kid fans looking for a horror-lite adventure."--Booklist"Young zombie fans will rejoice in this new series that has all the oozing (by the zombies) and heroism (by the kids) that they could hope for."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

By Hello Happy I’d actually love to see a movie version of The Last Kids on Earth, which tells a comic story about a team of friends facing off against zombies and monsters at the end(?) of the world. I enjoyed the first person narration as it describes the clever weapons and tactics they use to mostly avoid — and occasionally fend off — the monstrous people of this small town. The story moves along quickly, with lots of fun humor. My concerns that the book might turn grotesque or violent were unfounded, and I found that the characters, which include the hero/narrator, a strong female (who is definitely not in distress), a brainy friend, and a now-reformed bully, do a good job of showing how great teams can succeed together. I also really liked the illustrations that were part of the story, too. I really appreciated the fun and wholesome messages about friendship, teamwork, and trying to be happy and enjoy life — even during difficult circumstances.

By kailyn williams I want to thank Max Brallier, for writing this amazing book. I was having the hardest time getting my 11 year old son to read, he got this book 2 days ago and he was finish last night. He was so excited talking about this book, it filled my heart with so much joy because I never saw him excited about a book. He is so disappointed that he has to wait until August for the next installment. Again thank you Mr. Brallier

He loved it and is already asking for the sequel. He couldn't sit still while I read it, constantly up and down, wandering around me, looking at the pictures and absolutely entranced and excited by the story. After I finished he took the book from me and was looking through at all the pictures and the map in anticipation of where the next book would lead our heroes. I am sure he will re-read this himself many times. I hope Max Brallier puts out The Zombie Parade soon because my son has already declared this as the best book series there is.
